Had some health scares that are now looking ok, boat is coming together nicely, Hank is all fixed up, learned so much this winter working on boats, and even managed to squirrel away a few quid for the obligatory summer cruising beer tokens, you know, to do our bit and help kick start the economy again 😁 Hope you’re keeping well 🤞🏼🍻⛵️

Never mind the dodgy bonding, that peardrop anode is the wrong way around!! Also, when replacing that peardrop I’d recommend using the stainless bolt sets - they’ll be much easier to undo next time & if you’re really lucky & anchored somewhere warm it’s sometimes possible to change them simply by diving under the boat!

Wow, sorry to see that cone! Our Sheltie sustained an injury to his right paw and the vet found a wood sliver from our fence between his toes. On went the "cone of Shame" for a couple of weeks plus antibiotic pills. Next, after the cone situation we took him to be groomed and lo and behold he came back "skinned" they had to remove all his fur because the undercoat was matted too much. Next on the upkeep of our pooch is teeth cleaning. It seems just like the boat upkeep genre' you guys are going through! Hope Hank is better. He's a good lookin' doggie!

Great video! Anodes are often a misunderstanding . Of course it can be due to poor bonding that they are not being sacrificed. But it may very well be because you did a good paint job on the bare components. Think in terms of the cathode should be much smaller than the anode in surface area - if none that is the best. Admittedly you look not to have had use of the anodes so this could be that the electrical connection is not good enough - you can check using a multimeter and check there is virtually no resistance. I have exactly the same set up as you and I use a minor amount of anodes each year. Remember that VP sail drives have no electrical contact between housing and internal mechanism and prop., so finding a bare patch is tricky.
@stevenr8606

Good to know all well. As for your outdrive the zinc repair to the outside was questionable. However, the main 'ground plate' has issues! While working on the grounding plate, install a Galvanic Isolation device. Their are many to choose from (ProMariner) in the 60amp range.
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the input, are you taking about the zinc on the sail drive or the one on the starboard side of the hull being questionable?
@stevenr8606
@stevenr8606 3 жыл бұрын
⬆️ as it appears 'NO' damage was seen on the saildrive the zinc had no job to protect... this a good thing e.g. not to be grounded! ⬅️ do not touch its electrical wiring system. The 'MAIN' zinc as a ground is a problem! BTW, in some other countries marines, you will find, make a Galvanic Isolator a mandatory install in the vessels electrical system, to protect you from others and the marinas electrical grid. But, you knew that. 😎
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevenr8606 I really didn’t know that, I’m so new to all this and really appreciate any and all feedback. I’m learning so much every day! So are you saying that connecting the anode to the main engine, via say a wire in the boat, is bad? In case I read that wrong?
@stevenr8606
@stevenr8606 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a VOLVO-PENTA, they isolate the saildrive from all electrical components. They even have a plastic spacer between the engine an drive; even special washers for the connecting bolts & RUBBER isolation for the shift cable. They even have a continuity test, which most don't know about, until as a boat owner, is too late.
@stevenr8606

Hi great video's. A tip when you fit anodes aways check with an ohm's meter the anode to what ever it is protecting to check they are mated to each other properly. You should get a very low reading . Oxalic acid buy a tub on the Internet in powder form for £6-£7 ,it makes gallons much cheaper than starbright ready made in the chandlers,also good for rust stains. Keep the video's coming .

Nicely done guys, for what it’s worth the anode on the hull should have the fat end facing forwards, think of an airplane wing how its big at the front skinny at the back but it won’t affect how it works as an anode

ok a good wire connection to where? the boat hull is made of glass. Glass is a really good insulator. so its only the prop unti.and it has its own anode. all the rest are totally uselss unless to protect the 200 individual stainless fittings on the deck, and they dont need it.
@MiQBohlin
@MiQBohlin 3 жыл бұрын
@@merrickray I probably was a bit too fuzzy in my viking way of expressing… Anyone can via a multimeter measure if there is good conductivity from an anode to the desired object. Thereby check if it is a good enough connection. Eg: from the surface of the anode to a shaft/bearing/housing/etc. It is an easy way to make sure everything is spiffy _before_ splashing.

@@CadohaAdventures yes. I have that layer & after a couple of nights my mattress is damp on the underside, so I have to turn the mattress on its side. to air it during the day. I have heard that IKEA bed slats are a better solution.There is also a system of modular clip together plastic pieces that raise the mattress up 20mm or so, which is said to work well.
