I don’t think that is totally correct. Without Peter’s commitment to undertake the Elcano Challenge along with a successful Kickstarter campaign we wouldn’t be seeing these build videos. And without Peter’s decision to commit to aluminium and originally build a Mumby there wouldn’t be this build. And if it wasn’t for Peter bringing Tim Mumby on board as a consultant Marko wouldn’t have designed such a boat. You may have also missed Peter’s involvement in the design process. Certainly David and Marlo’s involvement, along with David’s generosity and the factory’s expertise has taken this build to the next level. However to dismiss Peter’s contribution, along with all of his Kickstarter supporters backing is both disingenuous and ridiculous , and borders on disinformation and being malicious. With this apparent ill will towards Peter and HIS project I’m surprised you’re here.

Back in the 60's I changed (jobs) boats from steel to Aluminum, and immediately ran into the recurring problem with corrosion demands, had to start a tight scheduled routine, this is 2024 and there may be new products for preventive maintenance but back then I was working on electrolysis on EVERY non aluminum fitting every morning . The aluminum rope horns became brittle around 7 years in and were replaced. I hope things are different for you..........good luck

Bad things about aluminium: Aluminum is anode to most other metals, so it will corrode when it comes into contact with other metals. Saltwater environments are especially prone to corrosion, galvanic corrosion, electrolysis, and crevice corrosion. Painting: Applying an anti-fouling agent to aluminum is more difficult than with fiberglass, which can increase costs and make maintenance more difficult. If not applied correctly, aluminum can blister paint. Welding: If the weld is overheated, the alloy can crumble and degrade, which can lead to cracking or structural failure. Watch dropping a penny in the bilge.

You forgot fatigue: Aluminium does not like flexion or vibration at all and will fail very quickly.
@darrengoldsbrough1484
@darrengoldsbrough1484 7 ай бұрын
Typically 12 years before fatigue becomes a problem unless you have designed the fatigue out of the structure in your scantlings derivation. One other item is aluminium hulls are noisy, you hear every slap of water against the hull. No material is a perfect solution for designing and building boats, every material has it's pros and cons. Keep in mind with aluminium hulls (like steel, ply and foam sandwhich) the construction is very fast for the hulls because everything can be CNC cut and if designed correctly can be assembled like a 3D jigsaw puzzle. We designed and built a 12m Cat for the NSW Waterways Authority as a garbage clean up vessel for Sydney Harbour, the hulls were assembled and fully welded in 3 weeks. The hull construction is the fast and not so costly part of the build, where it slows down dramatically and the big money starts to be spent is in the systems installation and outfit phase. Also looking at the vessel I wonder if any watertight subdivision calcs have been performed? I know if Plucky had watertight subdivision in accordance with the classification societies it may have saved his previous Cat.

@@teeanahera8949 None of this is what ifs. Not every serious global cruiser is Aluminium. Grow up. Every material and design decision is a compromise. It's a question of which compromises you are happiest with. My own "global cruiser" whatever that is - is a composite hull and deck. That hasn't stopped me from doing 7-9000 miles every year from the sub antarctic to the tropical.

@@darrengoldsbrough1484 "12 years before fatigue becomes a problem" is based on what? Every panel has different stiffness and loads. Fatigue can be an issue very quickly in an inadequately stiffened panel subject to flexion.

Hey Plucky, have you looked into the All In One Hybrid Inverters, they can handle shore power, solar MPPT charging for charging your propulsion batteries, and the 240Vac will allow you to hook up a Victron 12 Volt 15amp Battery Charger for keeping your 12 Vdc house batteries in good order, all in one unit. I would recommend getting two, one port and one starboard to help with redundacy. That's the route I am going down but because my project is a 50' Off Grid power Motor Yacht I have 20 Solar Panels to deal with, I am also borrowing heavily from the EV Car Manufacturers for the 2 x 160 kW propulsion motors and 120 kW 350Vdc batteries, but that's my story and probably not very interesting for your sailing audience.

He bobs around at 3 knots because he is a hopelessly crap sailor. Nothing to do with the boat. I have been sailing around Fiji for the last two seasons at the same time as Barry with zero drama.

BTW I was replying to an ill considered comment by Teeanahara. To his credit Teeanahara has removed it. :o)

If I ever replace my Dufour 35 (very unlikely I ever will) I'm having the new boat built in Vietnam.

This build is going really fast. Guess that’s one advantage over fiberglass. Although the aluminum is more costly, construction time is a lot less. Less man hours? Fascinating project. 👍😎
