@@kgal1298 Yes, because then by that logic companies like netflix who has made it so much easier for everyone to view movies has to continuously keep paying every single actor and writer for the thousands of TV shows that they have. If they have to pay for the likeness, then actors have to reduce their paychecks upfront because we all know hollywood actors get paid way too much in general. Writers are fine because they are treated badly and paid less so they have to pay them but I have no sympathy for actors.

Can Doctors run multi million movie studios? You act like there is no skill to juggling different movie projects, sourcing funding, making marketing decisions, forecasting future trends because it takes years to make a movie so what might be popular in 2023 might not be in 2025, dealing with shareholders vs the creative types. And if you don't do your job properly and a studio goes under then thousands of people lose job opportunities including alot of working class positions such as carpenters, artists, caterers, electricians, stuntman etc etc etc. What job opportunities do Doctors create? Maybe a small practice with a few nurses, a physio, etc. Doctors have a valuable place in society but they are also like mechanics. You get good ones who actually care and then you get meh ones who just want to maximize number of appointments to maximize income. But I also feel like actors are contract jobs anyway. Why should they be paid forever and ever for content done 20-30 years ago. The average person doesn’t get that chance. Once we get a job, we do our job, and get paid nothing later in life. Sounds like they just need to save their money after jobs. But I understand musicians get paid forever. It’s just a negotiation at the end of the day.
@993sps
@993sps Жыл бұрын
The difference between an actor’s work that continues to be used to generate profits for the production/streaming company and other types of contract work is that the actor’s unique likeness and performance is a primary factor determining the value being generated by the product, even decades down the line. It’s hard to prove the same thing with other contributions made by contract workers to a project, like a computer program, data/file organization, skillful management of employees, accounting or business analysis done, a design or innovation, etc. While one could argue that all work done by contract workers or employees adds considerably to the value generated by a company years into the future, it is much harder to directly prove it if that worker’s name, face, and identifiable creative work are not the primary selling points for the product. But yes, it is about negotiation at the end of the day. It’s easier for actors to negotiate around these points because their literal faces and names are used to generate immense profits, whereas other workers appear more indistinguishable and replaceable in their contributions, even if in reality they are not. Despite the superficial appearance of glamorous lifestyles for its stars, Hollywood has always been hyper-exploitative, even to its most popular/adored celebs. It’s certainly not a career I would choose, but it makes sense that those who are in it would try to use all the leverage they can to get their fair share of the wealth generated by entertainment.
@HailSocialite
@HailSocialite Жыл бұрын
1) Actors should get paid forever because that’s how their contracts work. Residuals are part of the contract. Their contracts are not one-off jobs. The residuals help them have income between jobs and help them maintain their health insurance. The more a show got played in syndication, the more money they could make. As is pointed out in the video, the cast of FRIENDS has made millions in residuals from syndication. With streaming, I’ve heard that actors just get paid a flat rate and they don’t make more, even if their show is popular on streaming platforms. Ronald Reagan negotiated back in the 1960s for TV residuals for actors. 2) “we get paid nothing later in life” - unfortunately, many industries used to have robust pension programs that have been gutted in the last 30-40 years. People were paid after they retired. Some jobs still have pensions (military, police, and teachers I think?) instead of or in addition to retirement savings options.

@@suga2200 A better analogy would be royalties, patents, and licensing. Someone creates something/gets a patent, and if other companies want to use it, they have to license it from the creator and pay an amount every time it’s used or sold (a royalty). Their contracts do not treat them as freelancers or give them a lump sum for work completed with no further pay.

This argument is why I find it hard to sympathize with Hollywood strikers. Most jobs don't keep paying AFTER someone does a job, so why are they so special. Now, I get that a TV show or movie keeps making once it's out which is unique, but they chose to work in this industry. If someone cannot make a living as an actor, then maybe do something else. Exactly. That is what Reese Witherspoon, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain etc. many A listers start doing a decade ago, starting their own production companies. They can set up and finance the production and put it out for sale of distribution. They control the salaries and what is fair to the actors/crew. Because their neck is on the line, there is probably slightly less fat and waste on their productions because it is their money/their risk. The cost of any production has gotten so out of hand, there needs to be an evaluation of how it can be more economical to make quality productions.......

But then distribution ends up being tied to these other bigger corporations. If the talent can own every facet of the creation process, then they have something. @@nealaborgman2055 That won't solve the problem. First off, if you start your own company, you still have to compete with these multinational studios who have massive IP properties and their own streaming services to reach audiences, etc. Secondly, the issue isn't that actors or any workers don't need the people at the top. CEO's are important. But so are workers. If you start your own business, you are the CEO, and that solves your problem, but you still need to hire workers and they deserve a fair share of the profits.

