How to collect fresh water on a boat?

We do almost exactly as you guys by collecting water off the deck. But the difference is we just use a towel rolled up. No weights needed. Tea strainer is also a good idea. We use a very fine mesh Jabsco screen filter that fits perfectly in our fill. The Jabsco screen is also used before our fresh water pumps onboard. Deck collection is the best because quite often rain comes with wind. No worries about the rain collector flapping around Cheers Jacaranda

with the tea strainer you could mount it inside your funnel upside down then hot glue it to offer your filter inside, then it would be easier to clean! If you also have binder clips for the sail they will hold better than the clothes pegs and you would only need one! Love your videos.. My wife and I are almost on the edge of selling everything and getting a sailboat... But I think she would miss the garden!

Nick, sailing Uma cam up with a great way as they have scuppers that go into a pipe that runs to a water line discharge so the top sides stay clean. They taped into that and feed via filters into their tank , a simple ball valve to redirect . Cheers Warren

We have a Leopard 45 cat with a HUGE roof. Was wondering quite a lot of how to use that and you answer the salt question in the comments, thanx. We do have a DC water maker and a lot of lithiums, but I think it is a good idea to be in the habit of collecting rain water for when things break

Rain water is not as pure as you think. You may recall the issues in the UK after chernobyl disaster where parts of the peak district were contaminated and still are by toxic rain. You can filter out particulates but, chemicals and other nasties remain. the contents of rain water may come from thousands of miles away...... There is a guy in the sailing KZbin community that is a specialist in this field and has done a good video, its called something like surviving a ship wreck. (cant find it right now) suggest you take a look? Ant & Cid

How long do you let the rain come down before you start collecting it? I assume you let some rinse the bird poo and dirt before you start collecting it?

I can't answer for these guys, but as a former owner of two restaurants, I can tell you that FL health dept says you need 1 tsp of bleach per 5 gallons of water. It's enough to kill off anything in the water but no where near enough to cause any sort of corrosion or health problems.

Go to a chemist and buy waterpurification tablets, read instructions carefully and put them in your tanks periodically.

Only issue is you are taking in water that goes over deck, where u have walked on. And there's other stuff on the deck too prob so its not clean. Why not just make some plastic thing that funnels the water to the filter, seems it wld be cleaner
