We've been at this boat life thing for over a year now and we realize we never answered this question, "Why in the world did we buy a boat?"
We have a couple hundred nautical miles left to go to complete our passage from Florida to New England, a 1,000 NM journey that isn't without tests. During this final leg of our trip, we're answering that question and again, this trip will test us physically and emotionally while sailing through tropical storm-force winds.

Emily and Cole, I just wanted you to know how much I'm enjoying your channel. I watched Emily on WWSB and was an early fan of her bright personality and easy-going, natural style of presenting. Cole, it's been fun getting to know you, enjoy your humor and emerging seamanship (I think we'd all enjoy an evening laughing and swapping tales at Marina Jack). I grew up on boats (power) and it was actually my parents buying a boat in SRQ that brought me to live here many years ago. So glad you were able to handle the storm and hopefully you'll get some good rest in port. Red skies at night! Jules

The thing is, they had time to heave to or wait out the storm to pass and they kept on trucking. I wonder, if you’re reading this, would you do anything different? Ps I’m not done with the video so you may have answered it.

On a catamaran it's usually safer to turn downwind in a storm as long as you have sea room. We have weathered several on our catamaran over the last 8 years and 25,000 miles.
@adventurecrews
@adventurecrews 4 ай бұрын
Hi Laura! That's a lot of miles! Tell us more please! Why do you think it is safer to go downwind?
@markthomasson5077
@markthomasson5077 2 ай бұрын
I was going to say that previously. Downwind, your speed is subtracted from the wind speed, opposite upwind. You are going with the blows (hits). Unlike monos, cats are very stable downwind. That said, best if you have a good drogue system to control excess speed. Of course, this cat may look a little like a performance cat, but with that huge amount of windage, and relatively narrow overall beam,she more towards a motor sailer. So comes with powerful engines, so slowly motoring upwind is also a good option.

I have a L-40 s/v Truly Amazing we meet at Just Cats while you prepped the L-42. I have two 3 blade Max Pro feathering props. I put my props in reverse most of the time. If your doing over 6 knots in Neutral my props begin to hum. Max Pro and Yanmar said reverse if ok. With that said as 10 sailors and you will get 10 different thoughts.

Cruising is not for sissies!😅. Love how you monitored the approach of the storm, and doused the sails. Damaging the sails is a pain in the rear removing for repair and replacing. Doubt you would dismast her. She’s strong! But the sails blow out in squalls.

God i hope you know that if you get caught in a storm and your sails are up, to turn on your engines both of them and turn directly into the wind to drop your sails. You will never demast your boat if you don't panic and follow those simple rules.

Hey Cole and Emily! Boats looking great glad you’re enjoying it! I’ve been watching the journey and the growth! Don’t worry about your saildrives they are splash style bearing and are under the oil the entire time so it doesn’t matter weather you’re running or in neutral. -your favorite JAS Marine mechanic 😊

I prefer feathering props as opposed to folding props. I prefer immediate power and a simpler mechanical connection inside. The folding props have some jankier internals. Also when you power up folding props typically have this long violent throw when it unfolds. That can't be good over the long haul. If you do get a folding prop stay away from the flexofold (spelling might be off) brand. I've known so many people to have problems with them. Also always get a three bladed prop for better performance in currents...about 33 percent better.
@adventurecrews
@adventurecrews 10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! I am with you on that feathering props!

We love our Flexofold props and you have it backwards. Folding props are much simpler mechanically.
@allynonderdonk7577
@allynonderdonk7577 4 ай бұрын
@@laurapitre5797 I've had three friends have their Flexofolds fall off for no reason. It costs thousands to replace. When talking to them they believe galvanic corrosion/lack of effective anode action on the set screws. That or the unfolding process being so violent that the set screws shear combined with potential galvanic action.
@markthomasson5077

Folding props (I assume) won’t catch ropes and weeds as readily as feathering props. Ideally with feathering, you should have adjustable pitch.

Guys trust your boat. I've been in 60 +ft of waves & 150 kts of wind. The wind turning the backs of my legs purple. Like a big hickey. And I was only on a 50ft Cutter. So calm down.

No in 1991 we were caught in cyclone Rodger between New Calidonia & Australia. We ship wrecked eventual on Cato Reef & were rescued by coast guard. it's a big story. And I would do it all again. But only if the outcome was the same. When you go into survival mode you aren't scared. You go into action and are driven by pure adrenaline. But at the end of days without proper sleep you crash. The best adventure of my life because I now no what I can do. However I was a lot younger then. BUT TRUST YOUR BOAT. Fare winds.
