I honestly think I would love Gohan more if they don't milk his "the most potential stuff" I dislike that the person who become the strongest non fused characther in Buu Saga is the one who slacked of for 7 years straight. I disliked that they make Gohan in league or even stronger than Goku and Vegeta even after all the training in Beerus planet just because he taught his master died "again" in SuperHero. God ki training should had close the potential between full saiyan and half breed saiyan in my opinion. I like when it with Cell because he actually train with Goku instead of sitting on his ass while some Old wizard unlock his potential to no diff every opponent during that arc instead

In terms of writing thats probably the weakest way you could have probably ended that arc. Honestly the ultimate form itself is probably the worst thing toriyama ever wrote and I think he realized that which is why he wrote it out so quickly.

The laziest thing that a story can do is make a character stronger “because”. Dragon Ball’s insistence that Gohan somehow has more hidden potential than any other character for some reason, coupled with the story’s habit of randomly power-boosting him to the same levels of characters who dedicate all of their time to training, makes him the undisputed worst character in Dragon Ball. In a story that focuses on characters growing as people and training to become the strongest fighter, Gohan instead proves that none of it matters. Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo could train every day for years, and Gohan will still somehow be on their level despite never even leaving his desk.

It seems like Toriyama was more of a creative writer rather than an indepth writer prefering the most crazy and wacky outcome over the more logical one. I think Vegito and Great Saiyaman are good examples. Not really focusing on the lore or deeper meanings, but just having fun with it..

The Buu saga was asspull after asspull with no effective buildup for each. • Ultimate Gohan: no buildup, yet Gohan somehow becomes the strongest fighter • SSJ3 Goku: at least Goku trained for it, but there was no buildup in the narrative itself. I would've preferred it if Goku hinted at himself unlocking a greater level of power during his fight with Vegeta, then showing it off against Buu. • Potara: the earrings were retroactively turned into a fusion technique so Goku and Vegeta could have a narratively satisfying way to handle Buu. There was no indication that the Potara earrings could fuse two people until it was brought up right before they fused.

Gohan didn’t get his father killed in the cell games, first of all Goku gave cell a senzu like a dumbass, he then teleports cell to king Kai’s and starts blabbering with Kai for about ten seconds instead of just teleporting back with Kai, Bubbles and Gregory. He then refuses to get wished back because he want a to have fun in the otherworld. Don’t blame Goku’s selfish decisions on Gohan

I vividly remember when Z released. Everyone was happy for Goku and Chi Chi finally having a kid after the whole OG King Ox arc. But we all knew Gohan wouldn't be half the fighter (no pun intended) his dad is. Gohan is a nerdy family man that fights when he has no choice. Goku is a warrior class full blooded Saiyan.

