Ben with regards to your through hull for the engine pick up DO NOT HAVE OPENING FACING AFT😮😮😮😮, the opening MUST be facing forward, the reason for this is if you have the opening facing aft as the vessel moves forward it can cause a vortex around the opening resulting in the pump loosing suction resulting in overheating and destroying your engine. I have seen this on numerous occasions during my 45 years of marine engineering.
@danagovang252010 ай бұрын
The manufacturers want them facing forward. Below 5 knots it doesn't make much difference, but at speed the aft facing orientation will cause a venturi that pulls against the pump. I've installed these facing forward and never had a problem.
@MrStratofish10 ай бұрын
I was wondering if that might be an issue but wasn't sure if it was only at higher speeds than Yabá could go at. I have no experience however :) The water would have to go past, then reverse it's flow at an equal speed to the boat in order to fill in the space. Then extra on top if it is being pumped in as well. Low pressure can do a bit to pull in water but it might be asking too much

If you plan to go with all chain anchor rode, check out Barry's 'Adventures of an Old Seadog', his last video dealt with setting up an emergency quick disconnect for the chain. You basically tie off the end of the chain, about a foot from the bitter end, to an eye bolt with rope, and then use a Stainless Carabiner to hook the very end to the same eye bolt. Then, if the rope fails during normal use, you won't lose the chain overboard. But if you have to move quickly and the anchor is fouled on the bottom, you can undo the carabiner and cut the rope. I'd keep a float with 20 or 30 meters of line attached to it in the locker so you can hook it to the chain outboard of the hull before cutting the rope and can return to retrieve your ground tackle. Also, mount a knife close to the eye bolt so it's always handy for use...

Re skin fitting you are unwise to turn it around facing backwards. I had one on my Rassy 49 and discovered that at speed you find water not coming in. Reason is the flow of water around the solid front end caused a airlock on the other side thus restricting water being sucked into the boat. My answer was to get angle grinder and cut a couple of groves into the solid bit to break any airlock that would form
@edwinharvie617410 ай бұрын
Yes! Propulsion engine intakes always need the”scoop” pointing forward, maximizing inlet pressure. If you’re under sail at speed and start the engine, a stern facing scoop risks low pressure at the intake. (Note that genset raw water intakes typically use flush fittings to avoid forcing water up through the exhaust when underway without the genset running, so you slow or stop before starting it.) Hate to see you have cooling issues with that beautiful Mercedes MP worked so hard on.

Hi Ben and MP. If I recall correctly, in a past video you thought about doing a counterweight to the folding staircase to make it easyer to lift. I think that is one of the task to acomplish before splah day because you will be working more steadier on ground than in water. The other thing I suggested in previous videos are: change the opening of those emergency hatches: inbounds would be safer; and: re-place the steel plate wicht holds the propeller shaft to the back of the booklets, so all the force the engine-propeller assembly produces will go to the structure of the hull instead of just 4 bolts and the plate. Both items are important: having a proper safety hatchet opening will evantually save your lives; and changing the location of the plate will reduce significantly the stress to the engine. As far of the underwater light, I think it will be not only helpfull if diving by night, but also a nice personal signature to Yabá: imagine docking in port by night with all the lights on: COOL! As always, cheers from NE PAtagonia, Argentina.

