I learned something after moving to a rural town here in Wisconsin: I had thought that, unless 'no trespassing' signs were posted, you were allowed to walk on the land. So I would take my young (three to five-year-old) son on what we called 'jaunts', exploring the back roads and trails in our beautiful bluff-filled, forested region. We found nature, and history, including secluded ponds and old, abandoned buildings, on old, no-longer maintained and overgrown roads that had been cut through the forests when this land was cleared of timber a hundred years ago. The forests, especially on the steep hills, have grown back, but these roads, though now hard to see unless you look for them, are great for walking on. Then, when I was telling a local person about our jaunts, she got an almost horrified look on her face and said, 'Oh, no, you can't do that!' It turns out that the default is that you cannot enter any land anywhere without the permission of the landowner. And how can you even find out who that would be, since most of these places are far from any houses, and no boundary lines are clearly marked? It made me sad, but that's when our jaunts ended. The thing is, from what I've seen, pretty much anyone who lives here and owns land out in the back country, would say, 'Oh, sure; go ahead and jaunt!' Unfortunately, the problem is the one in a hundred who would NOT say that, and who could conceivably greet us with a gun in hand; and quite within their 'rights', scare the life out of me and my little boy. In some states, they'd be within their rights to shoot us dead, just for being there. I don't think that's true in Wisconsin, but one of those one in a hundred might. Sorry for the long rant, but I so agree with many of the points you bring up here. I cannot say I 'miss' the things that Sweden offers, since I've never been there. But I would love to have some of the freedoms you can take as given, that we here in 'the land of the free' don't even see as options. Those folks who would say go ahead and jaunt would also probably defend the idea that, of course, folks who own land that they may not have ever walked on themselves have the god-given right to control access to it, because they 'own' it. As always, regardless of how I might sound here, your video made me feel good about humanity. Your gentle passion for what's important is always an uplifting thing for me to have in my day.

So interesting to hear and such a shame! Nature should be for everyone to enjoy, esxpecially children - how else will they care for it in the future? I think USA is the extreme example, similar to NZ and AUS, where land was divided and individuals got lands far to big to manage! 💖 Thank you so much 💖💖💖

@@SagaJohanna Yes, I see my own country as an 'extreme example' in so many ways that I often wish I could live in a different one. We do have huge areas of 'public land', primarily in the western states, but so much of it is managed for extraction industries -- mining, logging -- and almost all of it is open to grazing by cattle; overgrazing in too many places, by ranchers who treat the land as their own, to treat as they want. And too many of these people have taken to protecting 'their' land from the government, even though it's that government that builds the dams that provide water, and puts out fires that might burn the locals' property. Still, it's not all bad news. We do have wonderful places to roam, and we have dedicated, hard-working people caring for them. With climate change, that care is getting ever harder, but even folks who I would have thought would never see the threats are no longer able to deny them, and many are starting to take a closer look at land use. I'm 63, and could be justifiably pessimistic about where things are going, but I do see things getting better, if only after they get worse for the next several decades. My son is in his early 20s, and I worry about the world he'll spend his life in. But he, and you, and others who care, are aware of what can be done to make things better for everyone. That gives me hope, and even joy, when I think on it. Thanks again, for sharing your gentle, thoughtful, goodness. And happy Valentine's Day to you and your husband! I've been fortunate to travel to Sweden once from Australia and loved it. It's like a fairytale land. So interesting about the free education. The Scandinavian countries seem so advanced in so many ways. One of the great gifts of travel is that it makes you appreciate home even more. Thank you for such an interesting video.

Hello, Saga - I adored my holidays in Sweden. There’s so much that resonated in this video, but to pick a few of those points: What you said about less visually unattractive advertising. Most importantly, European values. As I’m from the UK, but have lived in other EU countries in the past, it saddens me that UK has always been semi-detached from Continental values (poisoned as it is by the hard right press). I sometimes feel like a stranger in my own country now. As you can guess I was appalled by ‘Brexit’. Mayor Michael Bloomberg summed it up for me: “I did say that I thought it was the single stupidest thing any country has ever done but then we Trumped it.”. On a personal level, for me the most important is silence as well. I find Sweden a quieter and more respectful place. Much of UK culture is quiet brash and loud. We really are half-way between Continental Europe and the USA. A few further points occurred to me: Less obesity. We have horrendous obesity levels. I noted how much healthier people seem to be in Sweden (picking up your point about less fast food), Children. How much better behaved but welcomed children seem to be. The cultural value of not being boastful or flashy. Does that survive in your view - and have you noticed a difference between when you first eft for France and now?

