A lot of people know about the Magical Girl genre becuz of Sailor Moon. But I grew up watching Pretty Cure, so I'm more familiar with it. I love both series.

@@Lucy-c82 Unfortunally, only a few seasons have been dubbed, 4, to be exact, Futari wa Precure, Yes 5, Smile!, And Doki Doki, you can find those last 2 on Netflix, under the name Glitter Force, and the first 2, their dubs have been forgotten, and are very rare to find, so you can find them subbed around the internet :3

Something interesting to note is the difference between the two series inspirations and how those played out overtime. Sailor Moon takes almost all of it's inspiration from the Super Sentai series, while taking little to nothing from the magical girl series that came before. Because of this approach, and the insane popularity of the series, the magical girl genre took almost a complete 180 in terms of tone and general setup. On the other hand, PreCure's main inspiration is just itself. Especially when you're talking about Heartcatch and on (Yes!5 and Fresh definitely stuck closer to their post-Sailor-Moon-magical-girl-genre roots), a lot of the motifs and themes and the general way the show is setup mirrors the original three Futari wa seasons. Compared to Sailor Moon, its influence is much more insular. Just something interesting to note. Great video again man!

Pretty sure the MotW formula that PreCure uses is close to its big brother franchise Kamen Rider. Even some of martial attacks they use are direct spoofs of that series. Example: The PreCure Kick used in Happiness Charge was a basically a magical girl Rider Kick that (Not being super flashy) can't beat an MotW. and Heart Catch had a whole slew of spoof attacks that were basically them just ragging on their big brother. I mean, even the Original Futari Wa was mainly inspired by the older versions of Kamen Rider. Max Heart kind of deviated from that, but you could still feel the Sakuga spilling out of the fight scenes. Now a days PreCure tends to have less Sakuga in it, but at its core it is still the little sister series to Kamen Rider (which actually did better in Revenue during Hugtto).

in my opinion, Sailor Moon brought light to magical girl genre to the west. it is still highly referenced in the cartoons for day. however precure is newer and have ever changing story similar to that of gundam. Power Rangers ongoing 1 few seasons were similar to Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon series is a legend. Precure is a well thought of series, and I see your point as it captures peoples hearts. So at present it is better. but making my vote void, I can't compare a series that ended years ago to series ongoing. what was relatable then to what's relatable now is kinda hard. we should just say love them both

But even though it's made for kids, it Do Has A Lot Of Dark And Emotional Scene's in it! So it's really cool that Precure doesn't scare away to be a bit 'brutal' even to the younger audiences!

As a fan of both, I appreciate that this analysis video was mainly focused on comparing the two magical girl series rather than arguing which one is better than the other. For me, I prefer Pretty Cure over Sailor Moon but I acknowledge the latter's impact on the magical girl series as a whole. P.S. When you got to the part with the new characters overshadowing the original members for Pretty Cure, I was waiting for Cure Ace's name to be mentioned but that's just me.

I think the problem with sailor moon crystal is that they wanted to attract the adult audience rather than the kids lol Because what supports the precure nowdays are the toys ... the children's audience ... ie the kid's appeal on precure.... But with sailor moon got into a super dramatic story with a weird anime trait that wasn't appealing for nobody, not even the adults to begin with... so sailor moon got forgetable except for longing fans who still likes the manga and the original anime.

I call myself a magical girl fan but my great secret shame is that I could never get into Sailor Moon. Precure holds that place for me instead. I love the action but also am generally more won over by the focus on friendship over romance. Being able to pick and choose the series also helps, instead of having to watch every single one.

I haven't watched a lot of Sailor Moon, and I've only watched a few seasons of Precure, though I'd say I like Precure more. I enjoy the action and a lot of the characters have really cool designs. I still like Sailor Moon, I'm just not a die hard fan. Overall, this was a pretty good video. One suggestion I could make for a video is things you'd like to see in future Precure seasons. Like any theme ideas? Something they could try differently with the formulas commonly used? I got a few ideas, tho I'd like to know what your ideas are if you have any.

