After sailing around 1.000nm since leaving Panama, KARL is finally reaching the Rio Dulce in Guatemala, where we will spend the hurricane season. We had a nice and fresh last sail from Guanaja and entered into the Rio, where we motored through a limestone canyon covered with lush green forest - breathtaking!
We parked Karl in Mar Marine and after a short break (me flying home, not a break in UNTIE THE LINES, no worries ;)) it will be time for some boat work during hurricane season!
Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Its great to see your sunburn has healed. And your hair looks wonderful. Glad to see your boyfriend is helping you. Have fun in Germany and don't worry about the boat work. It will always be there. This video was really wonderful. There was so much detail in the shots that I had to pause the video just to take it all in. My Sister in law is from Guatemala.

When I was 13 my family returned from Tegucigalpa to Washington, D.C. on the Pan American Highway. We ventured over to Antigua to check it out. I just remember hearing about the volcanoes. We got lost in the jungle when Dad tried to take a short cut he heard about from a local resident. Good times. Thanks for the videos.

Great job Nike. Can you tell us more about your ride up river in the Rio Dulce? Was it shallow in places? Could you sail the entire distance if you wanted to? Any hazards on the way? that type of thing.
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +Penney's Automotive Service Center Inc., well, at the entrance, there is this bar...and you need to go over that at high tide...Karl and me did not have to worry too much cause we only have 1,3m draft...;). Sailing all the way up, hm...depends on your boat, I guess. Usually, in the evenings, the wind will come from the east, so that would be good to sail up. But it does turn around a bit, the Rio that is...You can defenitely sail the Lago Golfete part. If you stay in the middle of the Rio, depth seems pretty fine. There is a couple of more shallow parts...but usually you will see sticks pointing out...or by simple logic you can figure it out (where rivers mouth into it, corners etc.). And I think it is mostly sand, so it won't be too much of a hard bump if you do hit the ground ;). There is lots of fisher nets, so you have to watch out for those. They are hanging on tiny little styrophome bits that you sometimes don't see until you are pretty close, so watch out for those. Apart from that, not really any other hazards I could think of. There are tons of little bays and rivers to explore, and of course, Lago Izabal. You will see more of that in the upcoming videos :) Guatemala is really beautiful and the people are great, so go check it out!! Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Hi. I was thinking that if I can criticize, I can as well give some ideas. Up to you if you see them as useful in future. I don´t have much sailing experience but my interest has grown during the last 6 months. Who know if I will do 180 deg turn in my life and go sailing. Now I just try to increase my knowledge base. I have learned that sailing is a very technical performance if you start looking at small details. Fast and lightweight boats continue sailing while heavy and robust boats must start engine in light wind conditions. In various wave conditions some boats follow waves smoothly while other boats hit the waves hard depending of keel and hull construction and other features of the boat. When staying at anchor, some boats start rolling heavily from left to right when another boats feels nothing. It would be interesting to hear how your boat behaves in different wind and sail combinations. What speeds you can achieve etc... Maybe you don´t have experience from many other types of boats so you could compare but you can tell about this specific boat that you have now. Basically I hope that you could tell more what technical stuff is happening onboard on passages and if you encounter any interesting regulations and rules while crossing country borders etc. Have a nice day ))

@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 8 жыл бұрын
Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Hi. There is a few interesting and well done sailing documentaries in KZbin that I have followed. I accidentally saw your videos from season 1 and got very interested to see how you will manage to sail solo. How it will be mentally and practically. In your first videos you claim that this will be a solo sailing experience. Now in season 2 I can already see that there is constantly a man in the background on your boat. Now I feel very disappointed because in my meaning there is a big difference between sailing alone and in company. Maybe many " patrons" want to support you financially because they believe that you sail alone. Now you slightly deceive them. Your videos will be interesting even if you have friend/boyfriend with you, but maybe you should be truthful at least to them who send you money. Do you have any comment to this? Did I misunderstand something? I wish you good luck anyway. It is awesome to be able to just leave everything and just go ))
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +Hannu K, you had posted this comment on another video as well, so I will copy my reply if you don't mind. KARL is my boat and I am trying to be able to sail him single handed, that is still my goal. But I also said from the beginning that I was not after any extremes and that I did not know how long this was going to go or in what way (who can say that about their future anyways?). In my opinion, it is normal, that if you meet people in life that you get along with well, you want to spend time with them. Just because I have a You Tube documentary that started off as a solo sailing documentary it means I have to stick to it for the rest of my life? And it means I cannot sail with others to learn from them so I feel well prepared to take off by myself again? I have to say that I dislike your choice of wording, saying I was deceiving people. If I sail solo, I sail solo, if with crew, with crew. I am not hiding that in any way, so where is the deceit? If someone decides to support my videos, they do it COMPLETELY voluntarily. If someone decides that if someone is sailing with me, they do not want to support my videos anymore, they can click a button and the money stops coming. They could even decide to pay for those where I sail solo but not for those where I don't. I am not forcing anyone to pay anything here. All the videos are free of charge to watch on You Tube. So feel free to watch them if you enjoy them, if you don't, then just don't. Pretty simple in my eyes :) And, just another note on the topic. When I bought my boat, I had sailed maybe 2.000nm, which is not a lot. I did not have much experience about sailing. And still I wanted to try to sail solo. But along the way, I realized that it would do me good to sail with crew for some time. Which does not mean I will give up the attempt of solo sailing. If you are interested in how someone is trying to single hand...than this is my way of doing it...! Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Ok. yes. I first commented another video but it was from 2015 and I was not sure if message came to you. So I wrote again. Thank´s for your reply. I understand that you started alone but met him somewhere during your journey. Very normal thing. But the thing that started to disturb me was that you still in videos give impression that you are very much alone and do things by yourself. In reality you now sail as a couple and he helps you in everything. Maybe financially also-who knows. Maybe you should bring him more to daylight in videos.Now that people who support you with money, maybe should be aware of your real status. Anyway....your videos are interesting to watch and I will continue ))))

