I think there were reports that they wanted to make the game different but Deep Silver told them to go down this "modern sensibility" garbage path... don't know how much I believe that though, because you can't fake that type of thing the way they wrote it... you can tell they thought they were clever

The fans warned them that a gang of "Good Guys" (characters that players were supposed to want to be friends with) made no sense as murderous gangsters. This only got worse when the reason for all the crime & murder was to pay off the "Good Guys" university fees. It's really sad that so much good quality hard work can go into a game. And yet the story can make or break the game. And in this case the terrible story & dialogue killed this game dead. If the story had been good this game would have done OK like dead island.

I was welcoming to the idea of zoomer's row. Having this whiny, sensitive cast become hardened stonewalled killers as they delve deeper into the criminal lifestyle would of been a good premise, but these writers seem to be opposed to character development of any sort.
@zephyr8072
@zephyr8072 Жыл бұрын
That would've been a great premise. Have them walk in thinking everything will be easy, cracking stupid jokes and acting like it's a sitcom only for reality to brutally hit them in the face. Friends die, things go wrong. Maybe the Nawhali becomes a mentor who teaches the survivors how to become hardened criminals. Maybe he eventually betrays them (because "it's just business" and not for the stupid reasons in the game) or maybe he doesn't. Either works. Better than this crap anyway.
@SwanCollins

@@zephyr8072 betrayals are good when you can see the perspective. Nauhalli being a mentor then taking the boss out because they became too unhinged or disruptive would have been a nice nod to the original. A better story would've been that the zoomers try to take make their gang but they're clearly not prepared for it, so the other gangs kill all of the boss' friends for even trying, which leads to the boss having an epiphany about how the gang thing should actually work, while also hardening in personality and leaving the zoomer stuff behind. Then the boss rescues Nahuali and keeps him as an advisor, he never betrays the boss and instead plays the role of hardened criminal who teaches the boss, similarly to other main characters in older SR games.

So holy hell that "speech" at the end of Going Overboard is dripping with clearly unintentional irony. Talentless middle managers telling you how to do their jobs, have had every opportunity handed to them, and haven't had to work for their success? That's literally the main cast in a nutshell. They're talentless hacks, whose instructions were probably just "go do gang shit." The missions of the game show that they have no idea how gangs even work, such as tweeting out their secret hide out, blowing up resources that they've already captured and can use, and every part of Shooting the Shit, Dustmoot, Donut Run, and Corporate Retreat. Oh, and not knowing that gang members pay their bosses, not the other way around. They don't view the Saints as a gang, they view it as a company that's called a gang, and they are the incompetent middle and upper management... Wait maybe that's why they listen to that guy from Marshall in non-compete clause. The "boss" literally thinks their bank is a company.

I love the very slight and probably not intended symbolism here. The Boss' outfit you gave her is a sort of blue/bluish purple (at least on my monitor), which symbolizes the fact they're only half the Saints of old. Sure, they have the numbers, guns, vehicles, and 3rd Street based HQ, but they don't have any of the heart or soul that any of the old Saints had. Just something I noticed.

I get that it's sentimental to her and all that but the thing that annoys me more is that car really was her entire personality, to the point where she thinks everyone else also values their cars more than their own entire existences, **existences!** not even just their lives. But I have seen people of this demographic be weirdly obsessed with their crappy, secondhand, barely held together cars to the point of breaking up friendships over not wanting to hear their god-awful playlist on the radio. Because it's THEIR car, so it's THEIR rules and everyone needs to know that THEY HAVE A CAR!!!! so they'll deafen everyone within a 3 mile radius with said awful playlist and anyone who doesn't like it can leave. That's who Nina is supposed to appeal to, basically.

According to recently discovered info about the game's development, there were issues with the tone of the game because Volition wanted a more grounded story and characters but Deep Silver pressured the team to make the game more in-line with Saints' Row The Third, forcing the developers to rewrite the script multiple times to add more humor and "humanity" to the main cast. However, it should be noted that it was Volition's decision to make the game as socially inoffensive as possible.

