I’ve done the Baja Bash…if you time it right it ain’t bad, but rounding Mendo sucked making negative VMG at times and running close to shore, pretty much just outside the blunts reef light because further out was 40+ knots from the north…next time I’m going to Hawaii and then to the PNW…not worth it unless you’re already starting in SF and have plenty of time.

A few points to consider: Cabrillo made it up to pt reyes after battling to get around pt conception. They called it and decided to head back to san diego The worst peacetime disaster for the US navy ocurred off pt honda, just north of conception. A number of destroyers went aground The two largest waves in the world are jaws in hi and mavericks in san fran. Both are generated from the same winter storms as they sweep east to west I think one could say that sailing north along the coast could be possibly ranked along with cape horn Either go south or head way out. In either case the window is aug/sept Spring winds blow from feb to july. Snow starts in oct in the cascade range in WA. Mavericks starts breaking in nov thru feb Its not just the specific break but the 3,000 mile fetch of 10'+ swells that is the problem

I should add that big sur was called that because it was no mans land. There was no real way to get there, so it was simply called " the big south"

I know it's not much, but Crescent City, California deserves a mention. It's a better stop than Bodega Bay. Sorry to Bodegans. But, yeah.

Great video and lots to think about. We’re in the PNW and own a 35 foot sailboat. Contemplating sailing south to Baja someday. The thought was to just have our boat shipped back. Didn’t know sailing north was even an option.

I have transited all the areas south of SF, and agree 100% with all the advice. However it is "San Sim-eon", not "San Simon". That is an interesting stop as well if you can get up to see Hearst Castle.

What a really cool video this was to watch. Thanks you. I live in San Francisco and used to go to many of these places to windsurf and dive when I was younger. I am now retiring and "Re-Learning" sailing and learning how to sail bigger Keel Boats. Taking the ASA courses here in SF Bay to start building a current sailing resume and be able to get insurance for when I buy my boat to cruise on. SF Bay is fantastic to sail and explore but definitely challenging for most. I was walking on the beach at Crissy Field yesterday watching/feeling the nice 16-20 knot breeze coming through the gate along with a 4 -5 knot flood tide. No Fog though. I've been debating buying here and sailing south going through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean. But I've made the decision to go to Florida for a while and buy there and cruise in the Caribbean from there. Hope I get to meet up with you sometime.

@@ChasingLatitudes I think you are right, it's just that I am seeing extremely mixed messages about what Hurricane Irma did to the Caribbean boat market/availability, and then how it has been exacerbated by the past year of Covid Pandemic. Some say there is availability, others say it's totally a sellers market with good boats hard to find... It's hard to know from the outside what the truth is. I've looked at loads of brokers sites and it's a complete mess of misleading information. So I thought I'd temporarily move to Florida and begin my search for a boat in the Caribbean from there. Maybe get a "Buyers" broker to help.
@ChasingLatitudes
@ChasingLatitudes 3 жыл бұрын
I'm here in the Caribbean now, what you say basically sums it up 100%. I also rode put hurricane Irma in the keys when it landed as a category four or five at the time. Dont buy hurricane boats EVER. There is lots available here but yes the recent issues have caused a mess of the bkat market. For instance the vessel I am looking for there is one and only one in the americas :( ☹ there is a great jenneau down the road from me thats only 75k and a stunner. I'd be happy to help you with your search. I offer one on one consulting for only 50 a month or you can join the members area for only ten per month and chat with myself and members from all over the world looking for boats and in various stages of learning/purchasing and im there daily to answer any questions. Come on over let's chat further in depth and see if we can save you a lot of money in the process

Is it safer to sail across the Pacific to the Americas, or to pass through the Suez Canal? If one wants to see the safe destinations, obviously Cape Horn and such are no goes, but are there subtler caveats?

I'm really new to sailing, is there a safe way to traverse crab pots? I'm from Humboldt and I've dropped pots from an outboard but I've only heard concern about hitting the lines from sailors.
@ChasingLatitudes
@ChasingLatitudes 3 жыл бұрын
Best to traverse areas like that at day time, they are fairly easy to spot while sailing during the day as you will only be doing around 5 knts. The issue with hitting them is them getting snagged in the prop. There are line cutters you can attach to the prop to help a bot with this but really just sail the areas during the day and keep a close eye out
@SeanHickeyMarineServices

Typically crab is only fished in depths of 50 fathoms or less…75 fathoms is considered deep deep gear 👁 over 65k miles logged on the west coast, never hit a pot…grew up on the east coast hit them all the time ⛵️👁

The main reason for not sailing off shore is the Aleutian current/ California current that flows south. Also, anchoring at Catalina island and the channel Islands is far superior than stopping off at Marina Del Rey.
@ChasingLatitudes
@ChasingLatitudes 3 жыл бұрын
My man, there are numerous ways in sailing to achieve the same thing, this was as stated a simple in shore route that most sailing vessels can handle. This was not a OMG this is the perfect and only way to accomplish the trip. You would also smack directly into the pacific high on the off shore
