I recently rented a townhome and when the owner showed it to me it had nice oak trim and doors and the walls were white, which went nicely with the wood and dark floors. He was in the process of fixing it up a bit, but to my horror when I went to move in, he had painted all of the wood trim and doors white and the walls a sickly beige. I was so bummed but what was I gonna do? He didn’t even prime the doors and all the paint is starting to peel lol. I’m sure he thought he was making it look better, but I much preferred it before he painted it. What a shame

Beautiful! You may want to consider putting a piece of clear Plexi over the wall paper above your stove. Vintage wall paper isn't treated and is real paper (as you probably know) and cooking oil and splatters will do the same thing that happened to the old oil residue.
@maribethwhiting71143 жыл бұрын
I was just about to suggest the same thing. They worked so hard on it I'd hate to see it get ruined. The house I live in was built in 1923 and the kitchen was all wallpaper. I wish we put something up to protect it because it got ruined and we had to tear it all off. I wish I knew how they were able to keep it clean and free of grease stains all those years before we bought it

Plexiglass? Please don’t cover it with that stuff! Sorry, I think that would be awful but I agree it needs something for protection.
@raraavis77823 жыл бұрын
I'm sure, you could also coat it with something. They probably make a product specifically for that purpose. I mean, I haven't checked, but it stands to reason. And otherwise, clear, matte acrylic paint should do the trick.

@@maribethwhiting7114 By being incredibly, even psychotically careful. It's the Depression era mentality. People used to be SO SO SO anal about caring for their possessions. They would fix and clean things over and over and over and never throw them away. My mother was like that and it drove my slobby self crazy, but years later, I understand. She grew up so very poor, that anything nice she owned, she had worked super hard and scrimped and saved for. I've never been that poor and I'm not sure--short of actual disabled homeless people--that anybody lives like that anymore, at least not in the USA. The Depression was just terrible. Ohhhh I've drooled over wallpapers from Hannah's! I LOVE The one you chose! Fun fact, my first job was on a construction site doing caulking and painting cleanup! So, if you want to paint those shelves green, sand them down first so the paint can grip, and then use a primer before you paint. It'll help tons! I LOVE HOW THIS TURNED OUT! AHHHH. Making me want to get my hands dirty in my own kitchen. I saw another comment say to put plexi behind the stove - but another thing you can to do help seal is just get clear varnish and paint the wall. It'll seal the wallpaper completely if you want it to, and help preserve it well! And, super easily washable!

Pulling the adhesive paper out was a good decision. Not just for the color but one ding with a plate or utensil, and there will be a hole on the paper, which then gathers moisture and dirt .That paper is not meant for kitchen counters, but rather for decoration on seldom used shelves or drawers. If you want to freshen up the countertops, you can prime them, paint and put a few coats of polyurethane, designed for kitchens cabinets. The doorknobs are brass and can be polished to the original shine.

The green wall makes an amazing accent wall. Pulls everything together. Beautiful job. For the white shelving, since it had a finish on it, to make new paint stick, sanding it with a very fine sand paper helps make it rough for a layer of paint to stick a lot better.

Just a couple FYIs for you, in case you'd ever like to revisit some of your projects that didn't work out the way you hoped: you don't have to limit yourself to contact paper to change countertops, you can absolutely paint them! You can use any regular latex paint, which means you can customize it to any color you like, and you just cover them with an epoxy. There is a Rustoleum epoxy that is really affordable (like $20-30) and, while application is a little messy, it's incredibly easy to use. I once painted our hideous countertops when we were still unable to afford replacing them, and they lasted beautifully until we demo'd them a couple years later. You can sit pots and pans directly on it, it doesn't stain, it's almost indestructible under standard use. The epoxy also gives it a professional look that makes them appear "original" as if they came that way, rather than being painted. I can't speak highly enough of that epoxy! Also, you can also paint coated/laminated furniture (your shelves) to last without any peeling or chipping, it just takes some preparation. The key is to lightly sand the surface to roughen it up and then prime it with an oil based primer. If you take these steps, you can paint almost anything with a regular latex paint. And lastly, beautiful job! It's so fun to see a renovation that goes the other direction and seeks to appear older, rather than modernized. It turned out so cute!

I bought my first house 2 years ago and I can't tell you how difficult it is to convince the contractor and people helping us with the house that Yes, I want it to look old fashioned. With respect to the door handles.. If you want to strip paint from metal without the nasty fumes and mess of chemical strippers, just fill a slow cooker with water and set the dial to high. The heat and moisture will soften the paint, and often it will fall off as a single piece. Then use metal spray paint for the color you want. Looks great and your Grandmother is awesome!

I boil the brass (and other painted metals like hinges) in either water and vinegar or water and baking soda. Pull them out and run under very cold water to make the last of the paint pull away. Polish brass afterward with fine steel wool and more vinegar or baking soda. Also, there are tension rods that would work great over a sink for the curtain. No screws required.

For future reference, whenever you are gluing something down such as contact paper or wall paper, put a pin hole where the bubble is and you can push the air out the hole. All of your hard work paid off greatly, everything looks so beautiful and from my memory of my grandmothers your house looks totally 1950's. I would leave the wall paper alone, so what if it's a little stains. It's supposed to be a 1950's house! Please be extra careful about the new appliances you bought. Those old wires can cause a fire at any time. Good job guys.

