There are a lot crime in Brazil especially the favelas in Rocinha, the largest favela population in Rio de Janeiro. Portuguese is easier to communicate in Brazil. Be careful visiting the favelas in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo because the drug lords of violence and trafficking. There are good music cultures of the old school freestyle music back in the 1980’s of the favelas in Rocinha of most slums in Rio de Janeiro with the electro dance beats of Latin hip hop with using keyboards and the electronics. I loved to hear a lot of the freestyle music in the favelas in Rio de Janeiro and in São Paulo with the synthesized dance beats of the music cultures of the Brazilian slums or the shantytowns in the richest and the poorest areas in Brazil. I loved the old school freestyle music back in the 1980’s and a lot of the electronic dance music in most of Rio de Janeiro.🇧🇷💙💚💛💻🎹🎵

I have to say I am from Rio and I have lived here for about 23 years. I have never been robbed although I have been in places called dangerous. It is all about how you act. If you feel like taking your phone out so you can take a picture of these poor people in front of you of course you get a higher chance to be robbed but if you act like it is normal and just go your way passing them you probable gonna be alright. Thing is your tips are very helpful specially if you are on a crowd such as a big free show or the subway in rush hours. I also have my own tip over the money you carry on you: Always keep your money on divided between you pockets and even socks because if someone is going to rob you they just take some little money.

I'm Nigerian and wife is Brazilian; we met at Uni in England where we started dating. I visited Brazil first in 2017 and never imagined I'll ever live there based on the reports of crime and violence. We now live in Santo Andre, which is a part of Greater Sao Paulo, though we shuttle btw Abuja (Nigeria) where I still work and Santo Andre. Unlike Abuja or London where people walk around the streets a lot, I observed that folks don't freely walk about the streets of Sao Paulo and even Santo Andre except in crowded parts of the city centre. Few weeks ago my wife and I visited our pastor who lives on the streets parallel to us at night with our toddler son. We wanted to walk back home afterwards but he insisted on dropping us off at home; better to avoid being mugged than be sorry. My wife grew up in SP so whenever we're out at night, she's ever cautious while driving; she'd rather slow down a mile ahead of a red light than stop at a red light waiting to turn green at night. I miss riding bigger cars in Brazil; feels a bit claustrophobic transitioning from riding big cars in Nigeria or US and cramping inside those tiny cars most Brazilians drive

I would say that there are two Brazilian realities: the one before you are assaulted at gun or knife point; & the one after. These moto boys are not playing about; they have nothing to lose; and unlike in London; they will KILL YOU! Personally, I have been robbed twice in quick succession after happily living in ignorance. Ultimately if you are living an active life; i.e; You are getting about Brazilian cities or using public transport, it is only matter of time before the reality hits: the clock is ticking.

This is good advice to travel safely in any big city, really. I'd like to add that if you feel that you're walking/driving into a sketchy neighbourhood, it's probably a sketchy neighbourhood. Pay attention to that gut feeling and well, don't do that. It's specially true in Rio, where a single wrong turn gets you in a bad place (even locals have problems with that). Also, don't rummage through your purse/backpack/wallet while outside, in public. Slip into a shop, cafe, whatever.

I am an older world travelled Gringo and I have to say, after watching this excellent clip that it is just not worth the risk. I was in Russia a year ago and a border soldier tried to shake me down for cash. I lied and told him all I was carrying was credit cards. He backed down (I had 3kUS$ in my pocket). I would not stand up to a street robber in Brazil. He would get everything, including my phone and cash. Happy to oblige. I just think we have to weight the costs and benefits when picking which countries to visit. I would not sleep well if this were my daughter, living in Brazil, even though she is street smart.

I've been taking class in Philadelphia but I think I need an immersive experience. I don't have anyone here to help me practice and all my Brazilian friends are 2-3 hours ahead of my time zone. @vlevesque2000 If you have brazilian friends when you arrive here search for private teachers, mostly students from the university. Probably you're gonna learn faster, cheaper and in a more practical way. There's 2 types of language schools here: The expensive ones, i.e.: Cultura Inglesa; and those that won't teach you much unless you stay for years.

Would you recommend going to São Paulo or skipping it with the news at the moment? Can you take an iPhone there with you? Thank you, I really liked your videos :)
@BrazilianGringa
@BrazilianGringa 6 жыл бұрын
@Katharella As for yellow fever, the city is perfectly safe and the outbreak is totaly under control, you're only at risk in rural areas outside of the main city (parks etc are fine). I do live in a high risk area since I live on the edge of São Paulo's biggest nature reserve, however I haven't had the vaccine. I was considering getting it but the queues at the clinics to get the free vaccine were really crazy and I simply never had the time to go there and wait. Now, I'm no longer considering going to get it done. I think it has died down a lot and so many people have recieved the vaccine that it really seems to be under control now. I'm simply taking extra precautions such as putting on repelent every morning and every night after taking a shower, using plug-ins in my house and always keeping a can of bug killer handy. (But as I said there's nothing to worry about in the city, infact, as for the small number of cases that were found inside the city at the beginning of the outbreak, it was determined that the people who had contracted the virus had been bitten by a Y.F carrying mosquito while they were visiting areas outside of the city). Yes you can take an IPhone to São Paulo, I know many Brazilians here who own IPhones, just be smart about when and where you use it outside and make sure you don't keep it in your back pocket. Don't have fear of being robbed because it probably won't happen, just be cautious and pay attention to your environment ;)
