It's a rollercoaster of emotions aboard Innerbloom this episode! We discover and explore the renowned beauty and wonder of Middle Percy Island with our friend @VernonDeckLearningByDoing and Jake and Justine from Oasis 2. A little first aid, an old goat gummin' on star fruit and a hike through the scenic landscape of this deeply historical and awe-inspiring island. After an arduous evening of a rolley anchorage and no sleep, we decide to stick with the status quo and join the convoy of yachts heading to Scawfell Island to seek refuge from the SE's. We make some seriously poor decisions, and pay the price of our naivety on what we consider one of our most challenging passages yet as novice sailors. So, I normally won't comment like this, but I need to say this for both of you. Josh, I've sailed around the world twice. I've had my share of loves and finally found the one for me. I was lucky enough to have spent 19 years with the most beautiful, funny, smart-ass woman of my dreams. She passed last year from COVID, and yeah, it sucks pretty bad. But, I see in Phoebe those same similar traits. No joke, you're not going to find better than her. This is your journey now. And Phoebe, keep dubbing animal voices and being such a cool chic. That's a great sense of humor. Here's the kicker for both of you... your relationship brings out the best in one another. Foster that. Hey... that's an Aussie beer right. I still like Fremantle ales better though. but hey, The tough times that scare you Phi or the times that might try your patience Josh, those are the ones you're going to cherish even more as your relationship grows. Put the sheet into the whisker pole first then push it out and clip the beak to the mast. Also your main needs to be eased a tonne. That’s why the sea state is making it hard to drive. Probably should have a harness on in that slop as well. You’ll get there, great to see you’re having a go. Cheers Adrian.

Hey Adrian thanks heaps for your input mate! I’ve had sheets in the pole first previously and it scared the crap out of me when the sail luffed or backfilled whilst trying to get into the mast, ramming the pole in and out. You need a roller furler on your bow so you can control everything from the cockpit. That damn hank on jib has gotten a lot of people injured over the years. There's a reason you don't see hank'd on jibs anymore. A used but working profurl system is good enough to start and I see them for sale pretty cheap.

Ahoy Josh and Phoebe. Glad to see your still enjoying. A cruising tip, with sufficient wind behind your beam, you might like to try running under headsail alone. (Think of pulling the boat with a headsail instead of trying to push it with a mainsail, a lot like pulling a trailer behind a car going forwards compared to trying to push the trailer with the car in reverse). In many cases there will only be a slight decrease (if any) in speed. And in most cases this will almost remove any weather helm making Innerbloom easier to steer and easier on the pilot if your using it. Sailing under headsail alone (unless running dead down wind) will usually negate the need for a pole as the main is no longer creating a wind shadow on the headsail. If you do have the headsail up and wish to ad the pole like in this video, you can run the lazy sheet through the end of the pole before you set the pole, then swap out the loaded sheet for the lazy one (bit of a juggle depending on number of cockpit winches etc, attaching a line with a rolling hitch to your loaded sheet and then to a sufficiently strong point will usually suffice) Best wishes for next seasons sailing. We do notice slightly more roll when sailing down wind with only the jib, like you said negligible speed loss and significantly easier to helm and setup. Such a win mate, thanks for the tips! Sailing deep downwind 101 ... get onto course, ease main fully (boom close to stays), fit preventer to stop accidental gybe. Ease headsail right out, if headsail won't fill (due to main blocking it's breeze) then set up pole on opposite side to main (put "lazy" headsail sheet in end of pole BEFORE raising pole), raise pole, then pull headsail across to pole. Practice in light air first.