I'm obviously more of a Sailor Moon fan, but I love both. Nothing will ever beat Japanese Magical Girls. Sailor Moon is gorgeous in its bulbousness, warmth and nostalgia, and the melodies make you feel like you've heard this tune in a past life. Precure is great for its epic fights, wide universe and franchise. And in both franchises there is a deep meaning and philosophy. I truly love both of them.

Literally the only reason I know about Sailor Moon is because a girl said it's name like 2 years ago. Up until that point, I had no idea what it was. Also, I watched Glitter force like 3 or 4 years ago (I didn't have high standards). So technically I knew about Pretty Cure before i knew about Sailor Moon. Personally, i like Pretty Cure much more. The outfits are always so nice and pleasing to the eye, I don't really like it when a magical girl group all have the same outfit with slight variations. That is the case with some seasons of Pretty Cure though, but not all. Also the fighting is always so badass and incredible to watch, especially in seasons like Hugtto. And even when they aren't throwing hands, the magical attacks are always so badass or beautiful. Like in Kira kira. There wasn't a lot of physical action, but the magical attacks were beautiful. But that's just my opinion. Like what you want, I don't really care. Just respect other people's opinions, be civil, have some morals, thank you.

That’s a nice comparison. It’s tougher for me to analyze which one is better. The closest one I could think is Sailor moon because they have more physical and dark scene (which that goes in the 90s anime). Also, they have characters development (I’m talking about 5 mains one) The one you said “The monster of the week” is more creative better then Precures’ monsters. I think their monsters is just plain lazy where you get the same designs but in different styles. For precure, I like the original starting with a tomboy and a girly girl which I like the idea along with Splash star. But when they move on, they try to make it more colorful and attract the kids’ audiences rather then go something dark (I can’t really describe it.) Every seasons when they transformed, they always have to say their intro and who they are. I think its just repetitive because we already knows who they are and what is their job is. Plus, the villains already knows their identity so, why bother to repeat every single episodes. I hope you understand my point of view and hope the next video will be the prediction of the next precure theme.

One thing I think Sailor Moon prevails in is aesthetics. The art is just so good to look at, especially the backgrounds. It's just more pleasing to the eye compared with the blindingly bright colors in Pretty Cure, which feels cheap sometimes

As a precure fan, I actually agree with this. The older precures (precures that came out before suite) had a bit of a softer color palette and had a nicer aesthetic which was really pleasing to the eyes. For the newer precures, I dont mind the bright colors, however the brightness can definitely get out of hand sometimes which made me have a epileptic seizure few times before. I really love precure, but i think they need to go with more softer aesthetics tbh.

I am and will be a life long moonie and my favorite season of precure is Princess Precure. In my opinion, Sailor Moon is for a slightly older audience. The costumes are not as dramatic, some villains have strong sensual undertones, the henshins themselves are more sensuous in nature and the series itself is more revolved around love and relationships. When it comes to precure, its for a younger audience. The villains of the day are more silly and childish in nature, the henshin scenes are longer and more elaborate. The girls are always fully dressed in their henshin sequences, the costumes are over the top and in my view, the series is more about friendship and family. I could be wrong, but that's my opinion.

Honestly, I’m gonna have to pick Sailor Moon. The old version has a aesthetic style and such comedy that I like. I understand it very much and I think Sailor Cosmos is releasing in 2023. Sailor Moon anime is my favorite because I really love space. Pretty cure is good though, but I just prefer Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon, Mercury, and Venus are my favorite scout guardians of the inner system space. There’s much more sailor guardians, some evil, some dead, and some alive out there outer space.

Ok I think you have to remember that the reason why people know Sailor Moon versus Pretty Cure it is BECAUSE of the fact that Sailor Moon was released in the US. The only seasons that have been released is the original, and the Netflix rips. Toei Animation is SO very much missing out by not giving a US release of this show because I would love to watch the other series and the original of the Netflix versions BUT I would have to search out all of them on sites that are not sites you should be using to watch Anime on. Also no Sailor Moon is still VERY popular and they did give time between the 3rd and 4ths seasons to really make it good as well as to give time for Viz Media to re-dub all of the seasons including the one season that NEVER got an English dub until 2019.

