Күн бұрын

Our departure date to begin our sailing journey around the world is fast approaching. The last big sailboat power projects are to install the solar arch, install our solar panels, and finish fixing our generator. But with only two weeks until we have to leave, our generator project ends in DISASTER!!! We need to make a hard decision: sail without a generator; try to fix it... again; or replace the generator with a new one?

I had to watch that video three times. I got choked up myself all three times. The look on your face when that generator fired up was so, hell I'm lost for words. Both of you ought to be proud of yourself. Like the man said the things you may have to do out in the ocean you may not like it but you can do it. thumbs up for the both of you like he said. Doing everything yourself now y'all know every inch of your boat. I just now found your y'all. Now I'm going to look for what I've been missing from the beginning.

Came across this channel in accident. This is a great channel. I decided to take an "early" retirement last October and I recently have become consumed by the thought of sailing and indeed doing a circumnavigation. I'm not a handy fellow and seeing these stages of your preparation is awesome. Gives me a bit of pause. Keep up the good work and the awesome videos.

Hi you two, I've so enjoyed watching your videos and understand the ups and downs of owning a boat. You've achieved so much in such a short time, and as you're learning there's plenty of setbacks along the way. I think Butch said it right, you should be so proud of yourselves and what you have done so far, it will make the times yet to come that much more special for you both. The best part is you have each other, and that counts for more than anything. Good luck and fair winds.

Nice job! A can do attitude gets a lot done. Sometimes it takes someone else to believe in you before you believe in yourself. He gave you great advice for life and sailing. There isn't much you two can't overcome together. You will have to rely on each other for everything away from land. On another note. You should definitely get a high output alternator if you don't have one already. It can help recharge your batteries too. Good luck, and fair winds.

KØØL-Ā1D & CäŁyPšŌ Thank you! Couldn’t agree with you more - a can do attitude! Butch definitely gave us great advice - very lucky to have had his help and support! We considered a externally regulated high output alternator, but we still needed a generator to run our water maker, so we chose that for now. We still may get the alternator in the future because our battery bank is so big (1050ah). ~Mandi

Good for Butch! And great advice. What's your emergency plan? Dinghy vs life raft, EPIRB, water, food and survival supplies. Have you practiced your emergency procedures while heaved to in the open ocean? I would recommend practicing this with others aboard for safety reasons. I also wouldn't recommend using your actual life raft, as it's life is shortened when you inflate it, get it wet, etc. Leave it packed. But it's good to know who'd do what, when, and how, as well as how one of you would handle it all if the other were seriously injured.
@TakeTheWaters
@TakeTheWaters 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, so thankful for Butch and his support! As for emergencies, we have the dinghy, a life raft, EPIRBs, PLBs, life vests with tethers, heavily stocked ditch bag, handheld VHF, danbuoy, life sling, and sat phone. We've done some practice with man-over-board, etc. (never with actual life-raft), and about every time we go out we go through steps of "what if". Thanks your advice and interest in our well being and safety :) ~Mandi

Did not see you do it but hope you 1 put sealant on the bolt threads or they will leak and 2 When ever you put nuts S/S onto the bolts ALWAYS LUBE them as when you tighten them they will bind up and then the only way to undo them is to cut them off !! Use a ceramic grease on all S/S threads !

Glad you got the generator figured out. If you have a major issue with it again, 3 more panels and a couple silent air wind gens will probably get you more for less. Though you might not be able to run the air con. Good luck, happy for you, very impressed! Thanks for sharing :)

We considered that. Problem is I made a giant water maker that need's a ton of power. It makes 50 gph though. One day I'd like to sell the gen, and get more panels, lithium, a 5k inverter, and run 24 or 36v. One can dream lol. Thanks for watching -Brian

@@TakeTheWaters I'm glad you're doing it your way and not taking what an armchair expert like myself has to say. I was really more reflecting out loud. I'd love to have an all electric boat, not even necessarily for the "green" aspect, but because it would be nice to be 100% energy independent. I've just begun getting into sailing, hopefully by the time I untie the lines, solar paint will be developed and in in production. That could be a game changer!

Now that you have it installed make sure you take care of it. The first few hours are important for the engine. Also, unless you have lucked into a boat with an impeccable maintenance log assume the fluids and filters were not changed and do extra changes yourself on the main engine. Polish the fuel. Make sure all rubber/plastic spares are actually good. Many things deteriorate whether installed or not. Good Luck.