Agree with previous comment re position or main (hopefully preventer on to stop unintentional gybe) . I also agree with clipping on to sheet first but the easiest way is to have lazy sheets set up on both sides. If you had a sheet outside all stays and through a turning block on stern and attach to headsail with snap shackle . To do this you would to wind in headsail sheet attach lazy . No pressure on this sheet at this stage. Attach outside end of pole to lazy push pole out and attach to mast. Run back to cockpit take pressure on lazy which becomes new sheet while releasing other jib sheet. I know this will cost money but what you are doing at the moment is dangerous. Best wishes

Look up “swell bridal” that is a way of bringing the bow into the waves at anchor instead of rolling like crazy. Next You clip the sheet on to the pole first then push it out and clip it on to the mast second. That way you can push the sail out as you put the pole up. Practice in calm weather. You need jacklines, life lines, and life jackets. Practice man overboard in calm weather too. If you can get RYA courses in Australia then do RYA comp crew and day skipper course. The advise below is good but add control cords that open the beaks, suspend the pole with the topping lift, pick up the windward sheet then connect the other end to the mast. Also try reducing your wheel movements and anticipate all changes of direction but all hard helm inputs will need to be controlled before you over run the desired course. It all comes with practice and a set of safety lines with body harness should be worn in those conditions. If you go over the side at least you stay with the boat. Enjoy your sailing and treat every sailing day as another learning curve as the sea is very unforgiving. Best regards, J

Hey guys thanks for such an honest video. Agreed PFDs should aways be worn on deck in open waters and especially short handed. Josh she is a keeper but so are you. So stay on board or be clipped on with a PFD. I see a lot of comments here about clipping pole to sheet then to mast, it is a good way but also requires the sheet to be eased to easy push the pole out enough to chip to the mast. Also be very careful clipping to the mast if the sail is moving and putting pressure on the pole. You could lose a finger if you get it caught. Another way is to gybe the headsail and put the lazy sheet in the pole then set pole to mast and set guys then gybe the heady back to the correct tack. You guys are doing so well and have learnt a tone. Keep it up!

With your lack of experience in mind........you guys made the right decision. Personally, I never sail dead down wind, people call that wing-on-wing. Your vessel will roll like hell and a chinese jive can happen, despite a preventer. What I do: Broad reach. Boat at hullspeed. You do not have a course in a straight line to your destination. Then you douse the headsail, on main alone you go upwind, then tack, fall off and hoist your headsail on the new leeward side. And off you go again. Back on hullspeed. No stress on sails or rigging. I give it the name "downwind tacking". Dead downwind is not the fastest point of sail for the majority of boats. Oceanracers never do that. On my boat I tried wing-on-wing. She is a Waarschip 1010. And I noticed that I reached my destination using "downwind tacking" 20% quicker, and 100% more relaxed, than sailing wing-on-wing. Same starting point, same destination (from Enkhuizen to Makkum, Holland) and same wind direction/speed(SW/5). OK, different boats react differently. Your thoughts and maybe other sailors would like to comment on this comment.

Quality episode guys. I was holding my breath for at least 5-6 minutes. Didn't even know I could do that. Hard to offer you any advice, from this side of the screen in that situation, but I would have thought you might have been able to get away with something like a storm jib. As Sir Francis Chichester used rounding Cape Horn, on Gypsy Moth 4. Mains can be tricky beasts to deal with. You could have done with an extra crew. Yep it's a "if only " or "hindsight" moment. Like you alluded to Phoebe, if he fell overboard, what then. Just a quick Q and A. Have you taken time out to practice a "man overboard " exercise. Ever. Fenders work great as the man. Never forget as newbies, don't stop asking questions. No half decent sailor will mind answering your questions to help you. In this scenario, there's no such thing as a stupid question. Glad you are both safe. Best advice I can give that applies to everything in life, that I taught every soldier when I was in the Army, as well as my kids. Ask yourself 5 questions: 1. Why did I make the decision I did? 2. What went wrong? 3. How could I have done it different? 4. What were the consequences? 5. What did I learn? Answer those 5 then move on from there. Great video - once again you convey the stark reality of sailing - at times it really sucks! But these are the memories that will stick with you. The learning curve is going well! Good to hear you acknowledging your own complacency at times and the need for safety. PFD as a minimum, harness preferably - you will get to know when you have to wear it! Sailing tired messes with your head - it is an absolute emotional roller coaster and physically draining too. Makes it fun, but safety has to be number one. Tip 1: Rolly Anchorages - Use a "flopper stopper". Put a strong bucket out on a line from the end of the boom (if it doesn't sit well just put a rock in it). It helps a lot. If you get really keen put another one out the other side on your pole. It takes the wickedness out of the rolls and will help you get more sleep. When I first cruised the coast years ago most boats used a flopper stopper of some sort, many people had quite elaborate set ups of metal trays like crab pots with a hinged floor - no-one seems to anymore which amazes me. Tip 2: For Josh. Hang onto Phoebe, she is a gem. For Phoebe. Hang on to Josh, he is a keeper, don't let him go over!!

