I enjoy your comparison's. No gimmicks, no "science" just a bloke testing stuff like we would at home. Most people are brand loyal and/or hoodwinked by the packaging. The cheaper own brand items usually contain less sugar which helps us diabetics. We've switched quite a few things to Aldi/Lidl own brands due to the reduced amounts of sugar and there's barely any taste difference. Stuffing always needs tons of butter whether homemade or packet. Then more butter !

Make your own, breadcrumbs, diced onion, sage, salt, pepper, a little sugar and beef suet if you have it.. Takes just 5 mins to rustle up, if you have no dried bread crumbs, just lightly toast some sliced bread and blitz it.. You can adjust the taste as you like and costs pennies.. I prefer more sage with mine..

We buy the cheapie Asda one, but we chop and cook an onion 🧅 and a knob of butter 🧈, and it’s fine. You can do a cheap Chicken Christmas dinner with it . Last week we paid £2:29 for a fresh chicken from Aldi . So you could do a family Christmas dinner for a fiver , just buy the cheap Yorkshire’s , and do your own veg and pigs in blankets. At Farm Foods you get a bag of Richmond sausage patties , and the little sausages for = £4 for the two. Aldi streaky bacon is the best to wrap around the little sausages. It’s how you cook the food that counts we put a bit of extra dried sage etc in too. It’s important to just add the little jeune se qua , to make food taste nice.

Recently I've been using Aldi own brand, I think it's 69p for a similar size. Indistinguishable from Paxo. One thing I learned from watching my Gran and my Mum, is to finely chop an Onion, saute it in a drop of olive oil and mix it into the dry mix. Also not using a buttered dish is a no-no. Always use a deeper dish than those, cover it with tinfoil to keep the moisture in, and just let it slowly bake but, don't skimp on the butter. It will turn out beautifully moist and far tastier. The dried up crust you get from using very shallow dishes just gives you a dry unpalletable tasteless lump of biscuit. And my favourite way to eat stuffing is... just out of the oven, lovely and moist, and spread it on a slice of bread and butter. Absolutely flippin' gorgeous😋.

I use packet stuffing but make it like my mum always did. I mix it with cold water and an egg, mix it and leave it to soak. Then add more water until it’s a loose mix and put it in an oiled dish and butter on top then bake it. It makes a lovely rich and moist stuffing. 👍🙂

If you can't be troubled to make your own from scratch, Aldi do a good packet one as a starting point. I almost always add extra onion(diced and parboiled - use the water in the stuffing). Add sausage meat and an egg to the mix, maybe a bit of white pepper, extra sage if preferred, and a sprinkle of salt. Also add juices from the meat during cooking.

I always have a pack of 'suitable for vegetarians' stuffing in the cupboard. It's really handy for unexpected vegetarian guests. It's a great base for veggie burgers even by added rinsed baked beans and frozen mixed veg or you can 'pimp my stuffing' by adding grated carrot, nuts etc or use it for a veggie crumble. I usually jazz up stuffing anyway by sprinkling sesame seeds on top with a bit of butter or oil on the top for extra crunch. I have also used it as emergency topping for a cottage pie when there aren't enough spuds.

The cheap stuffing tends to have a lot of crumb compared to other ingredients. However, that makes it useful as a seasoned thickener instead of bothering to make breadcrumbs. Sometimes I like making Sweet & Sour Chicken, but instead of rice and/or chips, I have it with roasted spuds and Broccoli - like a Sunday dinner! To add to that I make up some stuffing, but in a slightly different way! After adding the boiling water, I add a shot of stir-fry oil (instead of a knob of butter), a shot of soy sauce, and finish it off with a generous shot of sweet chili sauce! Mix it all together and bake as per instructions. It may sound weird to you, but it perfectly compliments the meal! 😋