----maybe I will clarify my point little more and then we can leave this subject. Your personal life-who you sail with is totally your personal thing. I am thinking completely from supporters side of view.There are many groups of people who sail around the world. Everybody have different story to tell. Common for these companies is however that almost everyone need or at least hope for financial support from viewers.I believe that people who follow these stories and decide to give their support will make a choice who to give money to. Totally voluntarily, of course.I think that there is a big difference if a woman is sailing alone and struggling alone with all kinds of problems...or if there is bigger company who sail together. I would personally give my support to this solo sailing woman. If then later I would notice that this woman only give impression that she sail alone in order to get supporters sympathies and in reality have company with her- I would maybe feel sorry. Of course your journey is long and many things will be different than what you planned in the beginning. Maybe later there will more friends who sail with you in your boat.....I hope that you understand what I mean in my text )))I will give a practical example from fantasy: Maybe you would in one video tell how you decided to change your rig...and do it alone. You wonder how you can do it but anyway decide to try for yourself. You show in 10 min video with tools in your hand how you untie screws and start the work. In reality you have hired 5 men to do the work and you go to nearby hotel with boyfriend to rest. In the evening you zip pina-colada on terrace when workers fix your boat. When rig is changed, you post new video where you tell how hard work it was and how your body is tired of all work. Now maybe many people would feel sorry for you and send lots of money...voluntarily of course...but would your story be a truthful story? Now I don't say that this would happen but only one example of how it could be....Ok..have a nice journey.....I am curious to see if you will present your company in future videos ))

+WhiteSpotPirates Hannu K 7 minutes ago Sorry..something happened with first part of my text. Maybe text was too long and you only receive last part......I am not so familiar with youtube stuff )) I will write first part again -otherwise everything looks stupid:I wanted to clarify my thoughts little more....Your personal life is totally up to you. Where and with who you sail with. I am only thinking from supporters point of view. There is many groups of people who sail around the world. Everybody have different story to tell. Common for all companies is however that almost everyone need or hope for financial support from viewers. I believe that people who follow these stories and decide to give support, will make a choice who to give money to. Totally voluntarily of course. I think that there is big difference if a woman is sailing alone and struggling with all kinds of problems by herself ...or if there is a company with several people sailing together. I would personally give my support to this solo sailing woman. If I later would notice that this woman only give impression of sailing alone-only to get sympathy of viewers, I would feel sad.....(now let´s see where my text ends whe I press enter)......

Hi Hannu K, honstely, I think I do not have to tell people about my fincancial situation at all. People are supporting my videos because they know that there is a lot of work that needs to be done to do them and they enjoy seeing them and that is why they support them financially. It's like going to the cinema more or less. If you go to the cinema, you don't expect the movie maker to tell you how much money he has...acutally, you are quite aware he has quite a bit and still you pay...;) I have always mentioned when Matthieu or others came on board and I have always said "we" if there was other people than just me involved. I have never hidden it when people have helped me, why would I? Without all the people I met along the way that have helped me, I would not be where I am now, because I did not know much at the beginning. If you did not get to see enough of the handsome Matthieu and would have liked to see him more in videos, now THAT I can totally understand ;) ;) Also, I am not sure if you are aware of it, but I sailed around 700nm solo in season 2, way more than I did in season 1. Anyways, I hope I could clarify my point of view towards this topic. Ahoy, Nike & Karl