@@nealaborgman2055 But the "hard part" is shopping the content around. Netflix is still the 800 pound gorilla in the room, who is willing to spend on content and won't really get in the way or ask too much of the production company. The main thing Netflix wants is that if they bank roll the production, they need to own it. Which makes sense of you think about it. They still have issues with content disappearing from the platform and they don't want to have to negotiate every time with the production company just to keep the content on the platform (they lost all the Marvel shows they once had on the platform). It doesn't matter what the production companies do, it matters where users can get to the content and they still need to deal with the studio system, the streaming giants, and networks. Brad Pitt, Tyler Perry whatever don't have the expertise or capital to put together a streaming network and still be solvent at the end of it. You're tone-deaf if you don't even listen to the thousands of "smaller guys" in Hollywood who are thankful for these actors lending their support to this issue. People let "Hollywood actor" paint their perception of Hollywood--most actors and behind-the-scenes production people (thousands upon thousands) aren't as rich or famous as a Tom Cruise or somebody. There are far more people making a far more modest living than you realize. The majority of the industry makes well under $100K a year. Besides, there are plenty of examples of even famous actors who came from working-class families. If I were someone with a relative who's in the industry (and I personally am), then I would _hope_ that one of us finds greater success in Hollywood. I'm not mad at high-profile actors here--those like Gunn are lending their support and doing what anyone would to help protect their livelihood. Ok let me try and understand this. When an actor does a movie he or she gets money for their acting and most often ask for a percentage of the box office proceeds. Netflix purchases the rights to show the movie but isn't technically a theater so all the cash goes to the production company with nothing going to the actors. Mmmm well contractual agreements with the Production company have to change I would imagine so the actors get a percentage of the sale to Netflix or any media identified as a streaming service theater, social platform or internet based entertainment service or television Network In the long run it would depend on who OWNS the rights to the movie wouldn't it as to the entity who controls money paid for the purpose of ownership. On the AI question actors have to include clauses prohibiting reproduction of their image, their voice, reproduction of their characters image or voice for the movie and that movie being shown on any streaming service, theater or Network etc. The new agreement has to include that and I would imagine much more.

If I buy Lord of the Rings, i can watch it everyday for the rest of my life. Frodo, (Elijah Wood) doesn't get a little money every time I watch it. Why should Netflix keep paying forever, after they bought the film?
@freeloadingmf
@freeloadingmf Жыл бұрын
Because their customers pay every month to stream it. The customers don't 'buy' a netflix subscription one time and never pay again. So why should actors and writers only get paid once, while executies get paid huge bonuses... When networks bought shows, creatives got paid every time it aired. Netflix should pay based on monthly streams or something.

@@freeloadingmf For the same reason you only get paid once if you're an electrician and you fix someone's doorbell. Should the customer keep paying you every time someone rings it? It's ridiculous You do a job and you get paid for it on a contract YOU signed. You can either decline the job or not.

@@freeloadingmf It wasn't built like that from the start at all. Some actors (based on how well known and succesful they are) have the choice between getting a one time BIG salary OR a smaller salary, but with residuals... If you're a lesser known actor then you're not gonna paid as much as a big time actor for a single job. That's life. Making it as an actor is extremely hard (as every succesful actor will tell you) so if you take the risk to pursue that career based on the very small chance that you'll be the next Deniro or Cruise then that's on you im afraid. What are these actors actually making on projects? It's funny they say that Netflix refuses to tell how much money they actually make, yet these actors on strike aren't sharing that info neither. A bit hypocritical ain't it?

That actor dude mispoke. Netflix does release their earnings. What they don't release is the total number of views that each show gets. They don't need to release that info because they aren't paid per view.

Don’t get mad at Netflix for a deal the studios made with them. Netflix pays upfront. That’s their model. They get money off subscriptions not views. If you want to be paid per view on Netflix then Netflix will have to move towards an Ad model. This is something no one is talking about. Do you want an Ad or two before each episode of The Office? Streaming and the studio model are not the same. If you want to keep the ad free model then residuals will go the way of the dinosaurs, VHS tapes and DVDs. Pay talent more yes but in the current model, residuals is unfeasible unfortunately. Don’t shoot the messenger. I would much rather have the old model with better products. Bring back the 80s/90s 😢

The studios don't want to release streaming numbers. Actors want to use 3rd party sites for streaming numbers to calculate residuals. 3rd party sites tend to skew high and would result in absurdly high residuals. If the studios released the numbers they would be much lower than they've led shareholders to believe. Investors will jump ship, the streaming services will have to cut back on projects, and the actors will lose work. Unless one actually believes streaming services are the one portion of the entertainment industry not facing a decline even though they're consistently raising prices.

This whole strike has really shown us who among the A-list actors/movie stars are the real “friends” of their colleagues, the working actors. It’s been disappointing to see some of my favorite actors, people whose work I respect, still promoting their movies (despite SAG-AFTRA’s explicit instructions not to do so once the union went on strike. I’m looking at you, RDJ) rather than using their celebrity to put pressure on the studio bosses to do the right thing and renegotiate a better deal so they and everyone else can get back to work. Netflix does list their earnings, as it is a publicly traded company. So we know that had a net income of $1.4 Billion for Q1. It is unclear how that money is made. What shows in particular are earning that money. Why can’t the actors/writers get a piece of that profit? Sean’s point is valid. Let them share in the success and failure.

If only I could of seen my bigotry and narrow world view sooner lives could be saved. These people are literally starving to death and dying in the streets and here I am showing up for work everyday working for this dangerous capitalist society. The only move forward is to donate 40% of my earnings and have my children eat top ramen to pay for my transgressions. Imagine a world where people have to use skill and change to the current times without lecturing their audience about how terrible people they are , quite frankly thats a terrifying world I know anyone with access to 1000 other forms of entertainment do not want to live in. Namaste and bless all these brave and courageous souls for having the virtue, love and intelligence of quitting their jobs while us regular folks are forever in debt to this magnificent beautiful ritual against evil innovation and hard work. I speak for the average man woman and non binary ally everywhere who cant imagine losing the opportunity of great hits such as she hulk, rings of power, cuties, strange world, the disney live action movies and all the other great box office hits the past decade. Imagin3 a world where children cannot be with minor attracted adults and grooming was considered gross. Thank you all for shedding light on all the VALUE you offer and that we will only be left with 1000 other things to do with our lives. I pity anyone who doesn't care for this cause. It’s actually not that hard. For example, if 1,000 accounts watch “You” more than 50% of the time that they’re logged into Netflix, the talent involved on the show should get a cut of the subscription fees from those 1,000 accounts. That’s one way of being fair to your writers and actors. (That’s actually how TV actors keep getting paid during reruns, based on the number of viewers - which is a number that influences fees for commercials that play during each episode.)
