Lesson learned on the anchor and windless? Breaker off and anchor lashed to the roller or fore deck so it can't deploy.

Ron, you have a very good point, that Rick also has acknowledged.
@charlesharper23573 жыл бұрын
Obviously Rick has been anchored up for too long and lost his sea legs. I used to be a commercial fisherman, and after being tied up for the winter always looked at the first few days off shore at the start of each season with a mixture of anticipation and the dread of what might go wrong. It's amazing what you forget, and how little things you overlooked will bite you on the butt until you've gotten your sea legs back.
@roncanizares99663 жыл бұрын
The Sailing Doodles guy lost his boat when the anchor can off the bow and fouled the prop a full speed. The damage was so great that the boat was essentially a write-off. So always secure the anchor with more than just the windless gypsy. As the old saying goes: "If you have both a belt and suspenders, your pants will surely stay up".
@realulli3 жыл бұрын
@@roncanizares9966 I recently watched a video from Tristan, the captain of Super Yacht AWOL. They had been in a Mediterranean Mooring and after they picked up their anchor, they secured it: * with the windlass * with the windlass drum brake (engaged manually) * with a "devil's claw", basically a hook that hooks around the chain and gets attached to something to hold it. Talk about belt and suspenders. ;-) Tristan's channel is "Superyacht Captain"

I'd be writing "note to self, place covers over switches ) so, when using as an equipment storage locker, the switches won't be triggered out at sea or anywhere else for that matter. Not sure a bunch of people realize this is one of the most clogged shipping areas in the world, with tons of tankers in a row ready to get into the canal, and others anchored so that they can get ready. One channel I was watching when I first started watching KZbin Cruising Channels ha spent years rebuilding her aluminum boat called Karl at Shelter bay. Very accommodating place.

You'll want to contact your electronics MFG to let them know you'll be using DC Arc Welding on your boat on that steering repair and ask them what precautions you'll need to take to ensure your GIZMOS do not suffer if you have a Stray Neutral Ground or near your insulated wiring. Amp Bleeds can kill or Fuzz digital electronics. My 300 ampere DC Welder can upset a Human's Pacemaker at 40ft in most conditions. Just a thought.

The Lady is back where she belongs and it's a good thing because she was starting to grow toenails! Looks like even Tiki has figured out you're not turning back this time, she has her sailors eyes on the horizon. It appears three hour test sails won't reveal what five hours in open sea will, aparantly it requires big rolling waves to find loose rudder or anchor parts.

So, I'm not going to mention any names on who is at fault for the broom handle incident.... it still boils down to the Captain of the vessel.. Do your job Captain. Give these people a safe passage. Do it. Don't blame it ...

That’s one perspective… personally, I feel having people take accountability provides learning experiences. Not guilt trips or reaming out, but a situation for the sailor to improve. If the captain just fills in all the spots crew fall short, they’ll never know what they did poorly and will never know they need to hone their skills. Rick seems like a very seasoned, fair captain (only because I don’t know him personally).

After seeing your quadrant bounce, I'm getting more and more happy with my own rudder mount. Heavy tube glassed in to the bottom of the boat (with crossbraces and reinforcements), goes up to an absolute unit of a wood block, passes through that partially, with another big metal tube with a massive flange screwed down on top of that, then bolted into the wood, with the rudder being held by a collar riding on top of the tube/flange, and the quadrant bolting on with a key on top of that. But, y'all did well handsteering - must've been a pain but I guess you get to suffer a little first, and then comes all the pleasure :D
