And now imagine how awful our lives would be without the influence of art. Imagine having no music. No books. No games. No TV. No films. No theatre. No musicals. No nice fashion. No dance. No paintings or art of any description. No photography. No magazines. No journalism. No nice architecture or anything that requires design skills. And who do you think helped invent everything we use today? Artists. Creative thinkers. Who reshaped our understanding of science? People who used their imagination. Artists. Who created our modern medicine? Artists, the first people to document and understand human anatomy. And how do doctors and the public learn about health? Through books. Through videos. Through writers. And who do you think created modern democracy and society? Philosophers. How did figures like Martin Luther King Jr. Shape society? A lot of it is through speeches. Through writing. Through a performance. Saying art isn't important is just plain stupid. If you won't listen to me, listen to Albert Einstein. "I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

@jaredthomas4663 Once again, another over-emoting performer proves my point. Performers are always trying to validate their hobby by co-opting the validity of other professions. No, it is performers who have no real and necessary value to a society. That is why I used the word "performer" -- you did read that, yes? You mention books. Well, unlike performers, writers can produce things of value. So writers get respect and are not the targets of my commentary. Every sufficiently complex society uses writing as a means of storing and transmitting information. Civilizations that existed thousands of years ago were viable in part because of writing. Even good fiction can transmit important ideas. Do I watch movies? You bet. But do I think that society needs movies to function? Well, considering that almost all of human history does not include movies, the answer is no. Performers are a luxury, and everyone can live perfectly happy and fulfilling lives without movies and tee-vee. In fact, there are quite a few writers who have expressed the opinion that movies and tee-vee are harmful to the individual creative process. Theater? Musicals? Fashion? None of those have any necessary value -- just fancy useless non-productive people who want to draw attention to themselves. Drawing and dance are interesting, because long ago, when they were the endeavors of free individuals, such activities had value. However, when such activities became corporatized and institutionalized, they lost their value. Many people who lived thousands of years ago danced or produced drawings, but they did not just do only those things. People hunted, gathered, farmed, built, AND then some of them also danced or produced drawings. Nobody would ever have tried to just dance or just draw for their living. Today's performers have to show up to do something, and they do draw paychecks. Good for them. But apparently it is not enough that you get paid for your hobby. You also want everybody to believe that performing is real and necessary work. Sorry, but no. Collect your money and move along. In closing, I leave you with the words of Mickey Spillane (a good writer): "An actor is somebody who hates himself so much, he has to be somebody else.".

Big problem is there is a massive worker shortage. There are thousands of jobs going unfilled. If I owned a company and couldn't fill several positions, and AI was the answer, I would move forward with it. Unfortunately in the workforce today there is too much "Quiet Quitting", everyone wants to work from home, and people need to feel appreciated. Guess what, people need to feel appreciated from within. The satisfaction of a paycheck is your appreciation. AI is the future. People need to get on board and adapt. Or else they're going to be left behind. But I'm sure once that happens they'll be blaming everyone else and complaining about that. Accountability is mostly a thing of the past.

People hate actors and artists, and it shows in the comments... believe it or not, the people who make your entertainment are employees too, and deserve to be paid. It's called an "industry" for a reason. Those complaining everything has gone "loony left"... the people who work on shows do not get to decide on the scripts and nature of the content.... it's the rich corporate execs (that you claim to hate so much, and who have zero creative skills) that decide what goes in and what doesn't.
@chrisddawson

You nailed it. The negative comments are a sad indicator of how mercenary and uncaring our society has become as the rich get richer and the poor go homeless. Everywhere. In everything. When it happens to those uncaring people, they will realize all their hard work, education and “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” efforts mostly go to the wealthy in control.

Look, there are real concerns about Hollywood making unfair deals about stealing their likeness but there are *millions* of public domain pictures and movies and cgi extras have already gone from back ground to mid ground. Here's a potential plot outline and cast list for a SAG-AFTRA strike film with a time travel to the golden age of cinema theme: Plot: - Jane Smith (Anne Hathaway), a young actress and SAG-AFTRA member, is frustrated with the lack of quality roles for women and the studios' unwillingness to meet the union's demands during contract negotiations. - When talks break down and a strike is called, Jane accidentally gets transported back in time to Hollywood's Golden Age of the 1930s-40s. - Jane meets classic actresses like Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, and Carole Lombard who educate her on their struggles. She learns about the hard-fought gains they made in wages, credits, and respect. - As Jane considers returning to her time, she realizes the strike is not just about the current demands, but continuing the fight started by those iconic actresses. Jane gains a new appreciation for the shoulders she stands on. - Empowered, Jane returns to present day just as the strike ends, with SAG-AFTRA achieving key victories like diversity standards, improved residuals, etc. Jane feels those classic leading ladies were somehow fighting alongside her and her fellow union members. Cast: - Anne Hathaway as Jane Smith - Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Dandridge - Viola Davis as Hattie McDaniel - Jane Fonda as Katharine Hepburn - Laura Dern as Bette Davis - Margot Robbie as Carole Lombard - Dev Patel as Cary Grant - Hugh Jackman as Clark Gable - Matthew McConaughey as Humphrey Bogart Let me know if you would like me to modify or expand on this plot and casting idea in any way!

