Kim puts the Sailrite Ultrafeed LS - 1 straight stitch sewing machine, that she received free from Sailrite, to the test by sewing multiple layers of upholstery fabrics. Great machine for anyone just starting out in upholstery and ready to get serious about sewing.

Thank you, Kim. Adding the Sailrite servo to this machine makes a world of difference. The control of a servo over a motor is like night and day. Sailrite's servo system replaces the motor and retains the portability of the machine.

Quick question - when sewing the cording, how do you keep the original stitching from showing in a cushion? On my current machine, I move the needle over just a bit & sew closer to the cording. Thank you!

+Patsy Spencer Great questions. I nudge the fabric a bit towards the needle while sewing and it does the trick.

Hello +Kim's Upholstery Great video! Thank you for posting this! I just had one question. I would be using this mainly for leather working (Backpacks, Wallets, Smaller Leather goods) and I am curious to know if the feed dogs or the foot leave any marks on the leather after sewing? Any information on this would be great! All the best!
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 7 жыл бұрын
You can place tape on the bottom of the pressure foot to prevent marks. This includes the bottom feeder as well. You can also lessen the presser on the foot as well.

Oh that's a cool idea, what kind of tape do you use/suggest? Thanks for the reply Kevin Sews Good to know the pressure of the presser foot can be altered, is that something that can be done without much tinkering with the machine? Not quite sure I trust myself enough to take something apart and put it back together again when machinery is involved!

Just plan old masking tape should work. Of course test it on a piece of scrap leather first.

Hi Kim, I'm Ana. Thank You for sharing your knowledge with us. Actually I was wondering why your Ls 1 sewing machine is slower then mine. Mine is quite speedy quite difficuld to control the stitches. Is there any way to slow it down?

As an overall...I think it needs to be made VERY CLEAR what this machine is really for and that is not Home Decorating and Upholstery unless one is using it exclusively to tear into big thick fabrics, multi-layered with seams that require more power. My main complaint is that the walking foot with the cording channel completely mashes fiber flex piping. For the sake of argument, I used a sturdier cording (although pillows and seat cushions will RARELY if ever, require such firm piping because obviously, these are COMFORT items) to see if it traveled under the channel more easily without so much strenuous guiding...nope. The seam used to create the piping, shows. You literally MUST push to the right on your cording to get a tight fit between plate and boxing. This annoys me since my other machines feed piping, top/bottom plate and boxing through like champs. They just can't chew on HEAVY upholstery. WHICH IS WHY I BOUGHT IT! The whole design of the walking foot with cording capabilities needs to be re-machined and re-imagined for the LS-1 if they want to promote it for Home Dec Sewing. Also... TENSION! I couldn't sit there one more second adjusting that tension from the 45 layers of Naugahyde the factory had tested it on. For such a large purchase, money and time, how about a little more investigation into the buyers intended USE of the machine to ensure that the "out of the box" experience isn't so frustrating? Also, a phone call to Matt, isn't going to be getting me the tension results I want. The man can only do so much. They've got multiple videos on the subject and its just a time-consuming task after settings designed for leather, etc. Kim...you're cute and a doll anyway.

Peggy Lewis I’m so sorry you had this experience. I was much more fortunate with the Sailrite I have. I’ve done both Slipcovers and cushions with great success. I use cotton and fiber flex cord in 5/32” with no issues. I suggest you talk with Sailrite directly. Hopefully they can help you.

Peggy Lewis If you have the wrong needle size, it will make tension hard to set. For typical apolstery fabrics a 16 or 18 with a number 69 thread is about right. If it seems like it needs more tension, use a bigger needle. If you need less, go smaller. Use a 16 needle and three layer of fabric. Get your tension right with that. After that, adjust tension mostly by needle size. When adjusting by needle size, you will find that the tension knob needs very little adjustment. On the sailright, you will still have to use the knob to a certain degree. On home machines, I rarely need to touch the tension knob. I adjust completely with needle size. Always use the smallest needle you can without it breaking or bending. Only go larger if your stitches appear that you need more tension.

Thank you Ardvarkkkkk1. As an industrial machine user, I realize all these things. Taking 4 hours to fix tension doesn't make it: *Quieter. *Less clumsy. *The walking foot a non-usable item for piping. * Not stable on just a normal sewing table. I could only get it to stop wobbling on a K leg. Its the price of many moderately priced compound feed industrial machine heads and when you add a Servo motor and the table for stability its only about portability which would have to be THE REASON for purchasing. And when you think of it that way, for sail repair on sight, etc. Makes good sense! I personally ( I know Kim likes it and that's great) don't understand why anyone would buy it. Even for portable use as in "taking it to a class," etc, would first break your back. Second never have a flatbed to work on. And lastly, sound like a freight train coming through. Just an honest review since I believe Kim got hers for free. No offense!
