Here's a way to get the filter off with less mess. First loosen the filter, just enough that you know it won't take a wrench to turn further. Craft a pan of some sort that will fit under the area, then drill a small hole at the top of the filter. Now turn the filter 1/2 turn and drill another hole at the new top. The oil in the filter itself will run out and be caught in the pan--might be a 1/4 pint or so. When it's done dripping, the filter can be spun off and replaced.

Nice technique. I'll have to try that when I do the next oil change on my Yanmar. I just did a service a couple months ago so it will be time soon to take care of that.

The raised marks on the oil extractor tank are measurements. Makes it easy to determine how much you have extracted

I strongly recommend, when changing oils on your narrow boat use disposable gloves to protect your skin. Used oil in diesel engines is carcinogenic. Google up the lubricant manufacturer & read the Safety Data Sheet, for handling used oil.

Hey brother. I was reading the yanmar manual and they say fill it up to the top notch on the dipstick. I see you're going half way. I'm assuming this is to account for a new filter but that's the recommendation from yanmar at least. Cheers!

The decompression lever is to make starting easier if there is a problem. Just a lever, no lines!

He mentiones that a bit of oil will run down into the bilge and mentions that it is no big deal. Well, one drop of oil can contaminate about a quarter million gallons of water. Not that you want to drink the water in your harbor anyways but well, the reason why this is the case is because we collectively think "it is not a big deal". This is just a wordy way to state: Please be very careful that NO amount of oil / diesel / lubricant gets into the water. We all will benefit downstream. In a few years (10 or so) all new boats will use electric motors which will make this mess all go away but until then, let's all be careful.

You sir have grossly mis-quoted me, @5:55 I said change the filter after the oil has been drained (suctioned out) and place a rag underneath the filter in advance to prevent oil dripping down into the bilge when replacing the filter. Also, the boat and I hope most boats have an oil sock in the bilge. Good day to you.

Is there gear box oil that needs to be changed. If so how hard is that?

For the Yanmar we have, the gearbox oil is the same as the engine. It's the same procedure to vacuum it out and replace. It would be a good idea to check it, but i'd imagine the oil would last a lot longer in the transmission vice the engine. Good luck and fair winds!
