Been watching/following your travels since your first season on the little Catamaran, and I cannot help but smile seeing you so happy...even in the face of a hurricane...you two are living a dream right now, take in every moment of this part of your lives, extract every ounce of joy from every day that passes, and savor every sundowner. Trust me (and all the other older folks who probably also remind you constantly) that life goes by a lot faster than you can ever imagine. People dream of doing what you are doing when they retire, you two have found a way to do it when you are young. A very rare blessing indeed.

The first hurricane prep is harsh because you're not sure what to do. You'll learn. People in the Bahamas and Florida tie off from mangroves in canals. We in Guatemala will get a few rainy and grey days, lucky me and you!

Take care guys. Back in 2004 we were on holiday in Grenada and went through the eye of Hurricane Ivan. Part of the roof blew off our hotel and a lot of windows got smashed. Thousands of houses on the island were destroyed. Royal Navy came to our rescue to restore electricity and provide fresh water. We were eventually airlifted to Barbados :)

This hurricane season taught us to prepare for the big one no matter the forecast. We stayed at out dock for Hurricane Sally. Mistake. It was forecasted to pass on by to New Orleans. No one here prepared because of this...@ 2200 when the storm was not too far away we got the hurricane warning that in 24 hours we were going to be hit...@ 2300 my storm weather guy sent out an email saying that hurricane Sally lost her rudder and he has no idea where she will hit. We woke up @ 0600 to high winds...Less than 12 hours from the warning. I went out to check on our boat all was fine. The wind clocked to the only open water to her @ 75 kts gusting 100 kts and huge waves...This is a protected area except from the southwest. A piling on our dock broke. I was in a Doctors appointment so couldn't answer the emergency phone call...By the time I got there the neighbors had tied a line to her port aft quarter and got it around a tree. They saved her. She rubber on the leeward piling the rest of the storm. She is a 1978 Morgan OutIsland 41 and her hull is VERY thick. The only damage we sustained was the gel coat was rubbed off in a 3 inch area where the piling was rubbing her hull. The top of the piling is now shaped the angle of her hull. You did the right thing preparing for the worst. From that point forth we took her in to the bayou and tied her to the trees every storm forecast...I got tired of moving her and eventually just left her hurricane tied for the rest of hurricane season. Keep living the dream!

Enjoyed the episode, thanks for sharing with us! Hurricanes are a real pain...you guys did great! I've personally been through a dozen or so of the things, from category from 5 to category 1, and I stopped counting tropical storms a long time ago. The hardest part is 'the not knowing;' not knowing how to best plan, not knowing what the aftermath will necessitate, and so on. You plan the best you can, stay adaptable, and deal with the hand you're dealt. Of course, the best strategy is to avoid them altogether, but that seems to be getting increasingly difficult!

That's right, the recommendation is to sail at least 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela. But until now, with regard to the archipelago of los roques and the archipelago of Aves and leeward and windward, the incidence of acts of piracy has been minimal due to its location away from the coasts ... it is understandable that fear. As a Venezuelan, I feel ashamed that this country has become a refuge for criminals, a true hell ... A shame since Venezuela has beautiful coasts but insecurity has driven away the visitors who used to fill its coves ... Good luck boys god bless you

Dodging hurricanes involves so many variables that it is virtually impossible. Tried running from Irma and just accumulated a bunch of expenses, and ran into the path. If we had stayed put, we would have been in the least impacted area, just like those poor folks in Trinidad.

[1] It's now 21NOV2020 and both storms have passed. I hope you survived. [2] You shd not have been there in the Hurricane season! [3] Selling Skua is a panic response. Study British admiralty manual of seamanship to deal with such situations. Sometimes the high wind corridor is as narrow as 50nm . [4] You two have admirable gutz to survive unless you use flawed contingency planning. [5] NB: a marina can be a destructive place to seek shelter.
