Dude... you gotta check out the band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. The bassist, Dan Rathbun, builds all these crazy, wacky homemade instruments that he invents, and the one that this video reminds me of is called the “Sledgehammer Dulcimer” (alternatively known as the slide piano log). It’s basically a seven-foot long wooden 2x4 with six grand piano strings attached to it and is played by striking it with a mallet (think xylophone-type mallet). The pitch is controlled by using a short metal rod that acts as sort of “movable fret”. The sledgehammer dulcimer is most notably heard on the songs “Powerless” and “Bring back the apocalypse”. Check out their live videos too. Super theatrical.

For quite a long time I wondered where I could find strings that long. Thanks for the insight ^^ I already ordered some to make my own build. How about putting a wheel under the string, like a hurdy gurdy ? That's what I will go into when I receive mine. I think I will operate the wheel with the help of a little electric motor, and put the controls somewhere on the middle of the stick. Two buttons to rotate it one way or the other. I'll keep you updated if you want ;)

I think it'd be cool to ad a second set of alumium bars but with bends in them, almost looking like stratocaster horns, the upper serving as a place to hang the neck strap and the lower as a rest for playing it on your lap.
@rasmusn.e.m10644 жыл бұрын
You could maybe use a golf club or something to hit the string with. That way the lower notes might be easier to reach. Alternatively, you could attach ball-bearing rails to the sides of the plank and make a slide with a slack lever attached to it, so that you can push it up further than you can normally reach. I hope this makes sense.
@SaidTooMuchProductions4 жыл бұрын
Played horizontal you mean? I think I get it, that could actually be a very visual performance lol
@rasmusn.e.m10644 жыл бұрын
@@SaidTooMuchProductions Not necessarily horizontally. I forgot that you can pluck the string further up the neck, so that explains the gold club suggestion (thought you had to pluck the string close the pickup). You can look up "contrabass trombone slide" to see what I mean by "slack lever" :)

@Loperfile4 жыл бұрын
Maybe try hitting the strings with drum sticks? Also Idk about vertical pickup placements. It might pick up the string 4 times and that low low tuning might be too muddy. Try to mix in a clean compressed version with a highly distorted treble boosted, bass cut to zero A/B mix. That's all I can come up with.
@MichaelEdwardsGuitar4 жыл бұрын
The tone you get from it is so rich! I would be interested to see a humbucker or active pickup. That way it would have less noise. Also, I don't know your wiring scheme, but twisting the wires also helps. That way all the incoming interference cancels itself. Also, carbon fiber strips for the truss rod instead of the metal could reduce noise. Also if you want to sit with the instrument you could set the audio jack end on the floor and add some weights on that end. That would at least shift the center of mass a little bit possibly reducing some neck dive. Just some ideas, it is a very tall instrument lol.

@PhillipRaymondGoodman4 жыл бұрын
Was thinking wrapping some ferro magnetic around the string just where the pickup is would increase the signal strength, surely if it's only picking up the core then you must be losing some of the bass? Though obviously the thickness of the string will effect the speed of its movement through the magnetic field regardless. Also wiring in a contact mic will give you an even fatter sound.

you could wire a second, reversed pickup in parallel, to act like a humbucker. (both pick up the same noise and humm, but one outputs it in reverse, so the signals cancel eachother out) stick it where ever, as long as it has the same orientation as the primary one. i feel that would even add to the almost comical weirdness of this instrument.

I think a guitar position could work if you made a bigger guitar-style body (like, bigger than a bass g.), and then have this as the neck, but angled. The bridge would be much further down, like an extreme version of how basses have the bridge as far down as they can. So with the body at the traditional position: - the bridge would be like, almost on the floor (additional support for the weight, since it would be really heavy with like 3+ strings) - the nut would be a few inches above your head, and depending on the angle, maybe even at a frettable position The output jack would be kind of a problem, but could be at the spot of the bottom strap button, with the actual strap buttons on the top horn ('d have to be super thick probably) and I guess at around the pickup. Had this idea around the time of the octabass video but I'm writing this now because it's kinda more relevant I guess?

I'd love to see these low strings with either an ebow or a normal bow. As one of those "amateur luthiers", levers could work, but what if you used a rail system and basically just made a slide that stayed on the string? Almost like a moving nut but from the top.
@SaidTooMuchProductions4 жыл бұрын