I am a Gohan fan myself, and although I like Gohan being the strong, cool character that he is at times, I am ok with him staying with his family and if that makes him weaker, then so be it. I'm fine with that because that really feels like it fits with his character. Gohan is just way too human. Gohan was born on earth and raised in human customs and things like that, so he will definitely be more human, and it shows that when he is portrayed as weaker and with his family, because that's what he wants. He wants to be with his family. He wants to be a dad and be there for, and with his daughter as she grows up, he wants things that most other people want. It's like that little instance in the Goku Black Arc where Future Trunks met Adult Gohan and his family and he was sad that he didn't have that, because as cool as they are in fighting and gaining more and more power and just being cool and bad-@$$ you have to remember that they are still people. They have wants and desires and other things, because from their perspective, Gohan and Future Trunks, you always have to fight, you always have to struggle, you lose things and it's hard to just go on, they have losses and life is hard and they wish for their lives to get better. Looking at it that way and in that constantly fighting lifestyle there is barely any peace, if any, and you don't have time for yourself or your family, and you will have a lot of pressure on you and you will be struggling all of the time and so many things where you will feel overwhelmed, and you think about your family, and that things could be better and wishing that it wasn't this way and that things were different, having all this weight on your shoulders and just to a point where you can't be with your family and all of you cannot find really any real happiness if you're not there, and then it just gets to a point where you are overwhelmed and it feels like you want to quit, like you are sick and tired, you're tired of being sick, you are sick of being tired. That is what this would most likely do, maybe not everyone, but it is that way with Future Trunks and with Gohan, because of the pacifist that he is I feel like this is how he will be. That is why I am ok with Gohan being weaker and being with his family and things like that because that portrays his character very well, because that is literally who Gohan is, even in Dragon Ball Z when he was taken by Raditz and Raditz talked about him being born for battle and that he could have been a great fighter, but he said that he didn't want to fight, or when Goku made him fight Cell, Gohan didn't really want to fight either, even though he got more powerful because before he turned Super Saiyan 2 he was literally crying in his battle with Cell because he didn't want what was happening. It actually is alined with Gohan's character and who Gohan is as a person, because I am not going to lie, I was one of those people who, when I saw teen Gohan in the Buu Saga I was like everyone else in thinking, "This isn't my Gohan!" Or "They ruined Gohan!" And things like that, but as I said from looking back on Dragon Ball Z and everything, when he is not angry, through everything from Raditz and Cell and everything Gohan was not about that life he has a soft nature and that is who he is and who he has been during his whole life even in the Buu Saga. It actually alines with Gohan's character and that is why I love him, because it shows that he is different from Goku and Vegeta and he is a more down to Earth, human, individual, who is just living and trying to achieve happiness and other things in life, and that is what makes him a great character in my opinion, not his power, just his personality and characteristics of a good man who shows that even though he has the power he is still a person, not a fighter, well he is a fighter, but what I mean is... he is not a warrior per say. He is not going to go out there and seek battle like Goku or Vegeta, nor is he doing to drop everything just to fight. It gives you that human, peace loving side to Dragon Ball with Gohan. Now, I am not pushing for Gohan to be weaker. I am not doing that at all. Would I want Gohan to become stronger? Absolutely! I love Gohan. I love when he is strong and bad-@$$, and I wish that he would balance work, family, and training and become strong and relevant again. I am just saying that if they do make Gohan weaker, then I would not be mad about that because that is who Gohan is, and it fits with his character. That is what I think about Gohan. Goku and Vegeta doesn't have as much potential as Gohan, Broly, and Frieza but they training and work so hard that they break their limits everytime making them able to keep up with fighters who have great potentials to achieve powers faster than them. Toriyama really wanted to hammer in what Goku said at the beginning of the Saiyan saga "Even a low class, if he trains hard enough, can beat the elite.". Gohan got so cocky he attained a new level of power first that he stopped training, and he paid the price for it BIG TIME. Had he not gotten ignorant and cuntinued training he'd might have surpassed even Goku, but alas his thought process turned just like Vegeta's before he got humbled

TL;DR - plot convenience. He was forced to stop training so there could be a Buu saga, then forced to fight the only being in the universe at that time he could lose to when he got his power back, and then removed from the plot so the rest of the arc could happen because he was then too strong. Why? Easy: Toriyama allowed him to be himself between Cell and the Buu saga, a period where there were 0 threats... and then made the story have him go up against the strongest character in the series (up to that point, with only 2 stronger - Buuhan and Vegito) that required the strongest fusion at that time to take down. He was forced to not catch the earring by Toriyama because the resulting fusion could have been even stronger than Vegito (only weaker if you assume rivalry bonus and whatnot being MASSIVE), making the Buutenks/colo fight not even mildly interesting. He was then sidelined by Toriyama for the rest of the arc because he was too powerful to bring into the fight against Kid since he would have taken Kid down without a sweat. As to his power early on in the arc, if he would have trained, there wouldn't have been an arc. He would have 1-tapped every enemy they came across and evaporated Buu's container.

