I was planning on staying in bed, depressed all day today, but this video has just made me get up and do things. I had a couple of the early tracks ('Circles' and 'Solitaire' iirc) on vinyl when I was DJing, and loved Republica, but didn't realise it was the same person until a few years later. In interviews she always seemed like a really likable, nice person. I'm so glad to see that wasn't just true, but also a massive understatement. What a thoroughly wonderful example 😊👍

Saff is amazing really! The band were never that massive, but played some fairly big shows and had a following of their own. Saw Republica a few years ago live at Calne Festival, when it was Saff's birthday and the event organizers gave her a cake on stage. Was a beautiful night and an awesome show! 😊

I never understood why Republica never picked up steam in the USA during that Ready To Go period. The band had a very cool sound and Saffron seemed like a hard working pro with no red flags. Neo/Cyberpunk Anime was picking up popularity in the US around that time thanks to the Sci-Fi Channel Anime marathons. The Playstation with Lora Craft as the mascot was red hot at that time. Pokemon, Drangon Ball, the Egg looking Mac computer, digital toys, everything around had that Clockwork Orange style infusion, all that was part of the pop culture of the time. Republica complimented what was pop culture at that time. The band only did just a few late night show performances and then was never ever seen or heard again in the USA. It's like we in the USA saw the band walk through a revolving door just once and POOF! Cool sound and Saffron's exaggerated posh singing style was neat. I'm thinking MAYBE Oasis' bratty attitude when doing American publicity work back then may have made American outlets to take a dump on all British acts at the time and Republica unfairly got caught in the smear at no fault of their own. I remember Oasis performing live on some American MTV show and the presenters of the show heckled Liam on live TV, like mocking his stage persona. I'm assuming Liam left his trademark impression on the presenters before the start of their live performance.

It could be they didn't put the work in. One thing all UK bands know, and need to know, is they have to work, work, work and work more to get noticed in the US because it's such a vast country. A lot of bands just don't or won't put the work in.

@@trebleking1641 No, not at all. All members of Republica were already 5 to 15 year veterans in the music scene. Saffron never had drug issues and was always working the stage like a pro.
