Ava, Look for active cultures listed on the container from the store. I use a greek yogurt that has seven different active cultures. I start with 7 quarts of milk. Using a slow cooker, raise to 180F. Turn off the slow cooker. Allow to cool to 110F. I mix two cups of the heated milk with once cup of the starter yogurt and add back into the warm milk. I use multiple kitchen towels to cover the shut off slow cooker. I wait between 17-20 hrs or so. Using a colander and cheesecloth, strain the yogurt mix. You have to keep draining the yogurt until you get the consistency you want. It will take between 15-24 hrs. During the straining process keep the batch refrigerated. I will strain/drain off four quarts of whey which can be used in many ways (no pun intended) leaving 96 ozs (four 24 oz containers). When I can get it, close dated full fat organic milk is best and cheapest. I find that the milk can be past the "best by" date by a week or so as long as it has been kept cold. Add whatever you like or eat plain.

1) steering “reverse direction” the opposite direction you’re facing for IS HARD but it does get more intuitive the more you do it. 2) Love that you’re making your own yogurt. I make my own too as a way to save cost and cut down on waste (using glass bottles of milk you can return to the store). It was then that I learned that whey was the only difference between regular and Greek yogurt too 🤯. Also found that hot summer days made it easier to make without using any dinosaur squeezings which makes it pretty dang spiffy.

A more passive way of cooling is to put the lithium Batteries on a heat sink and with the fan and more circulation maybe a Aluminum pad on all lithium batteries with a exhaust fan to the head area , to me 35 c is body temperature ,and for emergency cooling empty the ice out of the freezer under the batteries ,carefully to not let the bottom of batteries get wet if all fails order replacements that-can handle the more heat from the charging system. Yes best to make own home made ( scratch) breads and yogurts and ( stores food) keep in brisker or cool ( bilge) storage 😋, by the way what is the water ( sea) temperature under the hull ? Maybe cooler under the boats hull 🌬

35ºC? Is that high temp threshold just a little too low? Is that something you've just set for yourself? Or is that temp specific for your type of lithium batteries? I thought Lithium batteries can be safely charged between -20ºC to 60ºC. Bumping the high temp threshold up to 40ºC (as was recommended) is more real-world realistic IMO.
@HammerRocks

Mads, seriously now I'm a electronics engineer working with lithium batteries for the last 15+ years. There's never ever been a battery that the datasheet said 35C max for charging. Almost all LiFePO4 batteries have the same ratings. 0 to 55 charge, -20 to 55 discharge. And ok say these are your safety limits, keep it 5C lower than the limit and you more than fine!. I really don't understand where the DIY community finds these numbers... 38C. Here in Greece in the summer wouldn't be able to operate them at all. i've worked with Winston cells, the factory called Thundersky and done thousands of hours worth of testing with 100Ah and 200Ah and bigger cells. I'm also a functional safety engineer and have designed several BMS. Don't bother with the cells! Change the setting to 50 and you're fine. Your inverter does need air to breathe though.
@mckenziekeith7434
@mckenziekeith7434 Жыл бұрын
I agree 100 percent. The thundersky datasheets say 60 C. 50 C is perfectly fine. The cells probably won't ever reach 50 C because Athena can't charge them fast enough for much self-heating. I don't have that much experience with LFP but I HAVE read the datasheets and worked professionally with other Li chemistries for many years.

Thanks for that info. In our marina there are lots of folks with lithium banks and a saloon temperature of 38°C is pretty normal in summer, and sometimes higher. We have water temperatures of 28°C so cooling options are limited. After watching this I was a bit concerned about how you could even charge an EV in Queensland between October and March. Folks do so it seems.

Sounds like you need to talk to Victron. Your charging system may be charging with too much power (for that ambient temperature) and overheating the batteries--and the system should be able to cut back the charge rate, in order to prevent that. I wonder if you could order in some larger heat sink fins, or Peltier effect coolers, to attach directly on the batteries?

It may be an Idea to swap places in the tender. Petrol engines have the throttle arm on the left of the engine and are driven from the right (facing forward). IE the helm sits on the Starboard side of a tender rolling the throttle towards them to increase power, and away from them to decrease. This is a more natural steering and seating position for most folks. Hope this helps 😁👍 Sail safe guys.

Not very far into this video, but 35 Celsius is way to low of a temperature protection setting my friend. I don't use the Winston cells, or the REC BMS, but I find 45 to work perfectly for my professional installations. Even though it's well below the top end of what a LiFePO4 can take temperature wise without damage, I prefer a decent safety buffer so 45 Celsius does that perfectly imo. (edit: I see you've chosen 40 Celsius. I still think the Winston cells will be fine at 45 Celsius. They don't conduct heat as well because of their case's R rating, but you are in the tropics, you need a setting 10 degrees above ambient at least if you don't want disconnects. Batteries make heat when they work hard. Victron's options can set up a temperature controlled fan for you too if you don't mind that noise in the berth and want to keep them set to 40.)

Cooling the Batteries and BMS. You have an excellent heatsink all around you, all you have to do is gather some of that water and use it to cool your electrical storage system! In the first instance, and assuming that you have a spare water strainer and two Tee Pieces for the raw water hoses in your engine room, you could utilise an oil cooler or heater matrix-size radiator from a car and attach one of your fans to it to push cooled sea-water temperature air over the equipment. For the time being, the use of a 12V pump and domestic water hose, lowered over the side (or through a window when at anchor) with a piece of cheesecloth/muslin/Ladies hose over the input hose as a strainer and passing through copper water pipe bent or using 90 degree bends to form a 100mm square would do until you have a scrapyard available! "Think outside the box, it is more fun that way."