Do you seriously not understand how a strike works? Why on Earth would they go on strike for other industries? They don't work in them! They are not part of the unions! Do you see any other workers striking for actors or writers? No! Because that would make zero sense and would have no legal standing. An actor/ writer can go on strike and also support other strikers through things like word of mouth without explicitly participating. They're not mutually exclusive. A lot of people (clearly not you) don't like workers being unfairly exploited, no matter the industry.

SAG and WGA turned their back on BTL crew and vendors that are the true engines for film and TV. Salaries changed because times changed. Lets have an honest discussion about ROI on these projects in comparison to when residual numbers were higher. Technology has affected every industry and will continue to do so. Other industries (music streaming, advertising, automotive, etc) are having to adapt while we decide to completely stop because these guys refuse to do so. To strike at a time when work in the states was scarce with no consideration for us (BTL) is just selfish. If this doesn't end many of us wont be able to return at all. If it were just about the dollar amount a deal would have been made already. The teamsters just locked a historic deal with UPS. The DGA locked a deal with the studios during the WGA strike. Be realistic, adjust and adapt.

The execs are the ones behind this problem. They burden force their writers to include political agendas into their stories. Also, They don't give them enough time to revise storylines or dialogue, and demand 14 pages every 2 days. And I mean, why else have seasons been getting shorter episode counts over the years. Reality Check..During the heyday of broadcast TV in 1960s one show filmed more hours each season than Streaming does in original programming in a year. Indeed the Emmy Awards hasn't gone to a series outside Cable-Streaming for some time and they employ fewer actors than anyone else and its getting worse. The brutal truth is the public is likely watching or following some fool on line more in one day than they might view in a month of scripted new entertainment. There is simply no jobs for many of the 150K+ members of SAG since they no longer exist and for everyone that might work a day as an extra when there is perhaps dozens or more don't or will..

So let me get this straight.... You want to get paid for something you did last year or 5 years ago? While the rest of us get up, go to work, and get paid for what we did in the last week or two and that's pretty much it. Additionally, no one is holding a gun to your head saying you have to be an actress and practice your "Craft" (a term that always cracked me up among actors). Here's a thought.... Go out and get a job. There's tons of jobs right now falling from the sky that are going unfilled in the non-acting world. Get a 9 to 5 Monday thru Friday job with a boss for about a year. Then get back to me.

Had to get a new line of work. If AI and streaming is a shift in the industry, actors and those who support it might have to find a new line of work. Cars replaced the buggy and buggy whip. Computers and internet replaced newspapers. If Streaming and AI replace the old payment model for actors and those who work in that industry, they will have to find a new line of work. Actually setting up a streaming platform and modern, related distribution is far easier than the methods of last century, where you had to have warehouses of film stored and VHS/DVDs. Simple truth of all this is forming a new production company with a good technical crew is the cheapest part of changing the business flow model. The large studios that don't understand this are the ones that will be left behind in the end. They may own all the old shows/movies but people like connecting with other people, and the art of storytelling, and want something modern that helps them cope with the present. Set up a new actor and writer friendly new streaming platform and also add things like Sports and Reality t.v., maybe some independent documentaries and you're in business.

Movies & TV Shows are deferred + there's too much offer. Strike numbers tell the Studios are making profits and reducing the bill. They are happy. This strike will need 9 to 12 months to be really effective. That will be the moment of strength, not now. This impulsive people only reveal actors are desperate, and that they can't wait that much. The studios can see this, and bet the strike can be counterproductive to actors. SAG-AFTRA must have cold and long term strategies if wants to be successful. Or ask people for money to eat, pay rent, etc... for at least 1 year of resistance. Studio numbers will be the reddest red at that time and will ensure some success. Right now SAG-AFTRA may be doing stupid, and as a result can disappear. If they want to play chess, they need to make it better.