Thank you for this lovely video. I live in Germany and a lot of things you said apply for Germany as well. But unfortunately peoole here still somehow think everything American is THE best and therefore things like music in all the stores and advertising etc. creep more and more into our lives. But I am still so grateful, especially about the free education (even though it sometimes has its flaws). But to have silence....what a treat!

Our extrinsic values are ruining our society and we are no longer emphasizing community (it's been a long, slow process to get here, but we're here.). We need more intrinsic values in the US! Keep in mind this was made in 1965, so the kids can be mean. The theme is to avoid commercialism, and the kids are nice in the end. The music is AMAZING. 🧡

Although I'm a German resident, I always preferred to have my curtains opened during the daytime, which is not the norm over here. I will usually leave them open anyway, except for the bedroom, which is also my living room where I spend most of my time. The reason I had to compromise on this is that I live on the ground floor, and leaving your curtains open is so unusual that people will actually stop and look into your living space as if you were a zoo animal, which I find highly disturbing.

I’m from the United States of America, and I consider finding the love of my life either from Finland or Sweden because the Finns, and Swedes have beautiful blonde hair, beautiful blue eyes, and they speak English as a second language. When I get my love, I would love to travel around the European continent with her because it is so full with beautiful gems! I am 18 years young, I am a September 1 Virgo. If I could raise a family with the beautiful love of my life, i would like to wait until I am in my mid thirties because so I can save up money, and get prepared for parenthood. I would have two healthy cute adorable beautiful boys, and their names would be Jordyn Joy, and Adrien Blue.

Hi hi Saga, and thank you for this great little video sharing your happiness at being home sweet home in Sweden! I loved seeing the delicious pastries; I worked at a front desk at a lodge in Northern Wisconsin USA this past summer, and we had some delightful sweets made in the Swedish bakery there. One of my favorites was called a Danish Puff, and I wondered why it had a Danish name, but maybe it was originally made in Denmark? Also, one day somebody told me that I had "Danish red hair" which I really didn't get, as I am part Swedish. But I looked it up, and I guess lots of the Danish Vikings had red hair, maybe like mine, which is a red/blonde color. I know there are a few Swedes with this color of hair too, but is it pretty uncommon? Maybe lots of reddish beards on blonde men I imagine. My son is a dark blonde, and his beard has red in it. Also, I really like the concept of no trespassing when we think about how truly we cannot own the land, not really anyway, and as long as nobody is knocking on our windows or something, it should be okay I guess. So yeah, as always, such fun, inspiration, and so often wisdom as well, comes from your chats with us all~Thank you sweet Saga!!💝🙌💖

@@SagaJohanna 💖I have lived in 5 different Countries in southern Europe and the UK in the end is the best for me! I have 2 dogs which to me, they are like human children and the UK offers them the best possible life, vast green spaces to run free with less dangers compares to other countries in Europe. A part from the education system and the horrible weather UK is the best country to live for security and services offered by the Government. Actually Switzerland is the best place to live above all Countries, but it is too expensive for me at the moment. Uk is second to Switzerland. Then I would choose France, everything is good in France, but criminality is way too high, robbery and burglaries are certainly much higher than in the UK. Also there is no equality between men and women, at all !!! Not even in the UK, but at least the disparity here in the UK is not so obvious and well concealed. Switzerland is much better for gender equality. Italy is worse than France , probably same as Spain. Northern European country are much better for gender equality and there is less criminality. You have to live in a country to appreciate the reality of the situation and realise what you can cope with and what is a deal breaker for you ! As you have experienced in New Zealand. Equally the south of Italy, like the south of Spain are very beautiful places, definitely to see at least once in your life, people there are the kindest people ever , you will experience real generosity and they make you feel like part of the family , but every positive side can have a negative aspect to it. And anyway criminality once again in the South of Europe is way to high for my liking. It all depends what your priority are and what characteristics you look for in a place to live 💖 I hope this help . Love from me and 🐼🐻 the girls Xxx

