A reminder to all producers that deal with bedroom vocals and poor recordings (like myself). *PROCESS YOUR VOCALS BEFORE MIXING* If you're dealing with bad recordings, cheap mics and untreated rooms you need to clean up your vocals before you begin the mixing process. Most of the biggest engineers have assistants that do this for them before a mix (manually riding volume, clip gaining sibilance, removing noise using plugins such as RX etc). If you take all these steps yourself prior to beginning a vocal mix you'll have a much better time. My chain steps before I begin mixing a vocal in a session is as followed: 1) COMP Takes > Remove noise using RX9 > Remove Mouth Clicks RX9 > Clip gain sibilance 2) Volume automate the levels so they're even (Bounce and look at the wave form, is it consistent?) 3) Melodyne, Fix Pitch and Timing issues. 4) Repeat for all parts > VocAlign backing vocals to lead. 5) You are now ready to mix

Your stock vocal sounds bright and compressed bits. This not what a raw vocal track sounds like for all of us. We need to see how to get vocals from RAW to that hyper compressed forward sound. Starting with that kind of sound is 80 percent of the work done already.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! We're currently working on getting more "raw" productions, which can be a challenge due to copyright. Many engineers record vocals with out-of-the-box compression, which is the case for some of our demonstrations, but I definitely understand that isn't available to all engineers. Thanks for watching the videos regardless, and we'll work to improve them! SageAudio.com

@@TheSpeedyr6 they're very helpful for creative mixing and mastering ideas and for people who have a good grasp of mixing but might want to learn some cool and very useful tips and tricks. But I totally get that for beginners this might be a bit more technical than what they'd be looking for.

Ideally, mix in context. This might sound good in solo but it's different once with the rest of the mix

Here is a thought: With the signal chain example I would consider placing the De-Esser at the end instead of before the amplifying stages. If you De-Ess after attenuating, there is minimal sibilance and resonances prior to amplification. As you amplify through each insert, sibilances becomes more prevalent where the vocal sound harsh to the ear, even with minimal processing. Once the amplification, saturation, and final mastering EQ is in place, add the De-Esser. That way, it catches the harshness and sibilance after full processing. I would also consider reversing the 1st and 2nd Chapter option by adding Soothe2 and Gullfoss in that order after the De-Essing. When listening to the video using Mixing/Mastering-Based Headphones or Earbuds (Shure), you can distinctly hear the "Esses" and "Plosives", even with the dense delay and reverb included.

Correct me if um wrong but the vocal sounds already mixed and tight from the start, the rest of the processes are to enhance the vocals (Doesnt feel like "Start to Finish"). But for most of us the case is not similar we have to deal with pretty raw vocals with ton of boomy frequencies and harshness also bad dynamics. A good vocal recording is a way but miost of us dont have that option. Please make a tutorial on mixing with moderate quality raw vocals. (I hope you have some links with the vocal artist so that you can get a raw vocal easily just for tutorial purpose, you can tell them just to sing a verse for the tutorial)

Professional vocals sound REALLY GOOD alot of the time. Mixing is just setting it with th erest of the tracks. Usually Vocals are recorded through a compressor with good converters. And now meodyne lets you handle sibilance as well so they will have some nice compression, tuned, and sibilince clean up done to them.

You forget that most engineers have assistants that make the initial vocal sound clean and tight from the start (manually riding volume, clip gaining sibilance, removing noise using plugins such as RX etc). If you take all these steps yourself prior to beginning a vocal mix you'll have a much better time. Doing what I mentioned above, then using soothe as to cut raw resonances from a poor recording can help a lot, the rest is simply cutting the vocal into separate tracks to process each line that doesn't sound consistent one by one until the entire vocal sounds like a perfect take. Josh Gudwin is a perfect example of this.

seems like a lot of fancy cool tricks with expensive plugins, instead of just doing the simple stuff that's usually more effective and can be achieved with just simple native plugins (and when maybe polishing it a bit with one or two of these fancy ones later) :) most of your other videos are great though.

Hey Emen! If you have one you could create a convolution file from it! Record a sharp snare hit into your DAW with the piano's reverb on it, then export that as a WAV file, and use it in any convolution reverb! SageAudio.com
