This is so helpful. We searched and searched for the tiny lampshade that is on the sconce light near the companionway on our boat. It took forever driving around to different stores to find this weird tiny size. Now years later it is getting stained and gross after living aboard that whole time but we no longer have a car to shop around for a suitable replacement. Now we can recover the old one with the help of this handy tutorial, and use some spare matching boat fabric as well. Thanks Sailrite! The only downside is for this project we can't use our brand new Ultrafeed LSZ-1 sewing machine which we just bought from you at the Annapolis boat show. We do have plenty of other projects where it will be used.

@earljmaui_boy25465 жыл бұрын
@@SailriteDIY It would appear to me that IF it is not in two pieces, one could roll the frame over the paper as shown. I do think Dodie is speaking of two rings completely detached from fabric... I would hot glue them together using some balsa wood, thin lath of any sort, or anything that can be cut to the desired length... which represents the final height of the lampshade. It doesn't have to be strong, just sturdy enough to draw a single pattern (roll over its circumference twice... yes?). (I'm not sure of your desire to have hot glue guns around your tables and fabrics... ... 𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐠𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩... under the shade tarps ... (wink)) Just make three pieces and attach them equidistant around the rings as temporary ribs. (Remove them before assembly and attach one ring at a time...) * * * Then proceed as described in the video. * * * Until that time. . .

Hey there! My question is just about the adhesive spray- it says it's extremely flammable but in your experience has it been alright for lamp heat? I'm assuming so but just want to double check and know if you had anything else to mention about it. Thank you!
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
It is very flammable when it is freshly applied, but when it dries completely the solvents evaporate and it is very heat resistant after drying.

Store-bought lampshades have a different kind of bottom and bottom hem than you show here. They have a slightly protrusion on the inside, and the edge of the fabric is tucked into it for a neat finish. How is that done?
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
Not by hand, that is done using machines to bond the edges with glue or RF welding.

Any particular fabric? Obviously stretchy is a bad idea, but does it have to be thick? Also, if it's a drum shade, I shouldn't need to make the pattern - just measure the height and length, right?
@SailriteDIY7 жыл бұрын
As long as the fabric you pick does not allow the spray glue to bleed through the fabric it should work fine. Yes, you are correct.

Anyone know any videos on how to re-cover or re fabric RECTANGLE lamp shades????
@wolfc87555 жыл бұрын
Do exactly the same thing as shown in the video but mark all the corners on the pattern and then on the cloth. Then snip straight into the seam allowance of the cloth at each marked corner (only cut as deep as the fold will be) to make it easier to fold the cloth over into the inside of the lamp shade when applying it.

Can anyone recommend an alternative to the spray adhesive? I live on an island (Madeira) and people won't ship aerosols because of the explosion risk in unpressurized cargo planes. I've looked everywhere on the island for the 3M 77 - no luck - hardly any 3M products stocked on the island - I looked for UHU spray as an alternative - no luck. I've tried different suppiers on Amazon but they will not ship. Could I use white PVA glue? I have the fabric AND the lampshades but don't want to risk spoiling either by using unsuitable glue. Thanks in advance.

Some fabrics have a coating on them not allowing glues to stick. Always test a fabric to be sure it works before using. Sometimes the fabric can be washed which will remove some of the protective coating (but always follow the manufactures directions for washing).
