Carving a home out of the forest is a great adventure. You are fully capable. My wife and I did the same 30 years ago (temperate forest). We're still comfortable in our off-the-grid home we built. Like a boat, upgrades have been made along the way. Congratulations on making the leap, and enjoy the projects.

Great! I retired at 51. Sailed for 4 years alone. Went to South America. Live in Venezuela 1 year, Peru 1+ years, bought two cabins in the Patagonia/Chile and lived off the grid for 4 years. No city water or Electric. Built a house in Buenos Aires. Still own.Bought house with 17 acres in San Rafael , Mendoza, Argentina and planted 3400 plums trees and 300 other types. Horse chickens , rabbits and 3 dogs. Also pigs. After 7 years I sold that and moved back to Florida where I started. Wrote a book call "UnSunk" Not floating and not sinking. OH! got married to beautiful Argentinian. Dove the Great Barrier reef where I was attacked by a small shark. Visited most countries in South America. Dated Miss Costa Rica in Costa Rica. I will be 78 next month. With all that water on your new land you can start a fish farm. Keep going. Don retired telephone man and a Veteran. So I think you are as normal as can be.

I'm now 65 years old. I've had a boat since I was 5. I've sailed all over Florida and on south into the Caribbean. I love my boat but I like my land, my house and the animals that I have. I still grow veggies. As for the boat, I still have one. When you start a family, you'll need to be on land. Take the kids out boating when they can swim. Good luck to you. Life goes by really fast!

As a relatively recent (just under 3 years) transplant from the great state of Texas to the great island paradise of northwestern Puerto Rico, I know why you did it. I will tell you contractors take island time to a whole new level. Taxes are a whole new issue if you build new vs remodel the original structure…that “great place for chickens” was the house that you will want to “remodel” or go through possibly years of getting permits to build new. Watch out while clearing that you don’t take down any of the protected trees…DRNA is rough! Congrats on the new journey, and bienvenidos a la isla!

You might think of getting OUTSIDE the US and its territories. You can find much more personal freedom. I never thought that my life would be on a tropical island in SE Asia. White sand beaches, a small farm and very friendly people. Very few permits and fast and cheap if ever.
@livingyourbestlife711 Жыл бұрын
There is a reason why people from PR leave (or want to) to the mainland. Yes, the environment is beautiful, the people are wonderful. On your boat you could do anything without permission, but now you will know what true beauracracy consists of in the "Land" of PR. To fix that chicken house you will need permission from the authority. To improve the property will require lots of paperwork. PR real estate is still under the civil law of Spain even as a US territory. There are many conservation preservation and easement restrictions, so make sure you know these limitations. People talk about the new owners no matter how far out you are and they'll come-a-knocking when they hear those hammers pounding. Read up on permitting in PR...it is a big deal - so it was since I left. Thanks for sharing!

As an engineer who created a dream home on a jungle lot I have some ideas. Use ICF for your walls. Insulation, pest resistance and hurricane strong, that’s the house you want. Add some steel trusses, a SIP roof deck and a steel roof, you’re ready for anything. Try ground sourced AC, a backup generator, solar panels to make yourselves self sufficient. Good luck!

My parents moved to the Caribbean in 1994 Isla Margarita, and we still have a house there. Every sailor that moves to land (Caribbean island) ends up sinking or selling their boats because there is no time for a home and sailboat. houses in the Caribbean take a lot of work to keep up. And about dogs, get yourself street dogs. They are the only ones that can hold up the environment, dogs with too much fair dead of heat. And also, note farming is easy. Make friends with the locals and learn from them. nothing more to say good luck looks like a perfect place for a infinite pool

The to do list for farming in PR. -Avocado trees -Squashes -Banana plants -Breadfruit trees -Lemon trees -Quenepa trees -Coffee plants -Sweet potatoes -Cassaba plants -Yautia plants -You can also grow grapes and wildberries. Won't recommend any mango trees closer to the house as the leaves are extremely toxic to other plant life and can damage your property. My parents had the misfortune to live right under a huge mango tree and we couldn'r grow grass, the rotten mangoes brought pests, and the concrete from the house degraded along with the foundation as the roots caused the terrain to shift and cracks started to appear in the walls, etc. No to mention the tree will try to suck any moisture from the soil so grass wouldn't even grow. You also have nice slopes so you can plant coffee plants along your property. You might wanna keep the iguanas off your if you want good and healthy crops growing there. The presence of nearby water might be a good indication your land is fertile due downstream flows carrying minerals and nutrients for plant life to grow. Get in touch with local farmers or neighbors if any that can give you advice. Usually farmers convene around ferias (funfair events, etc.) and "Plaza del Mercado" or bazaars which each town has one or several. Also, if you are planning to expand the house, make sure you have the right permits through ARPE or the DRNA along with environmental impact data maps, ground survey for integrity and to check for underground water which you can capitalize with a small privately owned well along with a water treatment system built in your place. Since can extract ground water (if such water exist), your water bill will be extremely cheap. In addition, a good septic or sewer system can work as you don't want to dump waste closer to the stream or the government can sue the owner of the property. Usually an arquitect or structural engineer can do this for you. The city might need to rebuild your running water system so check around the house for a "contador de agua" which is the meter usually covered with an iron cap that reads "Agua". The tap water might have been sealed off or closed all together as the home appear have been abandoned long along. Make sure to get in contact with the City Hall of the town you are moving to so their public work crews can assit you if needed to remove bulk debris, down trees affecting the property, etc. Make sure to document anything you do in the property for your records. Plenty of things to do around, and the local weather is perfect for growing crops all yearound. Have a good one guys and best of luck and good vibes for your next move.

