I can see the changes from 1996. I can also see the increase in traffic. Yet, SaiGon is still one of my favorite places to escape from the frigid winters in Colorado. Now, if the city could only do something about those flooded streets!

Amazing to see the difference. My wife and I travelled through Vietnam in 2014 and had an amazing experience thanks to your basic language lessons - we can't wait to get back and see how much it will no doubt have changed again in 3-4 years!

Thank you so much for creating these videos for us :) I was wondering if you might do more of the basic language videos again, and maybe share some tips on how you learnt the language yourself? I am part norwegian and part vietnamese, but i never learnt the vietnamese language because i grew up in norway with my norwegian side of the family. But i found learning from someone like you who has had to learn the language themselves alot easier than from someone who speaks it as their native language. I really want to be able to communicate with my family better, but i find it very hard to learn vietnamese because of how its so completely different from norwegian or english.

Was in Vietnam in 1990 when you needed apply for a travel permit for domestic travel, which I didn't know and just travelled without, and at the end was caught by the police and had to pay a fine. Best travel ever. I can, in Saigon, see quite a big change already from 1990-1993. I also visited Nha Trang in 1990. Then it was a hidden gem just a little bit run down with a touch of French style buildings.. Already at that time it was talk about to be careful when developing the city. Look the result today. It's devastated with a busy motor high way and out of place mega structures. Many Vietnamese thinks it's beautiful but all I see is just another typical Asian city with a skyline. Soon if dropped down blindfolded in Saigon you will have no clue if you are in one of China's mega cities or anywhere in Asia.

Wow, what a difference! I was there in 1994 and 1995. I would not recognize it today!

I agree with you Mr Bowyer about the growth around HCMC with all those fancy skyscrapers, for it's becoming more ridiculous than something pretty. I would prefer the landscape of big cities of Europe. But the good news is that Vietnam is looking to Europe as an inspiration than in Asia, and also wish that the country will develop itself based on Eutopean influence.

"Pretty" is subjective, I like the skyline of Saigon as it is but within 10-15 years it will have a world-class skyline. Vertical space for a crowded city of soon-to-be 10 million is good. You can build skyscrapers and preserve older buildings, they're mutually exclusive most of the time.
