I had straight A's in school. I took every math and science class there was available to me. I was planning university education but couldn't afford it. Turns out- that wasn't a bad thing. I missed out on 5 years of student loans and instead earned a living for those years. That put me 10 years ahead of my friends who came out of university and ended up working next to me in some cases because the couldn't get work in their chosen field. So, yeah Keith. Teach your kids to work hard and to look for the opportunities. Be flexible! Your boys have talent. That's clear. Anna is already taking charge. Kate is going to be another star.

I know exactly what Keith means. My brother went to college got his bachelors and masters. I joined the Army right out of high school, over time became a warrant officer and got involved in Risk Management. Without spending $1 on “higher education” I easily make upwards of 5 times my brothers annual income. In fact I subsidize him with a annual housing allowance so he doesn’t have to live paycheck to paycheck. Keep doing what you do Keith

I also grew up in the gun business so I also ran a gun store for the last several years before retirement. Now my grown daughters work for themselves (3 of 4). @@King_WhiteWolf I was a tradie. Roof plumbing was my game. Made it my business to become the best that I could be. Thus, I never competed in the market place. I became a price setter rather than a price maker. Became known for solving seemingly intractable problems. Leveraged my income into property. Ended up with a large industrial complex which underpinned my business. Now those rents support me and my endeavours. Not that hard. If I can do it then anyone can.

@@philbox4566 Hi Phil I wanted to sincerely thank you very much for responding! Your answer helps a lot, as it adds affirmation to my belief that property has very real potential as a vehicle to building a foundation of wealth. I don't by any means view it as an easy way to get rich (I think that mentality is a total pipe dream), but as being something I can legitimately understand and something I can get my foot in the door of. Your mention of the trades also is very relevant to me, and I wondered if you might entertain another question? For context, I actually originally wanted to build the base of funds necessary to get into property by way of the trades. However I am somewhat restricted in what I can do physically because of heart valve issues which have so far required three open heart surgeries to correct (I'm 33 if it matters). This limits my ability to do physical labor, but not entirely. My question is, given your experience in such trades, do you believe one with limits on physical exertion can still prosper in traditional trade labors, so long as he aspires for excellence in his work? I have doubted myself due to these limitations, hence the question. Again, thank you for your time!
@philbox45662 жыл бұрын
@@King_WhiteWolf As far as tradesman type work goes. Working smarter always pays far more dividends than working harder. For someone with limited physical capabilities I'd think that that type of person should pursue a more technical type trade, think IT hardware.

Grades don’t necessarily show that you know what you need to, only that you can jump through someone else hoops the way they want you to. Grades also don’t determine your character, work ethic or even how smart you really are and in most cases, your grades only matter in school. After that when you graduate, they don’t matter. Your job isn’t going to care what you got for a GPA, only that you got your degree and anyone can do so by doing the bare minimum to graduate if they wanted to.

After working for other people for a few years I bought a boat and started running fishing and diving charters, that lead to writing articles for magazines and gaining publicity for the business, TV and videos followed that, this was all before KZbin and social media . We then started a fishing tackle business, designing our own unique products made for good profits. It took long days and plenty of risks to get the rewards. Now we are happily retired in Western Australia and living the life. I’ve commented before but I would like you to know that you, your family, and your videos, have inspired me to change my lifestyle so I can save faster to chase the freedom and lifestyle you have shared. The water has always called me. Cliche I know but it’s true. One day we will see you out there. Keep up the great shows and thanks for sharing your realized dreams with us all!

Great video Kieth and Renee, love to see our son with your boys at the boat show! We wish our other son could have been there, but you know what happens when they grow up. Love the common sense, that ain't that common, if you don't teach your kids, someone else will and you may not like the results.

I think it’s important to note that Sailing Zatara was self funded and never depended on others to be successful. All too often people start these channels without any money thinking they can survive off of producing videos. From day one they start their Patreon page. Really? I take my hat off to Keith for waiting until he was financially stable before he set sail. And for Renee, you are now the money maker with your editing skills. At the end of the day, it’s all about the editing! Great job!

This video is amazing and so useful, I always see people on sailing channels asking HOW CAN YOU AFFORD THAT?! Perfect video for that here! I always see younger people commenting on here as well asking how can they save up and get started, so I thought I would just chime in. Right out of high school no less than a month after graduating I was set on sailing around the world, that’s all I wanted to do. I wanted to travel. I took all the required sea courses to work on a super yacht, I spent 3 weeks doing that. After that I went to the local marina in Fort Lauderdale looking for day work on a yacht to get my foot in the door, this helps tremendously. 18 years old I landed my first job that same day ( obviously not everyone will get that lucky but being in the yachting industry I will tell you every yacht is always looking for new crew!) I landed my job on the yacht, less than 2 months out of high school I was working as a deckhand on a yacht making almost $6,000/month while we were literally traveling the world. I was easily able to save this money up as working on a yacht, the owner pays for literally EVERYTHING. Nothing comes out of your pocket while you’re there! Sorry for the long explanation but this is just to help those get an idea of one way to get your foot into the ocean life. After saving up almost $150k by the time I was 21 from working on this yacht, now 25 I have been able to sail around the world comfortably, literally going anywhere my mind takes me.

You are 100 percent correct when saying the only reason to be in the oil and gas business is the money! Same here can’t wait to be done and do something I dream about! Almost there!! Love your videos 👍

Hello Z family. My wife and I have really enjoyed watching your Sailing Zatara videos. We also have teenagers and I own a business with a high school education. You guys are spot on with how you teach your kids to seize opportunities and give them the life skills and choice to choose their own path. We use the same philosophy here at home in Virginia with our kids. Be safe out there, keep the white side up and wind in the sails. We can’t wait for the next video! 🤟

You just changed my ways. My son is going to be thanking you for that rant. I believe that I have a different perspective on how to help my son be successful. It seems to make sense for him and it's worth a try. Thank you.

Totally agree with you on educating your kids in an un-traditional way. I think in the end they will have much greater life experiences and learn how to truly be independant. Great episode guys!

As far as my experience goes (and I have 7-years of education after high school), is this: . A students work for the C students. The B students work for the Government and the D students own the companies that the A & C students work for. . After 4-years at "my job" I resigned and started my own company. Never looked back. . Great counsel, Keith !!

Very interesting, I agree, many people put too much emphasis strictly on education and as many have found out our universities are lacking the couple of decades.

I share your sentiment regarding income. I press my kids to do well in school, but I emphasize the goal is to learn how to learn quickly, prioritize, and get along with others. I want them to have a fallback income but the priority is to carve their own path.
