Sailing Bahamas, Sailing Exumas, Boysie Cay - Hallberg Rassy 54 Cloudy Bay - Feb'20. Season20 Ep11

We discover the unique Boysie Cay then have a sunset spa on the aft deck.
From Rudder Cay, our intention was to go directly to George Town, 25nm to the SE. But after just 5nm curiosity got the better of us and we diverted for a lunch stop behind Boysie Cay.
Boysie Cay had several unique features: a blow spout, a small wave pool connected through a narrow gap to the Atlantic swell and a sandy peninsula jutting out into the crystal blue water.
Square Rock island, Rat Cay and Pigeon Cays were also interesting to visit. The weather conditions were absolutely idyllic, so we decided so stay the night. And as we had total privacy too, Oana was treated to a hot spa on the aft deck, in the late afternoon sun. It was a very memorable day for us. 15 Feb 2020

would love a top ten of your favorite places so far as our tastes seem to match. My boat also designed by German Frers, not as nice as that Hallberg Rassey but I love her just the same. Hallberg Rassey was nicest boat at Annapolis Show in my opinion.

SV Amandolin well definitely the Bahamas all would be in the top 5! Norman’s Cay, Shroud Cay, Harbour Island, Spanish Wells. Others would be Anguilla, Nevis, Anagarda ( BVIs ), Dominica, Nantucket & Marthers Vineyard.

@@SailCloudyBay excellent. I am 48 and plan to retire no later than 55. Figure you are about that and your lovely wife 29. Sailed extensively in NE. Mystic Seaport staying at the Museum overnight is one of our favorites. Martha's Vineyard and Cuttyhunk also very nice. Starr Island and Monhegan Island in Maine.(so many darn lobster pots). Going to Canada this summer as Lobster season over in June. NO TRAPS in July and August!

Hi there, love the comment. We are both blushing. I'm a bit older than 55 and Oana alot older than 29! - she loves you! That said, I'm constantly telling her she looks like in her twenties, and she tells me I need glasses. Do keep your plan for retiring as early as you can. I always aimed for 50 and ended up 53 before actually doing it. We see and know soooo many other people who kept pushing it back only to have their health (or other things like aging parents, grandchildren etc) stop their retirement dreams dead in their tracks. Yes we loved New England. But didnt like north of Cape Cod canal due to the ridiculous number of pots .... and fog. And worse, both together! Plus that water is damned cold to go get lobster pot ropes untangled form the prop.

Ken Kaz haha, I’d better be on her A-list! She’s married to me :) When we were looking for a boat Oana wanted one with a bath tub. Yeah, right, I thought. Then she found this perfect size and comfort pool. So occasionally, when it’s warm enough, we are private enough, have enough hot water and all other stars are aligned, Oana gets her “tub” to relax in and do all those beauty thing women do in their bath tubs! We do have a funny story the first time she used it though .....

Having sailed the Exuma's a number of times in a 7'6" Draft vessel I can comfortably say I admire the way you are exploring wonderful cuts off of the beaten track. Well Done skipper! I also hope your post VD party explored all the limits of your bohemian desires as both of you clearly were off to a good start. :-)

arumrunner thanks for the nice comment. Yes, I had always thought Bahamas would be off-limits for our 8ft draft and we are super glad we discovered otherwise. We just had to work the tides to our advantage. Once we’d done a few cuts our confidence grew and grew. Also made good use of the drone and dinghy with mobile depth sounder to find the deeper spots for anchoring. We surprised ourselves how many times we risked only having a few inches under the keel at anchor, on low tide. But it’s generally nice soft sand there anyway :) Never again will we panick when our 15ft depth alarm rings!

Sandra Renwick it was filled with hot fresh water! When we bought the boat Oana said we should look for one with a bath tub. Ha! Yeah right, I thought. Then she found this blow up pool which is just the perfect size and comfort. So when we have privacy and the air temperature is right and the boat not rocking and we have enough fresh water and it’s heated and all the other stars align .... Oana gets her treat! ..... like not often :)

Drew Mullen actually, we were just making water anyway. We didn’t think about the hot tub till later in the day. Our water tanks are 1 ton (1000ltrs or 300 gals) so we usually have enough for the bath tub which uses about 1/4 of a tank.

Nice way to escape, the trouble is of course the price. A used HR54 is about one million USD, and then all the upgrades. You're very lucky.

Yes Frerik, we are shocked at the price of HR54s on the market today. If they are actually selling for anything like that money, maybe we should sell! If I take the price we paid in 2016 plus all the expensive upgrades plus all the running costs for last 4 years, I still dont come even near to that amount! Nice to buy a yacht and have it appreciate eh? So yes, I guess we are indeed lucky to have purchased when we did. But you can also escape and do what we are doing on other equally good yachts. For instance, HR53 or the older Amel 54. These can be purchased for about 1/3 of the price you mention and they are still excellent ocean yachts.

MrHotbulldozer yes, we should have done. At least it went back in the water alive and well. Unless we are certain it’s not a species that carries the toxin issue here in Carribean we usual return them to the sea. Not so for Mahi Mahi or Tuna. They always end in the fridge.

BiLaL BuTT very good comment and question. It seems our popularity is slowly growing but we don’t mind as the videos are primarily for family and friends to see what we are doing, and for our own memories. The 2 likely reasons are a) we dont make videos to make money, so maybe we do t have tat professional edge to our editing and b) we don’t like to flaunt semi-nakedness just to draw audience. Most of the very high viewed channels do that. Why they would want their wife’s/girlfriends bodies ogled at by millions of people, we really don’t understand. Well, actually we do - they want to make money!
