OUR FIRST SQUALL: Sailing to the abandoned resort on Brampton Island - Episode 34

This week we hoist sail (and don’t fret, the main first this time) and make passage from the safe haven of Refuge Bay at Scawfell Island through our first squall to Brampton island. Although our 40 year old cruising coral coast book tells us we can visit the ‘thriving resort’ we arrive to a different scene. The now abandoned resort was closed to any visitors, so we made do harvesting our first coconuts! We hope you’ve got some warm fuzzy socks on, because it looks like rain up ahead!

Josh, you are so much more comfortable than when I first started watching your channel. You don't grope anymore when changing your hands from line to wheel like you used to. You just let go of the line and put your hand on the wheel without hesitation. I noticed the same with Phoebe when she moved the boat by herself last week. she just naturally reached back and caught the wheel, even though she was nervous. It is great seeing you both grow and become more at ease with it.

Great music this vid Phobe and you kids have now got the sailing down pat. If you're guddling along at 5 knots with a comfortable sail plan and no motor you are still going to get to your destination. Below 5 knots then you have to change gear and do something different.

I must be getting old, I just remembered I hadn't responded to your question. I loved the manta ray swim. I have seen other encounters with manta rays and they have been very interactive. I thought so too! But apparently the young, green ones have more water and very slimy flesh and the older ones have less water and meaty flesh! As we travel further north we eat more coconuts and learn more about them, and find that opening up the young coconuts doesn’t reap the reward worth the effort. - Phoebe

Interesting a petroleum company owns Brampton island, when I've read that there's huge amounts of crude oil beneath the great barrier reef???😮😮😮 some people believe there's going to be a maritime environmental disaster on the reef allowing companies to start drilling for oil 😢😢😢

Wow we will do some research on that. It will be devastating if they attempt to extract oil from under the heritage listed Barrier Reef. There are so many pressing issues that are putting that delicate eco system at risk.

Great question Dave! Our boat previously had a tiller, later converted to a helm (wheel). Due to the small center cockpit the only place to put the helm was facing backwards. So there we go! Cheers mate, Josh

Hey John, thanks for watching! We always keep it real on this channel. We’re naked all of the time, especially when we sleep naked and we’ve woken up and it’s stinking hot and humid. We don’t put clothes on until we start sailing usually. As you can see, we didn’t use that clip as the thumbnail, and no nudity is seen - just my neck and upper chest. Josh doesn’t have his shirt on in most of our videos and no one says anything…but if I have my décolletage bare then it’s nudity and click baiting? I filmed that little intro while Josh was getting the boat ready, and I was still in my bday suit 😝 If we were using nudity for viewers, we would have made it the thumbnail! We will always pride ourselves on filming true events and situations, and if that means doing a little piece to camera while we’re naked (as all yachtys know is the norm!) then so be it 😁 We appreciate where you’re coming from though, and of course know that we’d prefer to have subs & viewers from quality content rather than sexual.
