Sail Cloudy Bay

Sail Cloudy Bay

Күн бұрын

Sailing to Dutch St. Eustatius. Diving the reef. Getting Nitrox trained. Climbing into the pre-historic volcanic crater wilderness.
s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) has a wonderful sail from our favorite island of Nevis to Dutch run island of St. Eustatius (Stay-sha). Sailing down the lee side of St.Kitts we see the island in its full splendor for once, with no cloud covering its majestic volcanos. Approaching Eustatius we see its volcano, The Quill, along with the famous “white wall” on the NE side.
We anchor in Oranje Bay next to Oranjestad town which still has a lot of quaint colonial Dutch architecture. The lower town, once a bustling and thriving wharf was decimated by the English in retaliation to the island giving the first American ship a gun-salute in 1776. You can still see the remains of the stone wharfs, and some warehouses are nicely restored.
We have 2 dives in the National Marine Park and take our Nitrox exam with the ScubAqua dive school, run by a very pleasant Dutch gang. One of the days we climb The Quill and into the crater, which is like a lost world, untouched by Europeans. You could be in a Jurassic park film set.
We were overall very charmed with this little island, its cute town and warm people. But forecast meant we had to move onto St. Barths before we were really ready. 18-21 January 2019

Hypnotic just watching this awesome HR54 sailing..no music and no dialogue needed..just watching and listening to the movement of the boat and the wind and sails is so enjoyable.

It is so nice to see a boat being used as such as not just a way to get from one place to another withoout using skill or as a fancy home that just happens to move sometimes. You obviously love sailing and each other,. Few threesoms work but the trio of you two and youjr boat does, Thank you for showing mne what sailing can be,,

Ryan, glad you are enjoying the ride along with us. Also for the suggestions. For us, these videos are our memories that we are happy to share on You Tube. Like most people’s memories of life, we don’t film ourselves eating or sleeping etc. our videos are about the sailing, adventure, what it takes to maintain the boat and exploring our destinations. We don’t want it to evolve into a reality show like so many other You Tube channels.

I am so happy to see Sailing Cloudy Bay back. Also thank you for the reference to your Davits. I ordered mine from them should be here in th e states by June. But I do have another question. The stainless steel attachment rig you have for your A2. Was this something you designed. I am looking for rig like that for my Hylas 46.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
Leonard, not sure what you mean by my "A2"? You are referring to the shoes that the davits sit on? They were designed between myself and a stainless steel guy in Spain. The important thing on the shoes is to place them where there is a very strong section in the glassfibre, otherwise you will get cracks in the gelcoats as it flexes with the weight .... especially if you have to life the dinghy with swell - this put extreme strain on the davits and even more on where they connect to the yacht. We placed ours where the GRP had a right-angle into the swimplatform and also tried to get as much of the weight supported by the gunnel. I can send you close up photos if you like. Contact me through sailcloudybay@gmail.com

Those are Kapok or silk cotton trees. The wood is not good for construction or ships. Its wood is lightweight and porous; good for making carvings, coffins and dugout canoes. The silky fibers that disperse the seeds are too small for weaving but make great stuffing for bedding and life preservers. Soaps can be made from the oils in the seeds.

They are indeed lovely boats. But the newer designs, though very pleasing to look at and sail for a weekender, are not quite in the HR tradition of sturdy offshore sailing vessel. But they have to make money and the new recipe seems to be working for them. Sales are booming.