I like to use the regular asda stuffing as a base, adding more dried sage, kibbled onion, fresh fried onions, and sausage meat. This year we have chosen to get ASDA Succulent Chicken Leg Quarters 1.1kg rather than the whole turkey bit, yes price comes into it at £2.30 a pack it is excellent value price wise and take 45 minutes in the oven gas mark 6, compared to hours for a turkey with the annual dodgy gas pressure issues. Not to mention the price of gas. The sausage meat is where you can stamp your stffing as your own i believe, whether you use just basic sausage meat with your own blend of herbs and spices or get highly spiced and flavoured premade sausage of your choice, or just smokey bacon. In the lead up to this christmas my family is suffering my annual stuffing experiments sofar the 2 favorites are the basic sausage meat on it's own and the blend of spanish chorizo and regular sausage meat. For stuffing "balls" i use a heavly flavoured buttered 24 Cup Mini Muffin Fairy Cake Pan i got off ebay. For gravy i like the Winiary Dehydrated Light Gravy Mix from asda as my base and again tinkered with to what the family likes. Take care and good luck with your christmas meal plans, thanks you for this video it provides good information to make an informed choices, God bless one and all.

I find the expensive stuff isnt as good as paxo with sage&onion stuffing. As for christmas stuffing, nothing compares to what my family make from scratch, its a polish recipe made with belly pork, and liver minced up, then breadcrumbs added, with some dried mushrooms and spices added. It then had whole dried fruits added, which absorb the excess fats and swell up like balloons. It turns out like a course pork/liver patè, and the turkey gets stuffed with it all, the belly pork skin is then used to cover the turkey along with bacon to protect it and stop the turkey meat drying out. Its quite a big job to make, and isnt cheap, so its a once a year xmas special. And its tastes even better on day 2 after its cooled, the stuffing taste better than the turkey in fact. And it also works to make a turine with bacon used as a cover to surround the stuffing when it doesnt all fit in the turkey.

Hey BFG, Just watched your sausage roll vid, reminded me that I hadn’t finished watching this one. Reason, is because, especially at this time of year, I mix sausage meat & stuffing together to make my own Xmas stuffing, so, its stuffing mix, wet down with a bit of water, add to that, some cranberry sauce, orange zest & juice of 1 orange, perhaps a chicken stock cube & plenty of pepper. Then i add about 1lb of sausage meat and mix together. (If I fancy it a bit more spicy I may also add a small sized black pudding as well). Place in something like a small bread tin and then bake. I do reckon that a homemade BREAD SAUCE, which is totally underrated is also a good addition for a Xmas lunch, (I make sure that there are some diced onions in the sauce, becomes much more tasty) and It is soo easy to make.

we have the asda one but you cook it different to us mate-we mix it up with a bit of cold water and a raw egg, then shove in the oven and it comes out fine.for 25p its got to be worth a try and dont forget your eating it out of context, you would normally have salt/pepper/mint sauce and gravy over it.that will totally change how it tastes.i get what your saying tho.

Thank-you for this thorough comparison, I have been curious about the look of the innards or the packet inside the box of paxo, and now I've gotten to see them. I think i might try making the commenters suggested homemade stuffing. Must get some sage then! Very helpful all the way round!

i buy the cheap and add bread crumb myself to it, the crusts are best put em in a processor and chop em up into crumb then mix with the packet stuffing... add extra herbs and onion if needed.

I quite like the idea of serving the stuffing separately. Mum always put the stuffing inside the chicken and it was stodgy, didn't like it. Hardly anyone I knew in the 1950s had turkey. Even chicken was a luxury for a lot of people. But we had a small chicken farm, so Christmas dinner was free. (All the vegetables came from dad's garden.)

I can only buy paxo where I live so can't compare, but I add chopped boiled onion and use the water to make it up...then add a bit of olive oil to stop it from sticking plus gives it a nice taste 👌👌

Spotted your kenco coffee comparison vid, came to look for a Nescafé coffee comparison so just a suggestion for a future vid for ya!! I’d be interested to see 😁☕️ Hope u and yours had a lovely Xmas and all the best for 2023 👍🏼🎉✨

I've never tried the cheaper smaller packet but i had paxo most weeks of my life till about 12 months ago i tried the bigger asda one thats almost 3 times cheaper than paxo and I can't say there's alot of difference. Never tasted them both together but both are pretty good. I always put the butter in them (whichever 1 i get). What i would say is that i cook mine in the microwave for 5 minutes....tastes fine imo.

Don't know how you can eat it like that Gareth. Base line for me is butter, salt and pepper at least. SUGGESTION for using up the leftovers is to make a Yorkshire Pudding and put some in with the batter, it's gorgeous. You could re-hydrate them too with a bit of boiling water, I never have it as 'stiff' as that.
