Hi guys. Great video and makes for some good watching Just a little advice. It’s not a race As soon as your having weather helm issues or issues inside the boat slow the boat right down Reef earlier or heave to if your needed down below to look for water leaks etc. Your both doing a great job. Keep the videos coming and enjoy your sailing 👍👍

Something to consider. A submersible pump you can deploy and plug into your electric with enough hose to discharge overboard through the hatches. You can even get a small portable gen to plug it into so if the electric fails it will still work.
@kapow13248 ай бұрын
Not the best idea...you won't be opening hatches in storm conditions when you need to urgently pump (after leak finding). Also the potential for oil or diesel in the bilge water would turn the decks into an ice rink, adding a potential for going overboard / loss of life.
@patraic52418 ай бұрын
@@kapow1324 Storm or Gale conditions are a whole different scenario. Having an option when all else fails is never a bad thing. There are so many instances where boats were lost in otherwise fair conditions because a thru hole failed.
@kapow13248 ай бұрын
@patraic5241 Yes multiple options, systems and hierarchy based controls to reduce risk is fundamental. Done properly can be the diff between life and death. Running mobile with potentially fatal AC voltages and carbon monoxide around a flooding boat, using a portable generator just adds unnecessary risk. Issue shown appears to require routing the bilge lines on an incline to a vented loop. Poorly made, installed and maintained thru-hulls and valves sink boats.
@patraic52418 ай бұрын
@@kapow1324 What risk when all else fails? This exact scenario happened on another YT channel not that long ago. He almost lost his boat when a seacock broke off on a day's sail. He was saved when a nearby SV brought him a submersible pump and a little gen to power it. He now carries Both himself. You hope you never have to use it but when you need it you need it Right Now.

Cheers guys, I appreciate all the great points raised in this conversation. We now carry a small genset that was given to us at the boat yard, I just had to put a new pull cord on it. I’m going to buy a 240V pump and a drill pump just to keep up our sleeves. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it hey? Also next haul out new thru hull fittings and valves are on the list! Cheers, Josh

Taste the water, if it's fresh water its from inside the boat. If its salty, it's from outside the boat.

Hi guys you need to move your bilge pump outlets to above the waterline. On mine they exit at the stern with a non return valve in the line. Below waterline bilge pump outlets are a disaster waiting to happen.
@Thenewkidsonthedock8 ай бұрын
Hey Davo! Our bilge discharge is usually above the waterline when at rest, however as we were healed over it was well below. We also have non return (check valves) in line. The white valve with red handle is for our exhaust out let on the stern that is also above the waterline but I will get onto replacing the valve! Cheers mate, Josh

Also I have just noticed that you have a white valve with a red handle below the water line. These should not be used below the waterline. They are prone to splitting. Next time you are on the hard, replace them with trudesign composite ones.

That top bearing were the shaft is sliding should hav a ecentric collar to lock the shaft in place, you also need to try different phases onthe uni to stop the hard soft feeling in the helm, if you guys are still in the townsville area i can show.

Came here to say this. It’s either that or some have two small grub screws that tighten down onto the shaft.

Also looks like the steering rack is hard mounted to the boat with only one clevis on the rudder end. The arc of the rudder would be side loading the steering rack pretty bad.

Hey everyone, really appreciate your thoughts and insights into our steering system! This is a system I have never felt extremely confident in. When we purchased the boat it was described as bombproof to me. On the final leg of our delivery of the boat back to Ballina the steering rack uncoupled which helped me learn about our emergency tiller 😅 I would appreciate any ideas on an improved steering system as we really need to find a way to implement an auto pilot that operates off the rudder post. Cheers guys, Josh.
@nutsandbolts4328 ай бұрын
Should be able to remove a bolt off the rack and slide the shaft out, then spin the wheel. I doubt the problem is in the rack after seeing how bent the shaft is and how much movement is in the bearings. You could wrap a little sand paper around the shaft, working it back and forth to sand away some clearance on the beam where the shaft is making contact.
@Thenewkidsonthedock8 ай бұрын
Hey nutsandbolts, good thinking! I’m also working on getting a reliable auto pilot set up that operates off the rudder post if you have any ideas! Cheers mate, Josh

@@Thenewkidsonthedock luckily you have a steel boat, so welding on tabs and brackets is straightforward. Personally I’m good with hydraulics, and would look at an agricultural system like SV Seeker did on his junk rig. Way over built and 110% reliable, plus cheap. Requires ingenuity and know how. Otherwise, any “off the shelf” autopilot system would work. I would imagine any yard could weld on the brackets for $50 or so. The electronics is the expensive part. Look into getting a sponsorship from B&G, Raymarine, Garmin etc.

Still no PFD's? You are sailing reefed with one person in the cockpit and the other the cabin resolving bilge pump issues. You are learning valuable skills/lessons with each passage. What is it going to take to learn that you need to wear a pfd on passages? One small slip and your lives could change.
@Thenewkidsonthedock8 ай бұрын
Hey Thomas, Josh here. Yes we weren’t wearing PFDs, a few months later reviewing the footage for the video is where we do most of our learning. Unfortunately that doesn’t enable us to implement it week to week as we wish we could, same with our sailing techniques. Best believe next season you’ll be seeing plenty more of us in our safety gear. Cheers mate!

Hard not to, but using the helm as support to keep yourself upright during rodeo rides (push/pull) is naturally going to loosen, wear, bend it. All that heavy diy automotive setup is just some guys idea of reinventing the wheel. Cable steering is much simpler, lighter, very easy to diy, incl remote repairs. Check out some other boats for ideas. KISS.

@@Thenewkidsonthedock NP. Another thought in-case never done, drop the rudder (on hard or shallow water), service/replace bearings/seals, consider ways to improve it, should be little free play/knock, able to turn easily with one finger (also easier on AP).
@deerfootnz8 ай бұрын
Non-return valves are inherently very unreliable. You should have spares on board and if the system depends on the checkvalve to not sink, then it is wrong & dangerous. Bilge pumps should outlet above the waterline on or near the centerline so they cant immerse when heeled. So in practice this means the transom. And any line like this that can siphon back in MUST be fitted with an anti - siphon loop which is as high as possible right under the deckhead. All connections must have double hose clamps which must be inspected regularly replaced every few years.
