I like Gemini legacy 35 catamaran because it fits in most slips and has dual motors easy to maneuver. When I retire I think its a modest sail boat to live on and it's made here in Florida.

I’m living aboard and sailing the SF Bay. When I started looking, I thought 45’ was a good starting point. Thank goodness my broker steered me to a 32,’ boat. I was up and sailing my first summer. I didn’t have any classes, except a navigation class from the Coast Guard Auxilliary. That saved me on insurance. The smaller boat is challenging as a live aboard. It’s really small, but I’ve been doing it for 4 years. My real point is that learning to handle a small boat went way more quickly than I could have expected with a 10’ longer boat. I’m ready to move up to an older, longer boat.

I'll be very interested to see how in depth you go from an objective stand point. We have offshore cruising dreams, so our Valiant 40 fits that idea. But any rate I find their is some disconnect of cost of maintenance for a well found boat either new or recently refit.. vs an older boat that you just leave with before refitting. The two different boats with everything else being equally will have drastically different maintenance schedules. I find the majority of budget talks exclude this. The loa gets talked about a lot so I'm sure you will nail that to death too.. but I'd be interested to see a break down between a well found Bluewater boat vs the coastal cruiser for Caribbean cruising. Ie potentially stronger systems in the Bluewater boat so may last longer... (I get this from the auto world, the less stress you put your car under the longer it lasts and if you constantly bring your car closer to the max it can do the quicker it wears out). I find the majority of budgets get destroyed either by marine ignorance or financial ignorance. Ie they bought a bad boat that costs a lot to fix up or they can't budget for the life of them... so be interesting to see how this plays out... Sorry for my ramble, just thinking out loud, feel free to ignore.

All good 👍 let me know all the aspects you would like to hear Md I will try to discuss them as objectively as possible.
@AfterDeath19863 жыл бұрын
@@ChasingLatitudes oh it is more of a general sense. Ie blue water cruisers are more likely to install water makers and thus bringing down the cost to get fresh water. But increasing the cost of the refit to be able to do so. Or how a lot of cruisers keep using sails that no longer hold their form properly and thus should be replaced.. yet still works as sails albeit less effective. Or how Bluewater cruisers rigging etc may be just a bit stronger or how in worse weather they fair better then coastal boats... To be honest I can't think of to many more.. I just do coastal cruising right now, while refitting my boat.. preparing for a launch offshore and I work a lot more then I sail due to the boat being 14hrs away >.< I enjoy hearing more perspectives.. my theory is if a fellow wants to minimize his monthly expenditures while cruising and wishes to leave with a prepared boat... then installing a water maker, new sails, new rigging, new electronics etc etc will do that. While it could all cost 50k.. or more.. it also means potentially you need to do it again for another decade or more... so my idea is before I walk away from my high paying job, I'll upgrade and fix every possible thing I can to bring my monthly cruising costs down and then throw 'x' amount of dollars into a repair slush fund.. but hard to find reports on if this is a good plan or not. Blah been up to long, I'm rambling. Sorry I'll stop 🤣

This is definitely going to be a very interesting series, I actually was looking at boats today for the very purpose of going to the Bahamas and etc.. I was looking at boats that would have a shallow draft.1,500 dollars or less was a little low from my initial budget I was guessing more of like 2,200 to 2,500, but you know way more than me about it.

I'm actually taking 103 as we speak. I did 101 4 weeks ago. And I plan to do 104 as soon as I can. I'm in San Francisco and the prices here are FAR more expensive than anything you have shown. One of the issues here apart from much higher prices, is that they have requirements for you to charter from them numerous time prior to being eligible to take 104. So that adds to the price. But the upside is that I am only 10 minutes way from the school, and don't have to fly to another country to do them. Having said that, my end goal is to buy and cruise in the Caribbean, so I am now wondering if there is a 104 course in the Caribbean that might be better, and put me in the location I want to end up in. FYI.. SF bay sailing is really challenging and therefore you get some really amazing experience of all kinds of difficult conditions here.
@ChasingLatitudes3 жыл бұрын
Woohoo, congrats on the classes. Yes the prices are drastically different depending on where you take them. San fran is a great place to learn as you said due to the conditions. That is something I feel a lot of novice and even advanced sailors confuse. Nauticle miles do not equal experience, conditions do. I can sail the next 5 years here in the lesser Antilles, never have an issue and never learn anything. On the flip side I can ride out a category 3 hurricane and learn more in a day than in a life time. Conditions are everything