I think the perfect comparison is in SR2, the whole Ronin Casino 'heist'. In SR2, Pierce comes up with this whole complex plan, complete with figurines and maps and floor plans. Then Gat comes in, offers his 'suggestion' by taking one of the figurines, and just knocking the rest over suggesting they "just shoot up the damn place". It was a perfect riff on San Andreas and their whole involved mission chain for a casino heist, showing the obvious silliness of this whole complex thing and that the Saints don't bother with that sort of complex thing... they're a gang. They go for the obvious answer with brutal efficiency. And the whole thing with Pierce doing all that work for obvious nothing and no respect is played as a joke... he's not thinking like a gang lieutenant, so no one pays him mind. In this.... remake? Redo? Undo? you get the blatant Pierce-stand-in offering this whole complex 'business plan' model for how to make the Saints a gang. This time, there's no Gat, so instead everyone goes along with it. Gat went away as did the efficiency and brutal tactics. It's no longer a gag, they're not a gang they're a corporate entity who can be bought out somehow in turn.... which is kind of some disturbed meta-commentary about the series itself. As was put in the fourth game, "The people were confused: were the Saints sociopathic killing machines hell-bent on destruction, or puckish rogues living a life of mirth and whimsy? The Saints needed clarity of purpose, and so the course was set: more fun, less mercy-killing." It was a summary of the series as a whole. The series changed, instead it's all comedy and less gravitas, and loses something for it becoming a pastiche instead of pointed parody. Guess I have to give Volition props: they managed to do a reboot, and yet somehow kept it in full continuity of the previous games that no longer happened (time travel and a whole deus ex machina results in no Johnny Gat, which changes everything, and keeps with the gradual tonal shift that was intentional.) Probably a mistake, in retrospect., and now that they were folded into Gearbox even the originals are neglected and forgotten (like the in-development rework of the PC port for SR2 being more or less abandoned). What a waste of a good series, the originals killed by its own intended shift away from them.

Now *this* is how you make an intro This man explained exactly what his problem with this game is, why he thinks its a problem, and gives us a scope of the layout for the rest of the video. All within the first minute I just got done watching a video on how SR3 was the start of the decline. I wanted to listen to the guy, but for a 40 minute video.. it took him 11 minutes to even begin to explain why he felt the way he did.. and it was a simple "i liked this mission but the one after it sucked" Felt like i was being blueballed the whole time. You know how the story would be massively improved? Keep the Boss as a rookie, but maybe have Eli be an intern that your character feels bad for and wants to help them. Have the Boss keep the Marshall career, and help them help the town with taming the gangs. Perhaps they can meet the others in their respective gangs, remaining competent and following orders but having mercy on Neenah and Kevin as they surrender. The two think about their savior and wind up running from the gangs, befriending yours. Eventually, due to corruption from the Marshall brass, you and Eli get fired. Perhaps to introduce the Saints, have your character say a small prayer, or make the sign of the Cross. Maybe have them be natives to the city and want to see it cleaned up, only taking shelter in the abandoned church with your new friends and forming the Saints in order to help the city. Have the missions modeled after SR 1-3, where the missions have to do with taking care of the gangs and ousting Marshall, eventually leading to the Saints being the dominant game. Oh, and have the gang not be so insufferable.

There's a specific moment in this game that I find VERY shitty: Eli gets shot, Kevin pours what I can only assume it's vodka (why would he have medical alcohol in his fridge?) on his wound, Eli cringes from the pain like a lil' bitch and Kevin says "You're being very brave." Like, bro, what??? Brave? Did this flathead just say that Eli is brave? For what? Did he single handedly dispatch a horde of Ronin? Did he take a shotgun shot on his leg after disregarding Tony's orders to keep quiet? Did he even fucking go through cyberspace to insert a "key" into a "lock" while being shot at by a bunch of aliens? No. Blud literally took ONE bullet and now he's "brave" for not dying.

I keep coming back to this video for the sledgehammer having ammo bit (though I wish it were). Of all the oddities of this game, that one baffles me the most. I mean, the concept of somehow limiting how often yo can use it isn't even that far out there, maybe you quickly run out of stamina and have to wait to replenish it or something (though even that doesn't sound very fun, it's something), but they choose the single most baffling and hilariously stupid option that you could've possibly went with, just giving it "ammo" akin to a gun with no obvious rationale for why. Of all the things I remember this game for in the years to come, it will be giving melee weapons ammo.