Love it and I was born in 1938 in Ohio and remember when they announced on the radio that the war was over. I stood on a hassock and saluted! lol And I remember taking piles of newspapers to school for the war effort. Margarine was a bag of fat (probably lard) which you put this red tablet in and kneaded the bag to color the fat and to add flavor. My mother had a wringer washer, so no scrubbing on a washboard. Well into the late 50s, my mother always wore a housedress and heels. Never saw her clean anything, but our house was always immaculate. And she loved to wallpaper!

So Pretty! I love how you have tied in the original kitchen colours with the wallpaper! ❤ A few hints..For shelving you can paint, go to the dressed timber aisle in Bunnings, look for primed mdf and Bunnings will cut it to length for you down in the lumber supplies section..The chipped baseboards could be also covered by glueing on strips of the same mdf or use melamine that is laminated white from that same section with the bonus that you don't need to paint at all..You could have cut out those oil stained sections of wallpaper using a ruler and a Stanley knife, sealed the wall with varnish or primer and rewallpapered over..Before wallpapering or painting, clean the walls with Sugar soap, then spray and wipe down with methylated spirits, you can get vanilla scented meths at Bunnings, its great for cleaning kitchens and bathrooms..Bunnings also sells a paint reno kit from Dulux to refinish your benchtops whatever colour you like..lastly..When you paint doors unscrew the handle plates first (same with switch plates on the walls)..Use a small roller and water based enamel on doors as it is washable..If you want to paint door handles, mask up around them and use a can of spray paint suitable for metal, give them several fine coats of spray paint and it will look professional and durable..Just found your channel..Off to watch some more! 😊👍

The kitchen looks amazing! The vintage wallpaper and the green wall looks so good! Aww loved seeing Grans reaction

Yes! I agree. If there's one thing that got my attention, that was it. The pink wallpaper really brings out the green in the tile. Before that, it looked too brown.

Love it💕 love the colors. I was born in the forties and grew up in the fifties and I love vintage kitchens. We had a toaster like that.

Keeping the shelves white really made them pop and complemented the door/trim. Looks great!

This is a trip down memory lane, Love it, I was born in 1940, so it's like going home. I could see my Mom wallpapering every room in the house, My first memories of a kitchen, even had a wall hung sink, which I think was a much earlier vintage. So warm and welcoming. and a family gathering place. right up until 2005, when my Mom went to live with my brother. My Dad built the cupboards, which were stained dark walnut. and we had a "modern", white youngstown sink which, because of a leaky crack, replaced the wallhung sink. I also don't like the "modern" look, especially complete black/white/stainless, to me it looks like a factory., with the warmth of an ice cube. Great job!

If you ever wanted to try painting the shelves, you could try to sand the surface first and then paint it! I love your videos! They make me so excited when I see the notification pop through
@chocolate-eq6jn3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The brown particle board is still 1970's style. Painting it would really make a difference!

Yes, sand them and use a good quality primer (even if the paint has primer in it). A topcoat of clear polyurethane will help it last longer as well.

I was really close to my Old Granny (my great grandma) and I really miss her, my grandmother (her daughter) is still alive but she's really, really, really mean and we've never had a relationship. Seeing your grandmother legit makes me want to cry and never stop. Beautiful kitchen though, thanks for sharing.

Is there a way to coat the vintage wallpaper so that oil splatters won't discolor it? Love the new kitchen!! And Granny's look was priceless!! I wouldn't call it Shrek green, but Kermit green! I love the two toned curtains! It adds to the wallpaper! Great job!

@@mickeymousey1239 that's was from the oil coming through after she put it up. I hope there's a way she can protect it from future splatters!

Great little kitchen. They make tension rods for places where you can’t nail or use screws. You can also use command hooks that don’t damage or leave marks on your walls to hang things up.

I like the countryside style kitchens. I don't mind the white and wood as long as there is texture linens and the decor keeps the interest too.

Hi Sage, the kitchen really turned out lovely. I had no idea there were unused old vintage wallpapers being sold. Doing home renos really is tiring and don't know how people buy homes and flip them constantly, but it's an investment. Grandma was very sweet!

A little tip for next time you need to wash a wall. Use a mop. A sponge type, not a string type. It’s so much easier. I painted my last house and did the prep with a cloth like you did. A few years later I needed to clean a wall in my current house and tried the mop. So much easier! I love the green colour! There are some beautiful greens out there and some horrible greens. The house I painted was horrible green 😂😂 Yours is beautiful green. It’s all really beautiful Sage and James. Great job! It was so nice to see Granny’s reaction too.

You did a lovely job! Love the green and the wallpaper and that wood shelf you found is perfect. I think my only concern would be how to keep grease from getting onto the wallpaper from the stove. I have beadboard along the wall behind my stove and even with my vent above it which helps greatly to cut doen on grease, I regularly have to wash that section of the wall and cupboards with cleaner like 409. I hope the wallpaper will be ok, it is just darling!

Wow Sage, I adore your kitchen make over!!! I feel so upset when people paint everything white or black, and remove all the beauty and cozyness from a place! Why are so many people like this? I f have felt quite alone in the passion I have about the vintage and centuries past aesthetics that I love . Thank you for bringing more beauty into the world!!!! 😍

The best way to remove paint from old hardware is to place it in a crockpot with water for about 10 hours the paint peals off and reveals the beauty of years past. I’ve been renovating 1910 craftsman house for the past 2 years and have used this method on all the original hardware.

I just stumbled across your channel, I'm in love! If you want to, all you have to do is sand and prime any thing then paint. If you want to change your counter you can sand prime and paint it. Then seal it with epoxy. It's also known as bar top. Y'all did an amazing job. I LOVE OLD EVERYTHING