Pull the pole further up the mast.clip in the sheet then lower the pole..go off course and have both sails to port..set the pole then gentle gybe the main..way safer ..and easier for the helmsman..no stress , no danger, no tears....look after each other n stay safe..I'm in Airlie Beach if you need a hand at all..run to the shops etc with a car let me know, be nice to meet you both..local skipper, been here for decades.

Phoebe, Make him wear his safety gear when he's out on the bow in the rough water. If he goes overboard he might have to float a while before you can get back to him. Have you guys read up on man overboard procedures?

Oh the ups and downs of offshore sailing but you two are tight as... and that's the main thing. You will enjoy the good sailing so much more because you've got through the bad ones. A couple of tips that may help - Josh, it's hard to pole out the jib with a full length spinnaker pole. A whisker pole is just that - a short "whisker". Phobe, the hardest helming job on a yacht is dead downwind in a seaway in a strong wind. It takes lots of practice to get it right you will get there. A good trick in 5-10 knots is to set the gear up to sail dead downwind, get it sailing nicely and close your eyes for about 30 seconds. Feel the wind on your face to know what angle it's coming from and your feet will tell you what the waves are doing to the boats angle to them (your bum if you're sitting down). Finally, Josh on safety, investigate jackstays from stem to stern down both sides so you can clip your lifejacket tether to them and work the deck safetly in a storm.

To Gullwing a Jib leave the jib on the same side as the main, while keeping the wind at 150 true Set up the pole on the windward side near the forestay, Put the lazy sheet into the pole. Go back to the cockpit and steer down to nearly 180 True while easing the working sheet and pulling on the lazy sheet and the jib should come trough onto the pole and then the pole should come back until the downhaul is tight. Also you need to ease your mainsail out a lot more. Spent out a 9 month honeymoon doing the same trip up the east coast on a Cat. Lots of luck and have fun:)

This! Set up the pole first with your head sail on the lee side then you have the lazy sheet lose to clip through the beak before setting it up. Then gybe onto new course. I don't think it's really safe to clip the active sheet on then try and get the beak onto the mast ring with the wind in the sail flapping and filling forcing you into a dangerous foredeck dance trying to get that beak onto the ring with the power in the sail. Set it up first at your leisure then gybe across. Great emotional episode guys!

Normally you clip the pole to the sheet when it's still tight, then as you lift the other end to the mast let the sheet out, use the topping lift to hold the weight of the pole. Lots of mistakes here as you are clearly aware. Its very hard to steer - or do anything - downwind with the main sheeted in hard. Let it out as much as you can and put a preventer on it. A strong one. I use a dock line rigged from boom end to the bow and back to the cockpit. Then you can rig the headsail while wearing a harness. Keep the leaches tight on both headsail and main for less rolling. Look up a flopper stopper for rolly anchorages - you can make one out of plywood etc. and a swell bridle helps.

When you are sailing downwind try easing the main sheet..... a lot.

As others have noted you often seem to sail downwind with the main radically oversheeted. Then you have to compensate the poor balance with the helm which is really hard work, uncomfortable and slow. The boom should have been out as far as it would go, the limitation being the length of the main sheet or the side stay. Leave the whisker pole for a couple of years.