Super exciting and I think you guys will thrive! I also think most of us will still be here to watch your adventures as we watch for the dynamic between you two, not the sailing alone. Since you wisely mentioned that we all have different levels of experience and education, and can learn from one another, I want to offer a few words of advice from my area of expertise - very carefully research the breed of every animal you add. For example, Highland cattle (the fuzzy face cows) do NOT do well in hot humid climates, nor do Clydesdales. This also applies to various chicken breeds, goat breeds, and dog breeds. Any brachycephalic (smoosh face) dog will struggle in those temperatures, with that humidity, and with any elevation. You also won’t want a heavy-coated breed of dog, but you will want one that works well as a livestock guardian. Also: NO FREE-ROAMING CATS. PR already has too many, and cats are extraordinarily damaging to native wildlife and ecosystems. They hunt and kill regardless of how much you feed them, wipe out native bird and reptile species, and spread toxoplasma gondii to endangered species and humans through their feces entering the soil and water sources. On island habitats they are absolutely devastating. Bear will be much happier in the home anyway, as pampered as she is. 😸❤️

Free roaming cats are an ecological catastrophe. Domestic cats are sport hunters who are foreign to the ecosystem.

Me and my pops started our garden with no experience it was 50x75, so not a farm but we grew everything you could think of and the first year had more than a family of 5 could live on. So not easy but definitely do able. Why would you hope it’s a joke that they try something new, that’s dumb and well rude.

Sailing is fun and I believe it taught you the importance of anchoring. Buying land takes anchoring to a different level. You send down roots and achieve stability. I hope you savour the sweetness of that aboard for many years to come. Congratulations on this and the wedding in offing! I enjoy your adventure videos plus the vibe and chemistry between you.

Congratulations and can't wait to se the farmer version. You should call it Farming GBU. I just went back and watched ep. 1 and it now has 90k watches so a lot of people have gone back to catch up. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Matt and Kristin, Thank you for allowing me to go along on your adventure. I can not begin to tell you how much happiness and laughter you have brought me over the years. I haven’t watched you guys in 4-5 months bc me and wifey bought a new home and I’ve been working like an animal. Very happy for you guys and excited for this new venture of your. I’ll definitely be watching more now to stay tuned into your progress. Heck , you now got me h to inking on doing the same and buying a beater land and starting from scratch. This property you picked out is bad ass, love the creek.

What at tremendous adventure you have ahead! Exciting times. Whenever you have the chance to buy land- do it! That's been my motto. One caveat- plan on fighting the jungle. It will NOT stop trying to take you over (in conjunction with the bugs) Plan well and it can be done. Can't wait to see what life brings for you. Whatever it is, the two of you will make the best of it.

My first reaction was sadness, since you're no longer sailing. I thought I wouldn't follow on, but you two are so good on camera, I can't wait to see what's next so I'm tagging along!

When you plan your sewer lines - think about potential multiple units- like if you can have spaces that can be stand-alone that you can rent. Maybe you make an 8x16 cabin first that you live in, while you build a bigger place, that you could rent on Airbnb later. Or a communal kitchen/bath, with multiple smaller cabins that you could rent in more of a hostel style scenario.

Sure was hoping you all would make an Earthship home! Earthquake resistant, and much better in harsh hurricane conditions. They have some designed and built in Florida. You can reuse materials and recycle in the same process! Total off grid living especially during power outages as needed too! I have to admit the journey is so worth it, and about time you all get married and have a wonderful family! Lots of love from us here on our itty bitty channel!

Bit parasocial but.... I was SO sad to see the (not clickbait) in the title. Having watched the video I'm still a bit sad but so happy to see how excited you guys are about it. A lot of my favourite vids were the boat work/refit ones, so if you decide to document your journey here I'm sure I'll love watching it. Best of luck in your new adventure!

I'm gonna say it straight, I'm bummed to see you leave sailing, you guys had it all figured out, starting from nothing to a boat that anyone would be proud to own. Apart from that I'm really happy you guys found your own slice of heaven and the proverbial slice of American Pie. Looking forward to your newest dream and seeing how you tackle the ups and down of home ownership. . Congratulations!

A roof and a little paint and you'll be in good shape. Throw up some solar panels, and you have electricity to keep the beer cold. It rains often in PR, so a water collection system will probably get you by. It's always easier said than done, but yall are not quitters. I'll keep tuning in to see the progress.

Congrats! I'll miss your boating adventures, but understand your logic. The wife and I did something similar in the Carolina's back in the '90's, building a place in the sticks. If I can offer a bit of advice, as much as you probably want to get started building 'something' right away... first take some time and lay out a basic set of goals, then add what you want your end product to be. And most importantly, don't minimize your end-result dreams, as you have no idea how profitable your adventures may become down the road. Believe me, as the years click by, upfront planning time will repay you guys many times over. Also aim to incorporate solar (and if possible geothermal) in your plans. As I'm sure you're aware hurricanes have the real potential to lay waste not only to property, but also utility systems, so having the ability to not only stay safe but also remain fully self-sufficient is key. Best of luck guys! I plan to stick with your channel.