I really love both series! Great job with the comparisons. Pretty spot on. I actually appreciate Sailor Moon and enjoyed the series (Still do) but ever since I discovered Pretty Cure, I preferred that franchise, hairs down. It’s not everyday you see young girls fighting DBZ/Power Rangers style. Sure, not all of them would have solid action (Kirakira comes to mind) but at least you can count on them to bring something different each year. My favorite season being Smile Precure. Personally, I say the Cures in that season use their elements better in comparison to Sailor Moon.

I choose sailor moon, (it's my childhood and my life :D), but yes, I watched some precure seasons: for example: fresh, happinesscharge, and i'm going to watch soon the current-airing season star twinkle. well, about tuxedo mask, it does not always help sailor moon, many times she can wash herself, or she is the one who has to save him xD (for example in the first season he was brain-washed and she saved him with the silver crystal help), the reason why precure can hit more punches and kicks is why the cures can fly when the sailors senshis cannot, the reason why one of the comments below says that pretty cure has better fight scenes, is because SM is old and is made on paper, while PrC is made to computer and is more modern, that's why. oh. yes: i always used to like colorful things too, and PrC it is more colorful than sailor moon (and some other magical girls (maybe), but more colorful does not mean better or make it better than other maho shojos. When I was thinking to rank PrC above Sailor Moon it was like: Just, no. i like precure but, i found impossible to rank it above usagi. this is mine little review of your review :D

Interesting thoughts; but something being more colorful is definitely a reason for a person to prefer something over another thing especially if someone likes colorful things as their desired aesthetic. I mean, I still haven't seen the first few Precure seasons since they are not as colorful. And yes I know Sailor Moon saved herself many times, but it is low compared to the amounts where she needs to be saved; that is why I said "most of the time" she needs saving. As for SM being made on paper/hadrawn animation, I don't think that's a valid reason at all. The SM series has had impressive feats of animation with beautiful attacks and trasnformations, so I doubt animating a fight scene is any different. Besides, DBZ is an old show as well, but has countless physical fights.

@@ScienceProject99 sorry if I answer late, I wanted to do it before, but I did not have time Xd haha, I already know that people prefer something more colorful, and I have nothing against that. about how colorful are first seasons of precure, try with the first one (futari wa prc) is one of the most colorful also :D. I repeat it again but in more detail: it is true that sailor moon needs most of time tuxedo to save her, and sometimes she can get up by herself, or she is who have to save him. but just imagine: sailor moon could fly like a cure, I would not need tuxedo to grab her when she's falling down, and imagine the cures without being able to fly, probably toei would have added some male figure in some season (or maybe I'm wrong). oh, just as a reminder: remember, in the last season Mamoru (tuxedo mask's civilian name) went to U.S.A, so sailor moon could not count on his help during all the season, and get up by herself in most of episodes. well, about the animation on paper and the action: my first PrC season was smile, in just the first half of this season I understood the concept of the whole franchise: sound effects of the punches and kicks always very exaggerated xD, there is a lot of dust in them, for example, in the firsts episodes of smile, the villians only gave them a small blow or push, and as soon as they reach the ground, a building or some object, a cloud of dust were appearing; and in episode 23 they confronted the allies of the main villain, and evidently quite dust. In conclusion that for the next seasons that I was going to watch I already knew how the fight scenes would be: always with punches and kicks with exaggerated sound effects in every episode, and in the half of the season and in the end quite dust, punches and kicks: in conclusion, the prc battles were already predictable; while in Sailor Moon the fact that they used those scenes in certain moments/episodes/movies was a bit more entertaining and surprising to watch, because they made those scenes be more special than usual ones. oh, by the way, you forgot to analyze a topic (the OST): well, let me analyze it: i think both of them have a great soundtrack: with SM: its songs almost always sounded very jazz style and they're more "simple" (best example is transformations). with PrC: (not all the seasons, but in some of them): transformations and attacks sounded very orchestral (best examples: smile, doki doki, go princess, suite). In SM i metioned "simple", well now i can explain why: in these prc seasons they used more variety of musical instruments while in sailor moon they used less variety of them: this means: toei put more effort on PrC OSTs. synthetic transformations OSTs: heartcatch, 1st transformation theme for fresh season. comparing the OPs is a bit hard for me, but maybe: SM are older Jpop songs and maybe the are a bit more orchestral while PrC are modern Jpop songs and the sound a bit artificial (or maybe is the contrary, srry xd i said is a bit hard to compare them)... about endings songs: mmm... i think SM wins, bc its endings sound more melodic and harmonious, while most of PrC is more artificial (a good example is the comparision of SM ed 1 and doki doki prc ed 1 and ed 2. sorry if I have extended that much my text xd, I hope you have understood my review better this time :D