Thanks for posting this. it is both impressive or naive that you are out there in winds beyond your skill level but sometimes thats what it takes...you just "do it" that said... you need a to review your "points of sail" in relation to the wind direction. you didnt need a pole as much as you needed your main out if you wanna run in 7 knot true. finally how do you plan on reaching a clue thats over board!!! i am sure you know by now... it should be downhaul, the topping lift then clue, Ioved the video and that you are safe!!!

Well said my friend! When you have the choice between two crappy options all you can do is choose, commit and do your best. Ideally next time it will at least be after a good sleep! I sheeted the main in when we were dealing with the headsail to minimise any further risks aboard. I usually travel the main sheet car across to reduce potential of accidental gybe, and then if releasing the main sheet further we will run a preventer. As for the clue overboard… your guess is as good as mine. Silly tired brain Josh. Cheers mate

First things first….. When stuff turns pear shaped stop trying to film it. You need to concentrate 100% on the task at hand. Lets be brutally honest here you’re new to this game and you’ve got a massive learning curve in front of you. The ocean gets way, way gnarlier than what you’ve seen to date so far. Treat the ocean with the utmost of respect at all times, she does not care for who you are and she takes who she wants when she wants. Get a furling headsail, some jack-lines, harnesses, wear life jackets with Epirbs on em ALL THE TIME and clip in whenever you’re outside your cabin in bad conditions. This means the cockpit when you’re helming too. Throw a basketball overboard and see if you can recover it before it disappears, its harder than you think. Practice man overboard drills and get everyone comfortable with all aspects of running the boat solo. If you do lose someone over the side the other person on the boat has to know what they’re doing in order to rescue your loved ones. Sounds scary?, it should. You’re in one of the harshest environments known to man and you have to be on your A game at all times. You’re learning everyday, which is awesome!. Keep your chins up and most importantly be safe.

You need to get more confident with wing on wing with a prevented main - you don’t always need pole, just set the job opposite the main and let the wind fill it. I’m sure you are figuring this out and you should be proud of your efforts. Also giving directions in 5 degrees port or starboard is clear and she needs to be confident what that looks like. You guys are doing great, but keep the life jackets on and learn how to stop the boat by yourself and practice Man Over Board drills - maybe with a Buddy boat.

Definitely not as easy as some make it, we have 1 motor broken so can't dock easy to get fuel especially in the wind, water is a pain aswell but I wouldn't change living on a boat and travelling ❤

Put some beetle tape on the screws. Its the best to use to stop a ling from a screw or bolt. A sailor should always have a roll of beatle tape. That's what we call it in America. I'm not sure what you call it. I need to send you kids a care package.

Hey mate, we run it sheeted in whilst doing head sail changes to minimise risks aboard. We only let the main out once preventer is set up. Otherwise we might travel it along to catch more air. Cheers, Josh

Your main sail did not look properly trimmed it is too deep. Also ENE. You double reefed and 5 knots that seemed like a pretty nice boat condition and I might not have messed with it. It looked easy on the boat. 5 knot average for your size of boat is good.

First of all,safety gear for all, never ever do this without being harnessed in. Then sheet to pole first,then pole to mast. Slack the main and make sure the preventor is there, best to practice and practice. With that, practice man overboard. Even with practicing, Ive seen people at the helm totally loose it and if it was real, Life would have been lost. Super cool video but lots of wake up calls.

My partner and i scrambled, argued, screamed, cried, sulked, ignored, fought, floundered, panicked and ultimately winged it the whole fkn way up to hinchinbrook and back to the GC. So ya can all stop swingin' your big egos. Did any of you all actually leave the dock-marina?? Go back over that sequence, the "I don't want to jibe" scene. play it word for word and see if you can invent/derive some key words to better, and more calmly, describe your desire for her actions - reduce the communications to directives, not ? emotional stuff ? You both did well but my uneducated, ready to be ignored, knee jerk reaction without being there - was that your were both speaking different languages and did not realize it - my GUT FEELING is to boil it down to simple one or two word commands/requests. My father "Stand by for a 90 degree port turn", "Execute". More than a few words but the words were unfailing. IGNORE ME if it does not help.
