Okay that closing rocked. One old wooden sailboat bites the sad dust while one Catalina 27’ is being restored to last another century... Good on ya mate....she’ll definitely be right...

Thanks, I am not a shipwright in any stretch 🤓 I started the channel cause there were/are too many channels just spewing crap, some just wasting peoples time but some were down right dangerous. I thought that maybe I could counter some of it. I do find it a little problematic that I don’t get many viewers criticising me, I am learning all the time and welcome feedback both negative and positive.

Hi, i work in a hardware shop in the UK, the driver bits that didn't fit were Pozi bits and not Philips, a lot of people have the same problem over here identifying them.
@Catalina27
@Catalina27 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know all about the pozi bits I have Snap-On 100 piece kit that includes all the bits I’ve heard of. I know about J.I.S, Wentworth, SAE as well as the numerous different slotted screws from around the world from the last 100 years. The trouble it seems, its over time, standards have changed with different manufacturers. The bit that fit perfectly was a German made Bosch PH2, which is correct for the 1970’s US made screws. I just wanted to point out the importance of finding the right tool for any job. Thanks for the input, have I missed anything?
@Robinlarsson83
@Robinlarsson83 2 жыл бұрын
@@Catalina27 and still all the bits you showed were all Pozi drives except the last one that was a PH2... The one you called a PH2 was clearly a PZ2 :) it really isn't hard to tell them apart, if there are small "wings" in between the main ones, it's a Pozidrive. Afaik they don't even have the same contact angle as the Philips ones, so of course they don't fit a PH screw :)
@Catalina27
@Catalina27 2 жыл бұрын
@@Robinlarsson83 The purpose of the video is about the importance of using the right tool for each fastener. I didn’t realise that I had grabbed only Pozi bits when filming the sequence. That said, I had only one bit that fit out of over a dozen new PH bits. I guess I should pay more attention for the pedantic viewers, prolly not though cause I lump them in with the overzealous health and safety nut jobs, pun intended.

Did you ever think about fiberglassing the deck to the hull for a totally water tight seal?
@Catalina27
@Catalina27 Жыл бұрын
Nope, I’m not a Naval Architect, but I know enough about structures to know that too little flex makes them weaker. Like a sky scraper that doesn’t sway alittle will come down in just moderate winds, Boats are like that. Making structural changes is very complex and well above my pay grade, and 99.999999% of boat owners as well.

@@Catalina27 I only ask because I seen Sam Holmes sailing do that to his boat. ( Not a Catalina) but he's put 10s of thousands of miles on it in the last few years.

Yeah, I like Sam, he’s the real deal as far as sailing channels, not the sell out merchants most of these AG 1 drinking, Better Health bullshitters most have turned into. I know what these channels make and most are just greedy tryhards phoning it in every week. Don’t get me started 😂 I don’t know his background but his boat is a bit of a hack job but he has balls and skills for sure. He sails when most would be running the motor the entire leg, while making excuses the whole time.

@@Catalina27 100%. I bought a Catalina 30 a few years ago and have been improving it ever since. Totally rewired both 12v and 120v systems. Two weeks ago I pulled the engine by myself to remove the transmission. I rebuilt the ZF 5 on my kitchen table.. lol Just a few more things to button up before a sea trial. I actually share the same marina as Alphi from the channel Life is like sailing.

Hi, I would like to ask where did you apply the 3m 4000? and was it specifically for UV protection?
@Catalina27
@Catalina27 8 ай бұрын
I use the 4000 UV to seal the moulding trim and deck hardware, both because it might have to come off at someday, and it also because some it will show. The 5200 is only for things that are never disassembled and if it shows it should be covered up, because it will yellow in the sun.

@@Catalina27 ahh... i knew california had some weird rules, but that one was about to take the cake! considering buying a 1977 catalina 27. any thoughts or things to look for, and $2200 thoughts on whether it will be worth it? current owner now owns a second boat and wants rid of this one. from the pictures looks super clean. needs it bottom scrubbed is all i can see wrong with it. I would of course see it in person before committing to buying it.
@Catalina27
@Catalina27 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the early boats are fine, but they are old and most need a lot of work to be suited for anything more than just farting around close to shore / help. 2200 sounds about right for an early one. Note that the rig is old and needs replacing, the keel attachment needs to be checked carefully as it is expensive to fix and takes alot of time. The rig will cost about 1500-2000 in parts alone, no labor or stepping, including some new halyards and sheets. The rest is kinda nuisance stuff like the windows leak, and everything through through bolted might be leaking, the electrics are unreliable, etc. If it’s kinda pretty looking to the eye you can always sell it for about the same price. Keep the receipts for anything you spend on.

@@Catalina27 this is actually on a lake. I live in Oklahoma. but agreed, i am trying to arrange a time to go look at it to evaluate it. it has a brand new genoa at least so there's that! lol It is "ready to sail" so it is in the water already, anything specific to look for in the bilge?
@Catalina27
@Catalina27 3 жыл бұрын
That’s great, freshwater boats have much less problems👍 Look closely at the point where the mast support beam that makes up the corner of the head terminates at the forward end of the bilge. There is a piece of wood between the beam and the bottom of the bilge. This is usually glassed in but can get wet and rot. If it needs replacement, you can tell because the cabin top around the mast will follow it down and dish out the cabin top. Corrosion shouldn’t be a problem with the keel bolts but look for anything that indicates that the wood below the glass in the bilge has become wet and rotted. Nothing in the bilge should be ‘soft’ . I would jump in with a mask and check that there is no cracks where the hull meets the keel, or obvious repair. While your in the water check that the rudder is still firmly attached to the rudder post. 👍