I personally think Sailor Moon is better because it is more mature and hits a wider audience than Precure does. I mean, people of any age can like what they like but you can tell Precure was generally made for younger kids and Sailor Moon was made for teen to adult. I do like Precure though, my favorite series is Go Princess Precure and on Tumblr, I try to do this annually thing called "Precuruary" in which every Feb I focus on blogging about Precure stuff, though, as of recent years I haven't sadly been in the mood for it. One thing I definitely do mention in my Precure related blogs is that in terms of catching what middle school/childhood is like, Precure does a better job. I always thought the Sailor Scouts were in high school given how they look and how they act. It took me by surprise when I found out they were middle school. The design of the characters and how they behave in Precure, makes them more believable as young girls in middle school. I also like that they aren't boy crazy in Precure! I can see girls being curious about love as I once was too a young girl, but I wasn't all like "Oh this guy is hot." at most guys considered hunks by typical preps or drooling over boy bands. Not all girls, especially middle school age dream of boys and Precure definitely got that right! Though, I do do shippings sometimes, if said couple is interesting enough to me.

My BF is more to waiting for "What kind of Precure in the upcoming year". and myself, 10 years older, tend to ignore it and enjoy Sailor Moon series (and still cursing how nerfed Saturn over time). These points in the precure are more of my nitpicking, tho': 1) As late, whoever leads the Precure Team tend to have more screeching/shrill voice. Maybe starting from the... especially HUG. Especially annoying in the ED singing. From that, it seems they pick the most screeching voice as the lead character. 2) I hate how Maho Girls screwed the all developments into one episode of "What if the magic is appreciated" which is closer to final and most of characters' memories are reset at point blank that they don't even have memories before that. And the big bad boss "Yami" actually wanted "YUMMY" things in the end of episode? It's better to be as OVA. 3) Singing "I LOVE RICE". You know who sings it. She seems a great senior, but singing "I love rice" all over to defeat enemies are... well, NARM, at most. And how they all go singing to defeat the big boss? Yyyyyyeah, no. -From the same series, all the variable costume transformations are just for show for 3d stock footage instead of actually useful in combat. 4) "All Stars" deteriorates as the Precure gets too many to feat, story-wise. You need one scene to unite them, and make a conflicts for old-gen, either get kidnapped or something, and the all action-show while not too shabby, but gives nothing but "oh your favorite precure is here for 5 seconds". 5) The "Maho musical" movie is actually a good beginning for musical feat. However, one budget is spent only in one musical scene and then the next scene, the musical is so limited without variations/camera angle and such.

Regarding getting bailed out: there is one episode in Season 1 where Mercury gets cornered by Endymion by herself and not only outmaneuvers him but steals the black crystal from him as well, basically resolving an entire potential major threat, alone (since the crystal was supposed to combine seven powerful monsters they already fought in seven separate episodes). And this happens three minutes after Jupiter got humiliated by Endymion after trying to hold him off. It might have been nice to see more of that kind of thing.