Regarding private properties and no trespassing, we should also say it used to be good, but now it is no more. That is why, at least in Stockholm, they started a few years ago building fences almost everywhere. Not just villas but also around buildings, mine included. And, again in Stockholm, many people keep the curtains closed because some just stay there staring at your house and its creepy, really. That is also why 1st floors are cheaper:).

p.s. I agree with all the other points. I am currently forced abroad and I am terribly stressed. Noise, mess, no respect for personal space, clutter, litter everywhere, crazy advertising, people screaming instead of talking, catcalling. I am really exhausted!

This is such a nice video! One thing that has been driving me crazy here in the United States is people walking around talking on speaker phone. There used to be a politemess in public we observed when I was young that has now seemed to be over run with bad manners which in my opinion are not the behavior we should display in civilized society. There are many more bad behaviors than what I have mentioned but it would be quite a lengthy to list.

In the UK it would be difficult because the population density is so high (in England at least) and because of a high level of anti-social behaviour (even stopping short of technical crime). There is a qualified right to walk in certain places that are privately owned, such as heaths and moorland. But it is very strictly caveated - you can’t walk through someone’s garden for example. We do have a long history of public footpaths over private land including agricultural land but only on the path root, that many farmers hate …

Nothing like the levels of immigration paranoia & criminal activity enjoyed by the US, UK, or many others... The notable thing about the situation in Sweden is that there's incipient issues that could become full blown like elsewhere if not adequately addressed now.

It's very safe, media blows it up and makes things worse then it is. I worked in Malmo and the worse thing i saw was a couple who i assume were not native Swedish having a very loud argument that a shop keep came out to see what was up, and that was that. Bad areas like Rosengard that even the swedes say you shouldn't go to was very safe in my eyes. I even talked to African and Arabic immigrants and they too were lovely and friendly. You will find trouble if you look for trouble.

No, I've been to Malmo every week :) Didn't see any crime, walked by myself or with my friend and her young baby. Was there late at night and walked in the dark, not a single criminal :) 💖 It's some crazy propaganda, although there are issues with crime, it's still super safe!

There are natural remedies to make hair dye. My mom uses it sometimes to make dark brown streaks on her black hairs. No harmful chemicals damaging the hair

Thank you so much! I stopped dying my hair when I decided to be more eco friendly! The only eco friendly option is henna, but even then, there can be issues with heavy metals - plus you can only go dark if you're blonde :)

Yeah in the us we find it very very off putting if your curtains aren't closed at night like only crazy people don't want privacy and curtains are for opening and closing and we put a high value on privacy just based on principle alone. We close our curtains at nights and I think most of people in Sweden do. In the summer it so bright outside so you can´t sleep without curtains or blinds. During the day we don´t have closed curtains or blinds down, only when it´s hot in the summer. Who want anyone look through your windows while you are sleeping or into to your home when it´s dark and people can watch you from the outside, scary!

