Hey guys! I feel your frustration! Today myself and eleven of my fellow crew mates started a two week quarantine in a hotel in Vung Tau, Vietnam. We’re here to collect a brand new ship (Built here) and deliver her down to Cairns. Due to Manning requirements, we cannot de-man the ship when we arrive alongside in Cairns, but must enter another 14 days quarantine (Ashore) and the vessel must also be deep-cleaned before the next crew arrives onboard. I do not understand why we can’t simply stay onboard on anchor for the quarantine period and do the deep clean ourselves, so we have absolutely no idea what is going to happen when we get home....
@hughdickson48164 жыл бұрын
Because how would they ensure that you were honest and stayed on board? Why do you think people have to go to a hotel and be locked in their rooms? The only difference between quarantine on a boat and at home is that the boat is a dinghy ride or a swim away from the shore, as opposed to a front door away. The better argument is why, if you journey took longer than 14 days, do you need to quarantine at all - but again, how do they know that you didn't put ashore somewhere? Sure you an Sailing Zatara are completely honest and law abiding people, but some people are not - look at New Zealands experience with people breaching quarantine.

It's easy to think so, but hotel quarantine is different to isolation. If it were the same, we could isolate at home.
@Simon-cx5fc4 жыл бұрын
@Michael Harris So firstly, they were out for 10 days, not two weeks. Secondly, there's six(?) of them and bugger all social distancing, meaning, one person getting COVID could take a could of days to become mildly symptomatic, pass it on, a couple of day for the next person etc., meaning after 10 days, people could be infected and be so mildly symptomatic, or asymptomatic and not know it. This is avoided in quarantine, because they test people during their stay for that very reason. Thirdly, the Queensland govt are being asked to take their word for it. For all the govt knows, they met up with people en route in the ocean and got it at day 8, turned up before they're symptomatic and then spread it through the community, causing another lockdown. We know that simply asking people to do the right thing in quarantine doesn't work very well. Fourthly- and this is the most important one- as far as I'm aware, not a single person on this thread saying it's dumb to make them quarantine is a qualified epidemiologist, working in a team planning quarantine programmes. Neither am I- I'm making an educated guess, however, the medical professionals designing the quarantine programme might have entirely different reasons which I would defer to rather than baselessly dispute. Whether you know it or not, the stupidest shit you've read on this thread is actually a bunch of sailing enthusiasts somehow thinking they're more knowledgeable and better equipped than scientists and doctors who have spent their lives working to the top of their fields because said sailing enthusiasts think they have "common sense". You wouldn't take serious sailing advice on rounding cape horn from someone who doesn't sail, so why would you take quarantine advice in the middle of a global pandemic from people who aren't epidemiologists?

nope - and please don't think I agree with sea time not counting for quarantine either. The whole point of this quarantine has been to keep the disease contained, just like any number of other diseases in the past. Just there aren't the permanent quarantine places of sufficient size to cope with this one properly like there seem not to be in other countries either. That these hotels are largely vacant as travel has pretty much stopped makes them prime candidates to be quarantine places instead. Might be that people confined there should not be paying but that's another issue - containment is the main one and it must be done properly too. Great example here is that, in Victoria, where the state government oversaw the complete botching of hotel quarantine, the disease effectively escaped and killed a huge proportion of the roughly 900 people who have died of coven in Australia while nothing like that happened in the other states where the program was run much better. Effective quarantine works, pure and simple. Just doing to properly is not a trivial and cheap task.

