I'm a long time fan. When Riley is traveling with his mates, take whatever risks you want. But, when you're with two beautiful women and your lovely children, stay out of red zones. This was a close call and a warning to not tempt fate again. I hope you take this seriously. I want to continue watching your KZbin channel and NOT see you on the news because of an incident. I was hesitant to post this, but I really care about what happens to you all. Enjoy the adventures and be safe.

My first thought, when you said there was a Mayday call while you were in a red zone, was : “It is a trap”. Given the “mayday boat” sailed towards you and then just broke off when it saw you, that is still my best guess. Clearly the Mayday makes no sense coming from a boat that was not in distress. So either it was pirates and you were not the payday they were looking for, or it may have been the coast guard, in disguise, trapping pirates. Glad you are all safe! Love the videos, especially the long format. Stay safe.

I did a bit of digging based on all the comments here, and the anti-piracy monitoring group in the Phillipines has recommended they reduce the alert-level from Moderate to Moderate-Low because there hasn't been an incident of kidnapping in those waters in 1.5+ years due to the combined efforts of Malaysia and the Phillipines watch-groups. Given that information, it was likely an undercover watch-group wondering why their AIS has been turned off and making sure Vagabone wasn't the pirate. A bit of reading up on the situation shows that it's less dangerous than likely thought. Which is fortunate for them!

I’d rather take my children, under my protection through a red zone (read the stats for where they’re at - way less than the risk of sending kids to school in the U.S.!) than play roulette with them at school and them growing up with the anxiety of active shooter drills (like my son just had today!) Long time fan here and am really glad you made it safely! What's an extra week of travel when the risk is the safety of your family and crew? There is nothing on this earth that should take precedent over the well-being of those in your charge, Riley. The risk is certainly not worth a few days shaved off on your passage. If you'd gone with option one, poor Forest might have been able to get medical care quicker. If that wasn't warning sign enough, perhaps losing communication in one of the more hostile and dangerous parts of the world was? You were incredibly lucky this time. I am left not knowing how I feel about this episode and the “risk” of the red zone. In one scene Elayna is supposedly crying and scared and flat said she didn’t want to go there and Riley was filming to show reality. Then Elayne shows the options and says they are taking the red zone. Was it all just acting and dramatic effect? Was it not actually dangerous? Would Riley REALLY put his family in danger? Would Riley REALLY risk being boarded and the horrors that could have taken place, especially to Elayne? I’m struggling to believe he would. But all the comments say the danger was real. If the dangers and risks were real, then shame on them all for choosing the red zone. I am all for getting off the couch and living a full adventurous life but there is a line with just plain stupid on the wrong side of it.

All the comments saying the danger is real are talking out their arse. Several years ago the area was problematic because of piracy and terrorism from the Abu Sayyaf Group, this threat has been seriously downgraded each year since the 2020 as there was a crackdown on the Sulu and Celebes seas. Nothing in these waters is ever "safe" but they definately played it up a bit and all the people in the comments took the bait..."oooo RED ZONE!". No.

I’m confused. At the start of the video, you put together a montage of news videos reporting on the numerous attacks in and around the area. Then a clip of Elayna apparently so anxious about the area she’s in tears. Then fast forward to Elayna casually stating that of the 3 possible options, you decide to go through the red zone. Now either, you were just hyping up the danger so that we’d think - wow isn’t Riley such a brave, macho muscle man. OR - you really were just being incredibly stupid? If neither of these is true, I’d love you hear your side of this, as it’s generating such a huge number of pretty strong comments (which I guess was the intention) Cheap tactics and unnecessary given the number of subscribers you have. Think maybe it’s all going to your heads a bit?