8:18 No chance. Saying Buutenk's energy ball was enough to destroy the Earth isn't saying much when their power levels are so high they could destroy the Earth several times over with ease. Remember, SPCell charged up a Kamehameha that could have destroyed the Earth twice over if Gohan didn't stop him, and charging that blast didn't cost Cell anything. He didn't break a sweat until Pre-teen Gohan started resisting and he had to pour more energy into it. Back to Buutenks, I don't think he knew Gohan had been healed by Dende, so he figured this would have been enough to take Gohan out. But no chance. If Gohan 'was' back to full fighting capabilities, he'd have done more than tank it; he could have just knocked it back or something. If Buutenks went all out, that might be a different story, but he wasn't/didn't. If Gohan 'was' back to full fighting capabilities, he's only lacking energy. A beam struggle would be against him, but in a fight or to push back ki attacks, Gohan is evenly matched with Buutenks. But yeah, I do agree that Gohan wouldn't have been able to beat Buuccolo's mind games. Eventually, it would be exactly the same outcome and Gohan would get absorbed. With all that said though, it could have been such a worthy redemption arc for Gohan in DBS. But no, instead we got Gohan yet again neglecting his training and yet again character regression to being cocky again when he got Beast mode. It took Piccolo stopping pretending that he was dead to yell at Gohan to finish the fight asap, even though I feel Beast Gohan still could have beaten Cell MAX even without exploiting the off switch in his head. Though, this was the same Cell form that blew himself up, so I think Piccolo was right. If I had it my way, Gohan can only use his Ultimate form, because that was canon until Toriyama forgot about Gohan's Ultimate form. I would make it so Gohan trained with Piccolo a LOT sooner than the start of the Universe Survival arc. Probably right after U6 vs U7 filler. That would give Gohan all of Goku Black/Zamasu arc and that other filler arc to both regain his fighting instincts AND reach the ceiling of his Ultimate form. He can state that he's trying to find his own power here and say he's straying from his Saiyan lineage because he knows how cocky he gets due to his lust for battle. But then, in the ToP, he embraces his Saiyan pride and the subsequent lust for Battle, and in doing so he is able to go Super Saiyan, multiplying his Ultimate form. This allows him to eliminate Dyspo and briefly put up a fight with Destroyer Toppo before he eliminates Gohan. (Yes, I'd keep Goku's fight with Kefla because that Kamehameha was f*ckin' sweet!) Plug in that if Gohan wasn't so thirsty for battle, he could have teamed up with Frieza and Vegeta to take Destroyer Toppo out. After the ToP, Gohan seems to go back to studying, but in reality he's been trying to figure out if he wants to use his Ultimate form or rely on his Saiyan side. Then, while fighting Cell MAX, Gohan taps into SS2 again, but it's not enough. Piccolo steps in to save Gohan, and Gohan finally comes to a realization. His indecisiveness is putting the people he cares about in jeopardy. Gohan decides to use ALL of his powers, that he doesn't need to decide between his Ultimate form and Super Saiyan, so he combines the two to get Beast, a culmination of his entire character, both his desire to protect the ones he loves, and his Saiyan pride and lust for battle. And instead of Piccolo once again telling Gohan to finish it asap, Gohan remembers what Cell can do once backed into a corner, and he himself decides to finish it immediately to protect the Earth. Voila, character redemption arc fulfilled, and Beast doesn't seem to be as much of an asspull now, and ToP Ultimate Gohan isn't magically God tier all of a sudden. You can claim I have the power of hindsight, but c'mon. Gohan FINALLY getting a decent character arc was a LONG time coming. It didn't take hindsight to come up with a way to fix his character flaw from the Z era.

I think its a cop-out regarding Gohan reached his full potential as the Saiyans ability to increase power after recovering is essentially an evolution trait embedded in their DNA. Realistically unless death occurred, all other forms of exhaustion and injury leads to increased power.

I do like the idea that Ultimate didn’t include any SSJ effects, emphasizing the Earth part of Gohan’s hybrid (after all it was a mixture of Earth & SJ genes that gave Gohan his potential) even if it didn’t travel well to some fans (there are a lot of less intelligent viewers who thought he fought Buu without any power ups). It’s sad that it went nowhere. I could see that Toriyama wasn’t happy with turning Gohan into Goku 2.0 without any of Gohan’s characteristics. Doesn’t excuse him throwing him under the bus. I do stand that the ToP was the redemption of the Ultimate Gohan in Kamesennin Gi & Kamisama Shirt & Boots form. Gohan having the power but the intelligence & objectivity to back up his power as well as emphasizing his characteristic empathy (the locket) and humility (his apology to Piccolo during the fight with the Nanekians). His sacrifice with Dyspo is the fulfilled coda to how he went out in the Buu Atc.

Ultimate gohan is basically the lesson super wants to shove down our throats in training the base form to a level you don't need super saiyan. Gohan cheated his way there. Goku basically got this with UI allowing his base super and god for s an extra boost so in a way super nanaged to find a better way to use this system But ultimate is still better than god that got thrown away almost immediately

Ultimate Gohan is WAY worse than anything you can possibly say for Beast. He: - loses his protagonism and agency in the saga HE kicks off and introduces - Earns the transformation through a ritual (fine) but doesn’t actually correct his character flaw of slacking off. If anything he is REWARDED for doing so. - Is for whatever reason reversed into being a cocky character when he’s strong. This is Toriyama forgetting his own character here, because Gohan only got cocky against Cell as he was personally invested in “punishing” Cell for his deeds. It’s a cockiness that manifested from an immature and self serving form of justice. Ultimate Gohan being cocky makes 0 sense, as he SAW HIS COCKINESS COST HIS DAD HIS LIFE AND HAD TO LIVE YEARS WITH HIM GONE 😭😭😭 this is an awful case of the narrative making Gohan’s character flaws be misinterpreted as *character traits* and this problem persists until Super largely fixes his character and has him slowly train to regain his battle senses.

