Mads, your idea for the brackets and wood toe rail will really set Athena apart from others and add some bling for her to show off with. Hey mads, I'm running twin victrons on my boat. Like you, I'm a 100% electric boat for cooking. What's really cool about the victrons is that they can power boost your genset. So, if you're running the genny while cooking and the demand exceeds the generators capacity, the inverters will boost the output with stored power in the battery bank. Works REALLY well!

I like the idea of the 2 stainless poles. It would give nice symmetry and an extra hand hold for safety. If you kerf and round the corner(s) of the island it would really match the head and settee and prevent banging into a sharp edge. Awesome video!

Aluminium toe rail profiles hold water; it's a persistent problem because the drain holes are spaced apart and not flush with the deck surface. Standing seawater immediately adjacent to a through-bolted aluminium toe rail is a recipe for water ingress issues down the line, no matter how good the installation job is. Your proposed bulwark solution will definitely solve that issue, and you get the added benefit of choosing the bulwark depth for security and aesthetics (a slightly taller-than-usual bulwark will hide some of the coachroof volume, which can make a boat look more sleek). It's a win-win! Also, another vote here for rounding the galley island edges off, following the same radius you used for the head's bulkhead; that would look super spiffy!

Mads, you can run hose out of the top of the diesel tank back to the top of the other tank for venting. You won't need a big one and if you are worried about siphoning remember to have it at the top of the tank and to put a loop in it inside the island (you could do it at the aft end of the island) before you run it back. Then you will never pressurize the tank of pull a vacuum on it.

Mads, I’d highly recommend padding between the fuel tank and steel frame. I’ve seen it most often done with “retired” conveyor belt strips or similar thick rubber (or leather). Heeling, hobby horsing, etc. will create great friction between the plastic tank and steel and eventually a hole will present itself flooding the bilge/ocean with diesel. I’ve seen KZbinrs making these repairs after a leak, Sailing with the Wynns, I think Atticus and perhaps a couple more that I cannot remember at the moment. Salt and Tar has done this on their previous and new build they are working on currently (probably a video in the last 8weeks) if your tank is not baffled it only increases said friction issue. Just my .02. If not make sure you are inspecting regularly and have purchased a spare tank in case they quit making this size.... Dan, Houston Texas 🇺🇸 stay well!

When venting a tank don't forget head pressure, If you were to over fill the tank, the head pressure on the tank is increased by the vertical height of the liquid in the vent. It pays to keep the vent height as low as possible for safety.

Hi Mads, I just wanted to comment on your toe rail idea. Having sailed my whole life, and owned several larger sailboats - with and without toe rail - I would suggest for you to give it a bit more thought. I know that the price is high, but there is nothing more convenient than a toe rail. Specifically if you want to extensively cruise, the convenience of a rail on both sides of your boat that you can attach things to is invaluable. preventers, bumpers, dinghy..... I like the idea of another pole, another handhole isn't bad in bad weather 😉. In a diesel tank the airport is mainly for pressure equalisation, but if you want to future prof your design I would add a second line so you can draw out fuel gases from the tanks if you convert to alcohol or bensin/petrol for some reason in the future or convert the space to a battery bank.
@helenforeman52194 жыл бұрын
Another option for fuel fill could be to put a deck fill on the coach roof , connect it to the tank by installing a Stainless pipe vertically down to the fuel tank to pipe the fuel direct to the tank. . This would also be another handy hand hold if braced well.

I don't think he can..can he? I mean, the tank is just there, what little would be to gain, wouldn't be worth it. Besides, this is a boat, so things are expected to have some tight fitting areas, they're both young so i doubt it would be huge hassle. Consider also, that on a boat, especially one of the size of Athena, at large, you do get some sway, so open spaces aren't your friend. I mean, some years ago, i helped a friend move a naked boat and had to go below, i suppose a wave was struck just the wrong way that i lost balance and had nothing to grab on, falling on my ass. So tight spaces .. not so bad under those circumstances.

The tank breather can travel to anywhere at whatever up and down you like, preferably finishing well above starting level, but before it does it needs a catch-can or a pigtail, both immediately above the tank so any slosh liquid drains back to the tank, similar principle as the airlocks on brewers drums, in fact a brewers airlock may be ready made perfect but a catch-can would work just as well. There is also no problemo if the vent eventually (pun intended :) ends up at the top of the day tank, it can go at any level on it's way there and still function perfectly.

Reminds me of when I filled water in my "new" Bayliner 288, approx 2 minutes afterwards I got a unwanted pressure test when a 3 meter volcano erupted from the water filling cap (which was still open). Turned out the tank vent was corroded and 100% sealed shut. After drilling through the "vent" I got a stream of air out, and could resume filling. Well...at least I know the tank isn't leaking.

When the sea is bumpy another vertical pole to hang onto is a really good idea. Then your venting is easy with no risk of air locks making you think that the tank is full.
@svbarryduckworth6284 жыл бұрын
Think of the IBTP genset as "upgrade-ready" since you can fairly easily swap the 102 out for a 204 sometime in the future to make it a full IBP if it proves.really necessary, and/or when you can find a deal on a used one somewhere. I like the idea of another stainless stripper pole coming off of the island to hide a tank vent. In a bumpy seaway there is no such thing as too many handholds at shoulder height -especially with so much cabinetry to run or get thrown into.

Although I have a 9,5 kWH Onan on Artemis, the concept is to draw all 230V power from the inverter via 24volt bank and let the genny drive a hefty 230V to 24V volt charger (ca 100A). I will retain the 230V to 230V load capability just in case (I have two emergency 230 bilge pumps). Hence, you need not to worry about the smaller genset you built (very nice job it is) get the benefit from having both battery and genny providing the combined power. Genny now has to run a little longer to get the batteries up to charge thats all.

Hey Mads, some advice on the toe-rail proposal: Plan to use those angle brackets as the bases for your stanchions. On my dad's old Van DeStadt 34 the toe rail was set up in a very similar manner. The teak toe rail attached to a piece of angle that was welded to the deck (steel boat). Welded to the bottom and side of that angle was a 50mm piece of stainless tube that accepted the stanchions. It worked really well and was a very strong base.
@flyingdutchman69844 жыл бұрын
He is going to need a lot more bases than stanchions, but I agree using at least some of the bases as stanchion bases is a great idea. It is crazy how easy it is to break most stanchions off. A stronger system to support his lifelines is always a good idea.
@belledetector4 жыл бұрын
With regards to the toe rail project. The toe rail is a rather intricate part of the appearance of your boat allthough not really a necessary part of the structure, unless it bolts the two parts together. To save time and money, I would fill and glass the hull/deck joint and fair it to a sharp edge and leave it for now. Later on if you cruise the tropics you can haul out in Thailand fi., and have them make you a nice teak toe rail and maybe a teak cockpit, for a fraction of the price.