This was extremely risky behaviour and hugely negligent. The story reminds me of Richard Philips, the captain who ignored piracy warnings and was a well seasoned captain on dangerous routes and he's ship was hijacked and he was taken hostage by the pirates. Some serious indications of reckless endangerment of children and you can get prosecuted for that. Failure to Heed Warnings: By disregarding maritime warnings indicating the presence of piracy threats in the area and choosing to sail into the red no-go zone, you are knowingly putting the safety and well-being of your family, including your young children, at risk. Lack of Communication Preparation: The failure to ensure proper communication equipment and procedures before embarking on the journey demonstrates a lack of due diligence and responsibility in ensuring the safety of all onboard, particularly the children who are dependent on you for protection. Neglect of Duty of Care: As the captain of the vessel and the responsible adult for the safety of your family and crew, you have a duty of care to take reasonable precautions to avoid foreseeable risks and hazards. Your decision to sail into a known dangerous area without adequate preparation or consideration for the safety implications constitutes a failure to fulfill your duty of care. Potential Consequences: Sailing into a red no-go area with piracy threats increases the likelihood of encountering dangerous situations, including potential piracy attacks or other maritime emergencies. The presence of children onboard further exacerbates the risks, as they may be more vulnerable and less able to respond to or escape from dangerous situations.

As someone who lived in this area for a year, I can confirm that you took a real risk sailing through the red zone. This part of the Philippines is classified as a red zone for good reason. There’s a fine line between calculated risks and recklessness. As a foreigner, the only reason I could stay there was due to the protection provided by a very wealthy and powerful family who ensured my security. Even with such protection, it was still risky, and I had to take extra precautions. Without that type of local support, you truly put yourself and your family in danger. There’s a very good reason why foreigners avoid this area, and even many Filipinos are reluctant to travel there despite how beautiful this area is. You were very lucky nothing happened to you. Luck or chance are not Risk Elimination or Mitigation processes. More luck does not equal less risk. 3. A Riley Risk Assessment process is straight out of The Little Book of Riley Shortcuts. 4. You are not a Captain, at best you are a competent Skipper and at worst sometimes a Gilligan. A Captain has studied and trained for many years and follows Rules and Procedures not whims. So Little Buddy, go get Mary Ann and the other castaways and spend some time apologising, then sit in the corner, take a big breath and repeat over and over, "l am not a Captain, l am not a Captain, l am not a Capt...." until you pass out. And even if they had comm, VHS isn't going to do much good, and who are you going to call anyhow? 3) No one would have been able to protect them in a hostile (i.e., guns) situation. 4) I think the point of what Reilly said was that he WAS taking Elayna seriously and valuing her input. 5) I think they did just that, no? Not saying you're wrong, but I interpreted things differently. BTW, I'm surprised they don't carry a Garmin InReach as does Wind Hippie does (and I do while grouse hunting out of cell coverage).

I've never been so locked into an vlog like this. A true appreciation of feelings are exposed and delivered. Amazing. To see Lenny's joy of learning and getting something spot on is tremendous.

It’s unbelievable the risks they put others and their kids through. The “it will never happen to me” attitude is great until it does happen to you. Speaking from experience here. Seven days to take the slow safe route seems like the only option worth considering.

Some might say the same about off grid living in Idaho. You would think one adventurer would respect another. You have no idea of their security precautions. They get more life in before noon than many of us do in a year. I think they discussed among each other and made the right decision for themselves and since we're seeing the video it would appear that they somehow made it through the red zone where one piracy event has been recorded since 2020. How a viewer thousands of miles thinks they know best is beyond me.

@JEB Your comparing the risk they just took, ignoring warnings to save a little time essentially, with the horrific things these pirates do to people. Women in front of their partners and the lives their kids would have if taken in the hands of monsters to Off grid living in Idaho?…

@@Rebeka1589 there has been far more murders and car accidents in any state than piracy in that sea in the past 4 years if you care to look. Forrest was sick and likely had a timeline to keep for his own plans. Not so easy add a week to travel when international plans are involved. Everyone acting as if the evil men are just waiting to pounce on anyone who crosses an imaginary red line is a bit silly. They discussed it, they made a plan, they love their family and they made their choice.