Little petrol(gas) Honda generators are always a good idea, my dad has on on his Halberg R, more than enough to run everything and charge the batteries, but get a long cable so you can out it on the foredeck, quieter. He has the 55hp engine on his, and no diesel gen, does just fine with modest solar and and that, plus he has a water maker also.

The stress in the cruising based not on the number of issues, but on your perception of them. Cruise with no problems, it's nothing but illusion and if you anticipate some degree of extreme and challenge, the stress transforming to the fun. (sorry my eng)

If you need more power in the future you can get that size solar panels with a slide out panel underneath so when your not on passage you pull them out and about 3 seconds and double your solar panel size
@TakeTheWaters
@TakeTheWaters 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! We actually already have an excess of power from the solars than the batteries can absorb, so things like great for now! ~Mandi

@justincase5272 4 жыл бұрын
@@TakeTheWaters: Bryon's is a good idea. I've seen a sun shade rig, just hand-stitched canvas to a couple of strings running beneath the top of the arch that lets the owners de-tune the solar panels to better match the requisite draw. Don't know if that's necessary with modern switching power supplies/converters or not. I suspect not. Another consideration is using some of that extra to power a backup water supply, or even a drinking water RO system. Most ship desalinaters do a fair job of removing most of the salt and minerals, but they can leave a fairly high sodium content. I know of at least one sailor who began experiencing kidney issues until he added an under-sink, powered RO system that brought the ionic solids down to near zero. Great for his kidneys! At that point, he needed to carry a gallon jug of healthy minerals to re-mineralize his near-distilled water with a scoop of the good stuff. If you take a container of water from your regular fresh water supply system to a water specialty store, they'll test it for you for about a third of the price of the unit, so I say, just save your money and buy/install the unit.

What came of the old genset? Was some smoke the only problem it was giving you? I wonder if the mechanic actually repaired something and the old residual oil had to burn out...I wonder if the smoke would have stopped....? Anyway, good luck in your adventures...

Sorry to hear of your problems a bit of a kicker having to replace such an expensive Item what $7000 - $8000. I am really surprised that a halfway decent mechanic could not diagnose the problem. Note that it could not of been one of a dozen different things even something outside the generator like dirty fuel. However since you put so much work into it you only left a couple of things it could of been which is why I am surprised it was not able to be diagnosed. Still that problem is now behind you so good luck on all your adventures.
@TakeTheWaters
@TakeTheWaters 4 жыл бұрын
Hi their. We tried to think of every possible solution to not replace it at all. Bigger alternator, more solar, no gen at all, no water maker, but in the end we decided to just get a new one. Would have rather bought more solar and lithium batteries but that would have cost even more, plus we just purchased a new AGM battery bank. The issue is the cylinder head. When doing a top down pressure test, air was coming out of the air intake from one of the cylinders. I had the head re-machined and they did a bad job. We already replaced the injectors, fuel filters, and so on. This process was going on for months, finally we got tired of trying fixes, wasting money, and being disappointed. We didn't want to postpone our sailing trip, so just took a huge hit to our saving and got a new gen. It was around $10K which means we'll have to shorten our sailing trip, but we're still out here and loving it. Having a working gen is great too. Sometime we cheat as sailors (once a week) and run the AC off the gen for a few hours while topping off our batteries, it's great! -Brian

I've seen others protect against delamination by always drilling oversized holes through the deck, filling them and drilling the required holes through the filler.
@TakeTheWaters
@TakeTheWaters 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think the newer fiberglass boats have a big problem with delamination in that regard, but I'll keep and eye on it. I did drill over-sized holes so the sealant would surround the bolts. -Brian

@@TakeTheWaters you were fighting time. I think the clue is in the name "fibre". It comes in sheets. No I'm not an expert. Who is? My understanding though, is that the plug you put in the oversized hole has two raison d'etres. To seal the edge of the laminate. To be made of non-laminate. Okay 3. To also not contain fibres that micro moisture can track along. did you completely butyl around them? On the backing plate too? Don't worry. I expect it can be done retrospectively if in time. Given your age and potential length of tenure due to that gorgeous girl, I'd schedule a revisit. The gantry will exert a lot of stress and movement of the GRP and that I imagine, will help moisture permeate. A check on any obvious ingress under the fittings will inform your priorities. Very best of luck kids. Ps cisco kid. I spent 43 years in IT 3rdline infrastructure architect. Mainframes, every UNIX flavour, Storage, Networking and a shed load of management toolsets (each one was the panacea). But that means I'm a trainee in everything else. Though we both know a SPoF when we see one. Especially if we put it there ourselves. Have a quick check t