You still need bilge gas sniffer & bilge blower / extractor fans. Plus yes you need a copper lightning conductor down to your steel plates on the stern keel. In your wiring system you hull (the metal part underwater) is always the earth / ground to protect yourself and friends / passengers from electrocution. Does your system have RCD (Residual Current Detector) trip switches?
@ianmoone235910 ай бұрын
@@robertsawa3407 Not quite. I hear what you’re saying, however, many boats / yachts have been blown up with leaking LPG (Propane) cylinder fittings for cooking stovetop or cooker tap left on & wind blows the flame out & no one noticed. LPG is heavier than air and sinks to the bilge & accumulates down there. The float switch on the bilge pump would be enough to ignite the LPG Propane if water ingress or diesel spillage, freshwater tank leak was enough to raise the bilge pump float switch automatically, since the bilge pumps are wired direct to battery’s bypassing the battery isolation switches. Also presumably they will have a tender vessel of some kind most likely outboard powered - so you assume they will be carrying gasoline / 2 stroke mix maybe depending on their outboard - so there’s just as much risk as if they had a gasoline powered engine & fuel tank. Commercial 100 Tonne Master, I’ve forgotten more about these sort of safety issues aboard than most know. Sadly pretty much every suggestion I’ve made have been totally ignore by this couple so I stopped bothering to make suggestions, as they mistakenly believe they know what is and isn’t needed and often in life, it’s what we don’t know that gets us killed. The biggest single risk to anyone aboard a timber vessel at sea is fire. No fire alarms anywhere in the vessel or fire extinguishers sufficient to extinguish a diesel fire in the engine room for eg. Then there’s the total disregard of safety with the lithium ion phosphate battery bank. The recent RORO (Roll On Roll Off) Car Ferry disaster off Norway Sweden has lead to new commercial vessel rules about lithium batteries aboard. What has been found after that disaster is that in the case of lithium battery fires is that the ONLY way they can be extinguished at sea, is by flooding the battery compartment with chilled brine solution. This does two things. 1. It drops the thermal runaway fire trigger point below that critical figure. In the case of these lithium phosphate ion battery’s that are on this particular vessel, the thermal runaway trigger temperature is 120 degrees C. On a hot day of day 45C and you have solar panels feeding in maximum amps in full sun it is possible to reach 120C in the wrong circumstances. 2. The chilled brine flooding - being an electrolyte - short circuits the lithium ion phosphate battery cells discharging them. It’s the stored energy that feeds the thermal runaway event & makes the fire continue to re-ignite. By discharging the cells with brine you remove the energy (fuel) from the triangle of combustion. Lithium ion fires cannot be smothered (deprived of oxygen) because this specific type of battery fire actually generates its own oxygen. Quite literally in freshwater a lithium ion battery fire will burn underwater for this reason. So the new rules for commercial vessels for lithium batteries aboard is that they must be contained within a metal water proof box, that has a 2 inch “filler pipe” with fire fighting quick coupler attached that on board fire suppression efforts can connect the brine to flood the sealed compartment. This vessels battery set up doesn’t have any such built in containment system to allow the flooding of the battery bank with sea water to stop a thermal runaway event. It would have been quite easy to build one in when installing the batteries, but if you’re not aware of the danger & the best cures for that risk - then the idea never occurs & shortcuts are taken that one day could cost everyone aboard their lives. Yes there’s a lot of bilge pumps aboard and that’s good however every one relies upon a functioning electrical system to save the vessel if it’s flooding. There’s not even one redundant back up system like a manual bilge pump that can be operated from up on deck for eg. A clutch operated mechanical bilge pump operated off the main engine could shift 10 times the volume that all those electrical bilge pumps can move. I could go on and on, but what’s the point? They are in a hurry to launch and so many safety issues have been overlooked that I’d be here for weeks pointing out the shortcomings. There’s no water proof forward collision bulkhead for eg. Not knocking these kids for their 3 years work and expenditure and so on. They have done a great job this far but really they should wait another year and do everything properly with proper advice from professional mariners & a naval architect. There’s no guarantee this boat won’t turn turtle at launch and sink because all the stability criteria of the original vessel have been substantially altered. Will it sit on its lines? Will it pass a standard incline stability test and retain more than 1/8th of its beam in clear freeboard with all passenger component against the same gunnel at the same time? There’s a lot of unknowns here many of which if done wrong can result in the loss of the vessel & lives in the wrong circumstances / conditions / sea state. Anyone see an Epirb aboard? Nope, me either. And so it goes. You can’t put an old wise head on a youngster. Neither of these two kids have the experience or knowledge to be restoring a vessel of this size much less skippering it. It reminds me a little of that idiot millionaire built his own mini sub to take tourists down to look at the Titanic wreck & it imploded under the water pressure killing everyone aboard. What these two kids aren’t understanding is that in the event that just one “Patreon” supporter gets seriously injured or dies & they get sued, it will come out that the passengers actually “paid for their passage” by virtue of the fact that, money changed hands and because of the “Patreon” support, they have effectively become “paying passengers”. The implications (even in 3rd world Brazil, will mean that it will be determined that an “illegal paying charter” took place in an un-surveyed “recreational vessel” skippered by a non commercial qualified captain, and it will end up they lose everything. If a coroner determines that as a result a negligent homicide occurred then one or both these owners could end up doing jail time. Their inexperience and lack of qualification saw them buy this worm infested vessel that was clearly on the verge of sinking. The encouragement of Odd Life Crafting Duca & Roberta, they have been convinced to restore this vessel for 3 years, in order to do what Duca did (& got away with) in running “illegal charters” in an unsurveyed recreational vessel. At least in Ducas case at my suggestion he went and studied and passed his commercial skippers license. He was half illegal in that he was qualified but his vessel wasn’t in commercial passenger carrying survey. Maybe Duca & Roberta got away with it because nothing went wrong and no one died & presumably no one complained to the Brazilian maritime authorities, about conducting illegal charters. But will Pete & MP be similarly as lucky? Only time will tell.

@@williamhenry8277All electric sounds good in theory but not so much in practice. When there’s insufficient sun for a week, batteries are low, they will have to run the diesel engine for the alternator to charge the batteries to cook. 🙄 As I said before no redundant / back up systems. 🙄