@@JEB.. Have you ever been on a boat? Most countries do not allow weapons (no guns). Some countries make you even turn in your spear fishing equipment and you can get it when you check out of the country. The build of the boat is flimsy, the "doors" are very easily opened. So, a homesteader in Idaho probably has multiple guns for protection, along with dogs to warn approaching dangers. They are completely vulnerable to dangers and if their boat becomes damaged or unable to sail or motor, they are stuck in a dangerous area. You cannot compare the safety of a home verses a boat.

People in the comments are trying to say something without actually saying it. I'll say it. IT'S ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING to risk your wife being raped by pirates just to save a few days of sailing. Pathetic! You guys did a video where Riley was traumatized by a monkey biting him while protecting his territory, yet Riley is willing to risk Elayna's life? I know he thinks that sailing through pirate waters makes him look tough and brave but it actually makes him look narcissistic and extremely selfish.

You are absolutly right and thank you for your honesty. BUT: Elayna is a grown woman and what I, a mother and grandmother, haven't understood is: Why didn't she leave the boat with her two boys and let Riley go on alone? I would never have given in in this journey and would have left the boat together with my kids. Perhaps then Riley would have understood the importance of the issue. I'm still angry about him, sorry.

To be honest I can't believe your somewhat lackadaisical attitude to personal safety. Surely you are aware that where you are is NOT a recommended area to take your family into, to say the least. I've lived in that area, from Singapore to Borneo (Brunei/Sarawak/Sabah) to the Philippines, for several years. Watching your sojourn into Palawan waters, I've been fretting, "where the hell does Riley think he is going?" This is NOT an area where you take chances with the safety of your family, especially not when Elayna is obviously "feeling" it. Which is what you are doing. GET OUT OF THERE. Sorry.

Those potential attackers come from such a different world, unless you live there you have no idea about their aggression. They have nothing to lose and in their eyes all foreigners are extremely wealthy. Mob or mayday is often used by fishermen on island to guide their ships into the mangrove. You’ll find it all over Indonesia and Malaysia. It’s tricky in a no go zone. Best to stay away.

This was not a mistake. Not locking the anchor was a mistake (even that was due to negligence and apparent arrogance, really) - going into such an area, knowing, as they described, how dangerous it is, with two little kids, to save 7 to 10 days of sailing - that's not a mistake. That is child endangerment. Whatever I thought this guy could teach me - I feel sick after watching this video. And let's not let his wife, the mother of those kids, off the hook - she could have said no. She could have refused to follow her asshole husband into this insane risk - but she didn't. All in going by on this is what they chose to show in the video - so based on that - they both put those kids at risk of life totally unnecessarily. This wasn't "just" the already higher risk of them sailing - this was all that PLUS walking into a well marked mine field with those two kids in their hands - to hell with these two.

Yes, men and women do experience a different reality facing the world. Females begin to understand at some point that there are predatory men out there that sends us into high alert and we learn to listen to our instincts, stop being nice and brushing off our senses with self doubt and self judgements like, "oh you're just being prejudice" or whatever. We learn discernment and discretion to keep ourselves and our children safe from harm. Having these conversations with the men in our lives who love us and haven't seen or noticed the predatory looks or stalking behaviors is vital.

I would never take my family into a known red zone. The danger is not worth any time saved . The reported horrors that have happened to others should be enough to keep anyone away from there.

Darwin i got a kick out of today! 1. Chewing the bite of fish he said he wanted to eat and the excitable & happy smile that he was sporting! 2. Darwin communicating with dolphins and he could Actually mimick how they really do sound! Id say those dolphins and Darwin understood his feeling by his dolphin call. I always enjoy the boys. They are learning as they go

Up and down adventures that's for sure. Hope Forest recovered. Darwin looked so big taking that nap and they both are just so fun. Hugs to you all. XO, Kelly

If you are gambling and find yourself at a pokier table, and you haven't identified who is the fish, guess what? It's you. 8 Signs you are the fish out of water. 1) you have damaged your own hull. 2) You are without comms 3)Your crew is sick 4)The military tells you "you're an idiot" 5) You are voluntarily sailing into the middle of a pirate red zone 7)You can't identify your kill 8)You're complaining about bad luck.