Sorry, guys, but there's a whole bunch of bullshit going on in this video, and the comments below. Keith, and plenty of commenters, are trying to make the point that they should be credited for their 10 days at sea, and thus only have to do 4 days quarantine. Keith's explanation for that is that he has his AIS track, but that's patently absurd - that shows where the boat has been, but does not demonstrate that there could have been no transmission of the virus during this period. In an earlier episode showing footage from this same passage, Zatara were clearly throwing an orange back and forward to SV Archer - another boat. However unlikely, theoretically the virus could have been passed from one vessel to the other doing so. So they broke quarantine, and broadcast footage of themselves doing so. D'OH!! Also, being as well travelled as they are, the Zatara crew would be well aware that it's quite common when you're out at sea to be approached by fishing boats asking for fresh water, beer etc. The Australian government would be well aware of this too - THAT is why your time at sea can't count. Because no matter how long the boat has been at sea, there's absolutely no guarantee that the boat and crew have not interacted with others. (Note, I understand that Fiji was prepared to credit this time, but that's more a case of them not thinking through their own rules, and being more desperate for cruiser income). Another point they try to make in the video is that they ought to be allowed to serve their quarantine time on their own boat. While this makes sense on the face of it, what many people don't know is that earlier in the pandemic, the Australian Government did in fact allow this to happen, in Darwin. Then some idiot sailors who didn't give a shit about the rules (or spreading Covid, or the sailors who came after them), broke the trust by swimming ashore, and got caught. Bam, no more serving quarantine on your own boat. This selfish behaviour by a small minority of sailors then affects how governments have to treat ALL sailors, and is sadly quite common. We're currently stuck in the Indian Ocean on our boat during the pandemic, and have seen plenty of examples of other sailors flagrantly breaking or ignoring the rules, and giving all sailors a bad name. Then we have Keith complaining on the video, and directly to Border Force, that they were told something different before they left Fiji, and by implication it's not appropriate to be held to different rules 10 days later. But what planet has Keith been living on for the last 12 months? Obviously the rules have been changing on a day to day basis, as new outbreaks of infection occur - that's been the nature of the beast, and it's this very flexibility that has kept the virus under control in Australia. Zatara would have known that the rules changing during their passage was a risk, and chose to make the trip anyway. That's fair enough - we did the same thing at the beginning of the pandemic sailing from Sri Lanka to Maldives. We even tried in advance to get the Maldivian government to give us a guarantee that if they closed their borders while we were on passage, they'd still let us in. Not surprisingly, they wouldn't give us that guarantee, and we chose to set off anyway. As it turns out we were fine, and made it with a couple of days to spare, but it's a bit rich to make an informed choice about risk, and then complain about it to hundreds of thousands of viewers and effectively put the blame on Australia rather than accepting accountability personally, and then trying to work co-operatively (instead of belligerently) with Border Force to find a solution. I'm glad they worked it out in the end, but there was no need for the bad attitude. Videos like this, with frankly pretty pathetic whining that the rules are unfair or stupid when they know fine well that the Australian government is treating this logically, professionally and with the appropriate level of compassion (and thus VASTLY outperforming governments such as the UK and the US in keeping their citizens safe) are a part of the problem. I still gave the video a thumbs up, because I like the family and their videos, and appreciate the work that goes in to making the show. But I think the thanks they articulated to the Australian Government for letting them in were pretty quickly undermined by subsequently trashing the process (and by extension Australia) when they know fine well that their arguments are bogus. Come on Zatara, you can do better than this.

@SailingSteelSapphire4 жыл бұрын
@@VH-gw3qi Thanks for the feedback :-) It's hard to be chilled out about this topic when there's so much misinformation and unhelpful rhetoric being bandied around, and one's own personal safety is at stake. As a sailor stuck on a vessel in the Indian Ocean with far narrower options than normal in terms of sailing out of danger, we are literally at the mercy of the good graces of the governments in the countries around us. The actions of other sailors have a material impact on policy and behaviour of governments. One good example of that is the very ability of Zatara to be able to sail out of the cyclone zone in Fiji to Australia was as a direct result of the efforts of the Down Under Rally and a bunch of other sailors lobbying on their behalf and influencing government policy. I also gave an example in my post (rant!) above of the opposite impact - where the behaviour of a couple of sailors in Darwin early in the pandemic put paid to the ability of everyone since to be able to quarantine on their own boats. There has been some conjecture in sailing circles that the initial refusal by Australia, and ongoing refusal by New Zealand, to allow cruisers to seek shelter was directly influenced by this negative behaviour by some cruisers giving rise to the belief that they can't be trusted to self quarantine, and the heavy resources required to manage and monitor such an easily mobile group are simply not worth the hassle. So, my point is, this stuff matters. Broadcasting half truths and misrepresentations matter, because they influence how we as a group are perceived by the authorities, which then affects the policies they set. And while that may not matter that much to the typical viewer of the Zatara vlogs watching from the comfort of their own home, it does have the potential to affect me and my family, as I sit here floating thousands of miles from home at the mercy of the governments around me. Keith and co did an excellent job describing the Blue Lanes Initiative in Fiji when they first arrived there, and I circulated links to their video in a couple of places where I know government officials from other countries monitor yachties, in the hope that they might be inspired by a good example. So, I'm plenty happy to give credit where it's due. But I know Keith prides himself on being a plain talking good ol' boy, so I'm sure he'd value other people speaking plainly and speaking out if they disagree with something he's broadcasting, right? Especially if they're well qualified to have an opinion on it.