Them having a major win doesn't mean it's not still the Goku show. And they could really make things easier if they start bring multiple strong major threat opponents in the story at once in the same arc to have more than one fight going on to satisfy everyone. Because think about, now we have beast Gohan, orange Piccolo, and Broly on the team. One major enemy fighting all 5 of those strong beings at once will be crazy unless it's a angel or being strong as Beerus or close. Two or three enemies would make sense at this point. If we're lucky we could possibly see everyone get a 1v1 with their own individual fight to save the cosmos.

Ultimate Gohan failed because of his inefficient training. He never tried to master ss2. He didn’t want to push himself or update his arsenal of techniques. The training he had with his brother, the fights he had with Dabura and fat Buu, plus the z sword training, doesn’t compare to what Goku and Vegeta did during the time skip. A random, unearned power up doesn’t fix what Gohan needed.

The Z fighters have a line up of GOKU, VEGETA, GOHAN, PICCOLO, AND BROLY Imagine we get 3 major threats in one arc rather than just ONE BIG BAD to defeat the Z fighters. They should start bringing more enemies to team up on the Z fighters in the same ARC because the Z fighters line up to protect the universe is pretty overkill for any evil threat. It could open up so many possibilities. I just couldn't imagine Frieza by himself beating all 5 even with this black form unless its that much stronger than everyone.

Doofus Super Buu? Not only is Super Buu extremely powerful, but he outplayed everyone (though mostly because even before he absorbed Piccolo he tended to act much stupider than he actually was) and it wasn't just a basic case of Super Buu outsmarting them or getting lucky, he covertly came up several plans to become the strongest in the universe and with every plan he came up with, he thought of several back-up plans as well. He also manipulated many of the heroes into making himself seem like less of a threat and when the opportunity presented itself from the heroes being arrogant, he would not only take advantage of it but also made sure that there were some contingency plans if things were to go against him. And it worked like a charm because he technically never loses a battle. And any battle that it seems like he is losing, he's losing on purpose because it's all a part of his plan. It took the Story-Breaker Power of Vegito just to slow him down. Also, while it's not really elaborated upon, he was able to accurately calculate the entire planet's population just by walking around the Lookout for a minute and then mentally sort through billions of unique ki signatures in order to only kill who he wanted to. It's later revealed that in this form Buu has two gods absorbed, who presumably add a ton of mystical and universal knowledge (though Super Buu never uses it).

The problem with gohan is gohan. Even in the cell saga it took goku to back gohan to finish cell. Gohan shouldve had his own emotional moment after all thise deaths and that shouldve changed gohan forever. He seen his dad Sagrada his life for everyone. No one after that day should have to get beat to extinction in order for gohan to do something. Like piccolo did agaisnt cell max. It's like he's not maturing. It varies, but as far as the manga officially confirmed with Super, Goku and Vegeta don't receive Zenkai boosts, though some how Goku Black is able to. I personally subscribe to the idea that Zenakai are a failsafe in a Saiyan's genetics that brings a Saiyan's power closer and closer to the Super Saiyan threshold, once it's achieved Zenkai begins to yield diminishing returns (Around when Super Saiyan popped up for characters there really was no talk of characters or atleast the good guys becoming stronger from nearly dying.) So basically Cell and Goku black are the only one's post Namek who were known to still get Zenakai's. One's a genetic abomination, and another hijacked a Saiyan's body, both are outliers. Though from Super onwards, Zenkai has sort of been replaced from a post-battle healing power up, to some sort of adapting battle sense where the Saiyan adapts and rises in power mid-battle. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and Broly as showcased that. Though to be honest that isn't entirely Saiyan exclusive as other 'prodigy' characters also adapt in battle like Hit.

Gohan was always a pretty mid character. Being a timid crybaby character that hides monstrous power was interesting for a bit but got less interesting as he got older. Toriyama made the right choice to write that out when he became a young adult.