I imagine it's been addressed in the comments of earlier versions of the video already (possibly by yours truly, I can't recall), but you can actually grab a sword by the blade in combat. The lower half of the blade (aka the 'strong') is rarely if ever going to be what you use to cut someone since it means letting an enemy closer than you have to. Further, the strong is going to be where the blade will take more hits if you use it to parry or block, so keeping it sharp is somewhat of a waste of effort, if not actually detrimental to the sword's longevity by removing material to maintain a cutting edge. As further proof, techniques called half-swording, characterized specifically by gripping the blade for various reasons like increased control, shorter range or improved guard, are also common in Medieval and Renaissance fencing manuals, so uniform sharpness would have been something the user didn't appreciate in their swords. With all that said, it's fair to criticize that the Boss likely wouldn't know any of that, thus doing something blatantly stupid by their own understanding as well as forgoing the reach of their own weapon for no apparent reason. Plus, since it's a modern sword, some dumb-dumb might have sharpened it uniformly anyway, making it actually dangerous to half-sword with.
@zambekiller
@zambekiller Жыл бұрын
That only works for large blades like long swords or claymores and often times if you're using one of those then you'd be wearing something like plate mail or some kind of hand protection
@wishuponamonkeyspaw2458
@wishuponamonkeyspaw2458 Жыл бұрын
@@zambekiller It "works" for any blade that isn't sharpened uniformly. A cutting edge only takes a few millimeters to achieve, so it's not readily apparent just from a glance if a sword is sharp or not. And true, hand protection is a smart move, particularly if you have nicks or rust flakes on the strong as could happen in a real war. However, in effect it mostly amounts to thick gloves on the palm side, something that a cutting edge would go through with ease. Either way it's a no-brainer over (immediate) death if push comes to shove, protection or no. As for prominence, I imagine you're right that it's the larger blades that see the most half-swording, being particularly unwieldy in close proximity. Plus, claymores and other two-handers are main weapons intended for the battlefield, whereas arming swords and other one-handers would have been sidearms and self-defense weapons for civilian use, and paired with a shield when not. By definition, you have two available hands whenever using a two-hander, and half-swording can let you remain viable without having to throw away a weapon you might not be able to get back until the melee is over.

I honestly wondered what was the point of having characters at all in this game. Volition clearly wasnt interested, and they put more effort into the larping section than really anything else and thats not a good thing, because I hated it. I wanted gangsters and a good gangster story like the first 2 games. We just got what they wanted to do, almost like they only did the things that the game's writing barely presents anything about, because they had to. Why else is the DLC barely about anything? Why else are all the characters so flat and generic despite their bragging? Seriously one of the worst written and shallowest games to come out last year and it amazes me how the studio hates their older games so much. But gave us this crap. Glitchy, broken, shallow, falsely advertised and insulting.

2:23:17 This could have been an extremely interesting quest line if it had been done right. Imagine if the boss wanted to prove their smarter and better at business than Marshal and bought small businesses to make money for the Saints that actually did compete with Marshal. Marshal sues them and then does a hostile takeover or buyout or something. Then the quest is more like a sandbox with many different ways of getting your businesses back and taking down Marshal. Like throwing rats in their buildings to bring down property value, stealing shipments, convincing the workers to strike or other methods. Plus, this would explain why The Idols would come after you as you'd be abusing small businesses for your own personal gain which they would be against. So, you'd have missions with regular gang warfare along with missions that running in guns blazing wouldn't be the best plan of action. You could even choose to focus on one path. Taking gang territory would force Marshal to bend their knees to you. As your gang would have them surrounded. While becoming a big corporation would lead to you having the most money to hire and equip gang members to take over the gang territory through logistics and finances. Or you could even do a little of both.

I haven't played this game, and it's highly likely I'm never going to. But I love listening to your analysis & fantastic ability to logically reason your arguments. For instance, you defined "nitpick". This is sadly where we're at in an ever growing idiocracy & the current epidemic of narcissism. I also find that I'm constantly attacked for having and expressing an opinion & having to respond with defining "opinion" to those accusing me of "lying" or claiming to have "facts". They don't know what a "lie" is. They don't know what a "fact" is. They don't know what an "opinion" is. And, as with you, they don't know what a "nitpick" is. You touch a lot of things that I'm also passionate about in my own way. For instance, the degradation of entertainment is hugely important. I was a latchkey kid. Movies raised me. That means movies educated me. But the same could apply to music and video games. This is terrifying to consider when we have such a morbidly low quality of entertainment up to and including bad writing and political agendas affecting developing minds. This while narcissism is becoming an epidemic and fewer and fewer are able to sit their emotions aside for rational thought. I heard your call to action on your Fallout 4 analysis. You're right! More people do need to challenge this, and I'm strongly considering joining the effort. I can't even watch the all-female "Ghostbusters". I knew the political BS that was when the commercial's hit. I once covered such a subject in an essay titled: "No Part of This Woman Ever Wanted to be a Super-MAN". Feminine power is it's own sort of power. Women do not have to be over-masculinzed a $$-whoopers to be "powerful" as if masculinity is the only power. Feminism is incredibly misogynistic & arguably sexist the whole way round. Female power used to be written as charming (maybe even beguiling and a bit manipulative), quiet & thoughtful. The reciever of such power never saw it coming. It wasn't the punch to the face. It was the song of the siren. And that's perfectly FINE! Anyway, your criticisms are completely valid, and I appreciate your content as a tether to sanity in an increasingly lobotomized world.