A Wonderful insightful video Saga Johanna 😇 By the way , I believe that your wish to have a bad prime minister leave , actually came True?!!! Today , in Ireland , a real office blocker resigned from office! Thank you Saga Johanna. It has been six years of useless policy and useless government. His replacement , is just another office holder , but we will give him the chance to redeem himself after six years he was part of the last government. We may need Saga Johanna again. As you obviously are aware , much of new law within European Nation’s is European Union Law . Environmental Law + Water Quality, etc. But Sweden has always had a reputation as Environmentally aware. In some countries down under , they actually RECYCLE waste pipe “water” from the sewer pipes, and recycle it to house tap water , which is both unhealthy and or can result in avoidable Deadly Dangerous illnesses, especially as that water may have been in a neighbour just the day before ?! But, they the locals do not tell Foreigner’s, either because they do not fully know the Dangers , or , they do not like Foreigner’s , who they can wrongly see in a false light of former Colony. Straight talk goes out the window, and, People get sick or die, not aware of cause and or effect . Yes , it is Impossible to speak Freely as We are Fortunate to Do in EU. As I watched your Video , it was Evident that you have a Great Weight off your shoulder’s , since I watched your previous Video . But, I have only seen two or three of your Video’s, so I am not making decisions, just acknowledging a difference That you appear Happier! Good! You made some interesting point’s . Indeed, the European Election’s are in a Few Weeks , Perhaps you should Run for The European Parliament , because that is Where + Why European Countries are Building on Good Principles , to Individual European Nations Goodness . But , The European Parliament is also responsible for some mistakes! Besides, it would not be Quiet! 😇 Here in Ireland , usually Farmer’s and Large land owner’s are ok , with People walking in The Countryside , but it is necessary to be careful to ensure you close gates to prevent animals straying into crops or onto public roads. It is always wise to ask farmers or landowners permission to walk on their land. While driving in Sweden , the Stockholm rental car I was driving relatively slowly in Uppsala slid down a hill, and became trapped. After, I walked back to the Swedish Hotel, where I was the only Winter Guest, thawed out, took a mid night Sanua + Roll in the Snow, and woke up in the morning, the local people rescued my rental car , which suffered no damage, the vehicle was a city rental not suited to countryside Winter driving! But, I found all the Swedish Local People whom I met at that Hotel in Uppsala so Genuinely Good+Kind. Generally speaking. There were some National Service Recruits whom I met, who invited me back to their place. Who had wrong ideas on Ireland. However, I was horrified when they started talking about items they had taken from their military service unit. As I Believe in Law + Order , And , I subsequently Studied Law, I felt it necessary to leave in a hurry when they offered to show me weapons from their military unit! They were nice people, who had consumed a lot of Alcohol and possibly meant well, but they did not understand That I wanted Peace in Ireland. By Peaceful Way’s + Democratic Mean’s. They mentioned items I cannot write. However, weapons in the hands of people drinking heavily strong spirits are never a Safe place, So I Left immediately, and, never returned. Subsequently, Using entirely Peaceful Way’s + Peaceful Mean’s , I became A Catalyst for The Peace Brokered Peace in Ireland , using Democracy + Law . However, enough of that… I was replying to your insightful video. With your Experience on your World Travel , you have insights now which may Help Sweden . There have been some very intelligent Female Politicians in Scandinavia . So if you are Quick as well, there is no reason why you would not be a useful Politician with Experience of The World , in Sweden +Or in The European Union ! God knows , there are a lot of seat sitters in the European Union Parliament who are less than useful , and , should be replaced! I really liked the clip, but Sweden is no longer what it used to be, it cannot be ignored that waves of Muslim immigration caused a change in the same values ​​that you talked about in the film. Of course I live in the country. yes, it is nicer in the country. I agree with you about the billboards, I hate them and are an eyesore. I usually try to be country specific" when I talk about Europe. But, I guess I will never get to see any of it. The US use to have those freedoms... Have a great week!

@@SagaJohanna Definitely more than many countries. But in terms of laws less so than the US for example. Which, to be fair, I think is a good thing, being allowed to stand around screaming abuse outside places of business or medical establishments etc. doesn't seem particularly pleasant to me. And also YES on the houses btw. I didn't appreciate Swedish build quality until I'd lived elsewhere haha.

I thought you were so happy living in New Zealand and that you didn't miss Sweden. I'm so confused. Also how is it anybody's business whether someone has their curtains closed or open? What if someone likes walking around their house new? If it's night time people will be able to see right in and then they offended by the new debate! People that spend too much time on stupid things like weather not people open close their curtains Lose my interest because they come up as not being Legitimate

In Northern Europe (Scandinavia) and even Holland it is wonderful to walk around and not see everybody hiding behind curtains and shutters. Makes for a much friendlier, open, less suspicious society. At night of course it makes sense to close the curtains. In Southern Europe people hide behind shutters and curtains day and night. Makes for a very insular, suspicious, close minded mentality. Plus, having the curtains drawn all of the time usually indicates that a person is depressed :)
