Moving the genoa sheet blocks forward, especially when the genoa is partially furled, will relieve some of that helm pressure making the boat round up. You won't need to crank the rudder so far over to hold the nose down, and the boat will be overall more manageable in a gust like that or in a blow. Hope it helps. Fair winds.

I've got a Catalina 22 and I never thought about putting my short kayaks inside for transport. Thank you very much for that.

Our C-22 handled great in a blow with the mainsail reefed. This also eases weather helm.

Thank you for sharing your sailing experiences on KZbin. They are truly informative and entertaining! It was an honest and fun mini-documentary of your fun vacation. I did not know about the Key Lime Sailing Club and Cottages until yesterday. And the fact that they offer a complimentary Catalina 22? That is simply marvelous! I will definitely be planning a trip to Key Largo, partly on the strength of your video! Best to you, Markus and Greta! May you continue to sail to fair winds and adventure!

Vacationed there twice. Was maybe 15 years ago. Loved it both times and hope to go back if Ever live close enough again. Paul didn’t have any staff that knew much about sailboats. He upgraded me to the Captain’s cabin and gave me two free nights for re-rigging the boats so they were easier to sail.

Stumbled acrossed your video... We have a cottage reserved at KLSC for this march. So excited to get some salt water sailing under our belts. We sail our '77 O'Day 25 on a central new York lake. Hoping to transition to a warmer climate liveaboard during these long NY winters. Love the preview!

The C-22 is a standard fractional rig. It gets the majority of it's power from the main sail. When getting too much weather helm, it is best to take in a reef. Attempts to combat weather helm by reducing the amount of jib you have "reefed" in are seldom productive. A roller furling system makes for a handy way to deploy or store a foresail but not very good at "reefing". Sailors who'd like to have the ability to actually have a "reefing" jib can turn to sailmakers that build the reefing sail by way of a foam luff that take out the belly in a reefing jib. By looking at your video, you may get better performance in your rig by taking the main down a reef point in the main and leaving the jib where it sits. You might just get a faster, flatter ride. Other than that, It sure looks looks like fun!

It was my understanding that the main sail is mainly for balance and power comes from the Headsail. Flatten the sails and let out the main sheet just slightly to stop the heel.

I always thought those red and white flags meant “Hey everybody, come speed over here and see what we’re doing!” At least that’s what it always felt like when we flew one.

I have had an eye on the Key Lime Sailing Club for awhile, thought about it this year. We went to visit relatives in Boca Raton instead. Our hotel was twice the price of KLSC. Luxury but no sailing included! This seems like a good deal even if the cottages look a bit dated. Looking forward to trying this out, hope they did some maintenance during the pandemic!
@markusandgreta49412 жыл бұрын
The cottages are dated but clean, which is what matters most to us. I did make a snide remark about the Catalina needing repairs, but it was all minor stuff. The outboard was pretty new and we never had any issues. We are going back.

Let the travelor all of the way down, let your jib out (totally unfurl) pull on some vang, put on some outhaul and downhaul, then enjoy a fast, flat sail with neutral helm. You shouldn't feel anything but a light pull on the tiller in 12 -18 knots. In other words, flatten your sails. Feather up ever so slightly just ahead of the puffs, then drop right back down to your course...assuming you're on a beat. Any time you're off the wind, head down in the puffs and let it push you up to speed on a flat hull, head up slightly in the lulls. Hope some of that helps. It's great to see you're having fun! Cheers to Catalina 22's.

Great video. Was most of the ailing with the keel up ? Curious if have amps or some other areas that sailed too - We are thinking of doing this same vacation next year but wondering if will not be good for sailing as so shallow.
@markusandgreta49412 жыл бұрын
We had the keel about half way down most of the time...no problems. The Catalina 22 was perfect for the area that we were allowed to sail in.

@robertloyd8394 Жыл бұрын
You can connect the main sheet to the jib halyard and either forestay or trailer. You can very easily put the mast on your shoulder then pull the sheet with one hand and guide the mast with the other. I’ve done it lots of times.
