"Saint Joan" is a chronicle play of six scenes and an epilogue by George Bernard Shaw.The play retells Joan of Arc's story,depicting her transformation from a humble peasant girl to a revered military leader, and finally to a condemned heretic who was burned at the stake for prioritising her personal religious beliefs over church teachings.
B)Character-
Joan of Arc is a national heroine of France.She was a peasant girl ,who, believing that she was acting under divine guidance ,led the French army in a momentous victory at Orléans in 1429 that repulsed an English attempt to conquer France during the Hundred Years' War.
Joan of Arc was officially canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920.
C)This monologue is taken from the sixth scene of the play, in which Joan of Arc is forced to sign a recantation statement in which she denies believing in the divine nature of her voices and pledges allegiance to the authority of the church.Joan signs the letter in the hope that it will secure her freedom, but it instead results in a life sentence, which she considers to be worse than death.The outburst in the monologue is a result of her realisation that she has been tricked and betrayed.Her refusal to accept the false statement ultimately leads to her death.