Twitter? Reddit? i listen to several News broadcasts and not all from the US. Do you think there's some mega conspiracy against the whole world? Do you think Italy made that whole Covid thing up? How about Russia? Who do you think might be responsible for that conspiracy? Australia has done better regarding Covid. But, they still have Covid and people in Australia are dying of Covid. And a lot of people are dying because of ignorance and "rights." They don't wear their masks because it's against their "rights." Or, they have huge social affairs regardless of how many people they kill if they pass on the virus. That's worse than ignorant, it's murder. Your point regarding people dying from cars, bikes, cancer, etc is ridiculous. You can wear a mask, stay home,, get vaccinated and resolve Covid. I rarely say nice things about my gov, but for a state nearly 3 times the size of Texas, that's right next to SE Asia. I think we've done well to have had only 6 deaths from 1309 cases.. And we've made sacrifices to achieve that. Closed our borders a few times, had some short lockdowns, ran out of toilet paper for a month.. etc. So asking travellers to quarantine for a couple of weeks doesn't seem harsh.

All the rants on this video. Why should Aus have a specific and seperate set of rules for “cruisers” who are essentially a group of entitled rich white people on holidays. Australians can’t even get home at the moment and when they do they’re subject tot the same set of rules. A bit surprised by some of the comments here about the border force and police . Every sane person knows things can change in an instant with the covid rules and responses right now and unfortunately Keith and family were caught up in just that situation. In relation to the “you said” discussion with the police officer. The police officer’s reply was correct Keith said “you guys” pointing to the police officer and the police officer or the police had not been in discussion with Keith. Keith did clarify aus gov where the police officer agreed, with Keith. From what I saw in the video rules changed, Keith (rightly so) stated his case, police took it up with the authorities, issue solved. I also noted that Keith said the reason they were coming to aus was because it was safe. The reason it is safe is because of the fast response to a changing environment and the tireless work of our police, border force and health professionals. Compare the infection and death rate in australia per capita with America , the uk or many other places around the globe. I think Keith did well in stating his case passionately but respectfully and got a result. Keith and family welcome to Australia, hope you enjoy your stay and look forward to more vids. Cheers from the NT.

@Carolyn Bridge, They needed a Coronavirus test to get their Australian Visa so they were Covid negative! Then they spent weeks at sea in the middle of the ocean, no physical contact with anyone! So unless this virus can fly vast distances over water, common sense says that they're Coronavirus negative and they've been in quarantine at sea since leaving Fiji! Leaving the Zatara in the typhoon zone in the middle of the typhoon season is putting lives at risk! I just wished that Queensland Maritime Police and Border force used common sense!
@joseywales37894 жыл бұрын
@Carolyn Bridge, unfortunately "Innocent until proven Guilty in a Court of Law" is no longer the default position. With all of the electronics on board modern vessels, its not hard to prove where you've been and when because of the Satellite Navigation and AutoPilot. We've got sat nav on our mobile phones, the satellite navigation on board ships and boats are that much more complex and have redundancy. I expect that Keith sets up the Automatic Pilot in Fiji, after checking the weather and setting up way points and doesn't touch it until he's entering Brisbane port, The Zatara sails herself. This isn't hard to download and proves that speed and bearing hasn't changed and therefore they couldn't have come in contact with anyone! It's not right to punish the people who are NOT breaking the rules, they should spend the time and manpower seeking out the people who are breaking the rules. Facts and common sense have been lost!
@RogerWilco14 жыл бұрын
@Carolyn Bridge if this were a real pandemic and a real threat people wouldn’t be “breaking rules” they would be exercising self preservation. They are breaking “rules” because the “rules” are nonsense. Remember-- when medicine was science based, quarantines were only for the sick. There is no transmission of COVID from non-sick. Thus anyone who isn’t obviously sick is not a risk. This whole quarantine nonsense has no basis in science. It’s just government violating people’s rights- and probably getting bribes from “quarantine hotels”.

Stop watching the news with the fake numbers and start doing your own research. Cases DO NOT COUNT> they just CASES> the more you test the more cases you have,. DUH! The PCR test isn't designed to detect a virus and creates a lot of false positives. Bottom line is...YOU'RE BEING PLAYED if you think Austr is better because of their stringent policies.