Mads, some tower style computers use evaporator coils for internal cooling. Just as an off-the-cuff thought, would installing a stainless-steel evaporator, and a pump that would pump seawater through the evaporator, work for you? Fans could be used to push or pull air through the evaporator. I realize installation would mean raising Athena out of the water long enough to install a through hull below the waterline, and an overboard discharge above the waterline. Thoughts?

The coconut shell will splint later on. If you want to have one long term, you have to cut it with a hand saw (i know, massive pain in the bee hind) and then after relieving it of its contents, store it in the fridge for at least half a month. After, it will become shelf stable and you can sand it down and make it into a bowl. I have a bunch of them, one from each tropical country i've been in and the first few cracked, unfortunately. The idea doesn't belong to me, i found a tutorial online. PS: Ava's hack does work, and you could even do that in fiberglass, but you need to shape the screw (presumably they used a screw) such that it doesn't hook when it travels. It takes longer, but it does work and in a pinch, it's better than nothing. I broke the arbor on one of my bigger hole saws and i used that method to cut a hole in Aquaroc which is reinforced cement with fiberglass and other goodies. It worked very well. The shape of the screw i used (i used a 6mm metric one for it) was basically a diamond blade of about 2 mm thickness. I put my drill in low gear, high torque and first scored the path using my hand to turn the drill. The cut was clean, very clean considering that the Aquaroc is basically fiber in the first few layers.

Mads-have you validated the temperature sensor that the REC uses? My 4 (Victron) LFP’s each have its own temp sensor and each reports an inaccurate temp by default. The software allows an offset input for calibration. I’m pretty sure the REC software also has a temperature offset variable. Good to hear positive on skypower. I went “blue” for insurance (and piece of mind) but your setup (REC/Winston) is awesome and was a close second in the risk/cost benefit trade space(s). Edit: oh, a multi tool makes a fair substitute for a jigsaw. There are cordless models out there. A dremel can also be used to widen a circle fairly accurately. Finish the cut with a round file and no one will ever see the imperfect circle😉. If you don’t have either, the $$ you save by not having a “one off” hole saw will make a good investment in a useful tool. (And buy more coconuts for Eva to make useful bowl thingys😂)

Mads that was the first time I've ever heard about charging lithium's when they're warm. I always thought it was just about not charging them when they were cold. I have six hundred amp hours of victron lithium batteries with the external BMS. It's in my cabinet where the washer and dryer used to be in my motorhome, fortunately there are louvers on the doors. It can get pretty warm in there when bulk charging. The batteries are at least seven or eight years old and still going strong. I have to admit that the yogurt thing got me thinking. I like to drink kefir, and I have an instapot, just have to get some starter. I wonder if I can make it with the commercially made kefer that I use with active cultures.... I gave all my hole saws away a few months ago. Thought I'll never use them again, and thought of it during the episode. Just think of it as a shakedown Cruise. At least the first year or two. But you should be extremely proud of what you've done with your warrior 38. She is a beauty. I like the way the bowl turned out. Although sanding a piece of coconut with 60 grit sandpaper does not sound like my idea of fun. As far as hurricane season goes, if it looks like it's going to be a busy season goes south, quiet, go North. Either way I think you'll enjoy it.

You can charge them when they are warm. 35 C is ridiculously conservative for a boat in the tropics. The ambient temp inside the boat may hit 35 C. However, adding more ventilation is still a good idea.

Show Ava a Thai longtail; That ought to encourage her. Mads, you have reached the need for electrical items beyond hardware stores. Look for an Industrial Electrician or even the local power authority. You might find a secret stash of parts nobody else has ever heard of.

That was so weird. Here I am sitting in my cockpit watching this episode when who should come gliding past but Mads and Ava! You really need to get that gas powered outboard so you can't sneak up on people 😅

No prior interest in yoghurt (apart from occasional consumption) but totally transfixed by Ava's bubbly enthusiasm and feel I've just got to give it a go now - partially to get over the shock of realizing that Mads was finally out of sandpaper!!!! Cheers all, wonderful episode.

would be terrible for mads if someone just happened to give ava a ginger beer starter or a sourdough starter. the poor bloke would be forced to drink ginger beer and delicious bread as well as fresh yoghurt. fast charging for lithium is 2-45c over 45c you need to limit charging rate.

Isn't 35C a little too low for a high temp threshold for charging lithium batteries?

You guys are a riot. Totally living the sail life. My two favorite islands are tortilla and st. Barts. But there is so much do do island hoping and going around. Visiting the baths, buying lobster from Sydney. We spent a week during and after a hurricane on Tortolla, and it was still the most fun I’ve ever had. We had to put the boat in parakeeter bay and go into a room on the island for one night, but th islanders are prepaired for it.

Due to your delay in posting videos you have already left but I do hope you went south and not north... The hurricane season in the islands is pretty much between August and September but the risk is low because the hurricanes tend to pass by Barbados's southerly location and hit the more northern islands in the Caribbean.

If you want to save some dishes, you can just put the milk directly into the Mason jar, and water in the pot. Just be sure there is a folded rag or a couple of Mason jar rings between the bottom of the pan and the jar. Bring the water up to a boil, and the milk follows suit. Take the jar out to cool. This will save dishes and if you're going to wash other dishes you'll already have hot water ready to go
