There weren't many British people who played a prominent role in India's independence. Two of the more prominent people who played an important role that comes to the mind are, A.O. Hume, who was a founding member of Indian National Congress, which played a major role in our freedom struggle, and the other is Annie Besant who served as the president of INC and she was very vocal about only Indians ruling over India and under her term INC's goal changed to self rule from their earlier position of having a greater autonomy under British rule. P.S. In both the WWs, India was the biggest contributor in terms of manpower, money, and foods and other resources, for the British cause on the false pretext of discussing independence from the raj after the wars. Millions of Indians served in both the wars in all of the theatres, such as Europe, Africa, middle East. In fact, it was Indians who defeated the undefeated Japanese Army in WW2 and changed the scenario in the Eastern theatre.

now to answer what u asked.. punjabi is anyone who is living in punjab (indian or pakistani Punjab state) Sikh is religion so a sikh living in america is a Sikh but technically not a punjabi (he/she may be followinh cultural things) its similar to Italians in America. They are american and christian (most of them) but technically they are not italian.. There are not many turbaned sikh actors. So diljit dosanjh is only one for now. He never take off his turban for roles..so he most of times play Sikh guy in movie There are other sikh actors but they hjad hair cuts so they dont wear turban (religiously speaking anyone who cuts hair cant be called a sikh but then not everyone follows the religion completely)

If you are a Sikh male, you probably most likely would have a turban, though some choose to cut their hair for various reasons, either political or philosophical. If you have a turban or choose not to cut your hair, it's a life-long commitment and hence you can't not wear a turban or leave your hair open (unless you are bathing or grooming or sleeping). Hence, you can't do non-Sikh roles if you have a turban. Non-sikhs can do Sikh roles, but many have come under criticism for their incorrect portrayal at times. A Sikh brother may be able to correct me or elaborate on specific aspects better. Over to them. Punjab: Pun as in 'pun' and not 'poon'. Just FYI.

Pardon me but my knowledge says the Sikhs following the 5 rules in life kesh(heir), kripaan(dagger) kangi (comb), kaccha(shorts) & kasha (bracelet). This Sikhism was a creation of time when india was in principalities so one son was nominated by every hindu community to follow the rules by the gurus (teacher) and train to fight invasion from the west into india (Punjab region). Later the teachings had many followers due to liberal, giving working dedicated outlook etc preached by the 10 Sikhs gurus. Accordingly there are other Sikhs communities related to business etc. Their biggest positive is their teachings of equality and seva (duty) ......... please correct me if I'm wrong.

But we do always wear it whenever we are not inside of our own home. And yes, it's mandatory for a sikh to wear a turban. Basically the sikh God has given us a turban in a form of a "crown". That is why the "subedar" which means the main leader of that particular group said that he cant hit him on his turban cuz it's not just a turban it's a crown given to us by our god.

Also Sister nivedita(Margaret Elizabeth Noble) who was a teacher, author, social activist, school founder and disciple of Swami Vivekananda.During the plague epidemic in Calcutta in 1899, Nivedita nursed and took care of the poor patients. She also made active contribution in the field of Indian Nationalism.

Few Notable foreigners who played a significant part in Indian Independance: 1. Allan Octavian Hume - the founder of the Indian National Congress party later led by Gandhi, Nehru et al 2. Sister Nivedita - Scots-Irish student of Swami Vivekananda 3. Annie Besant - supporting both Irish and Indian Independance; later an important member of the Indian National Congress 4. Edwin Montagau - who in Aug 1917 advocated in Parliament "increasing association of Indians in every branch of the administration and the gradual development of self-governing institutions with a view to the progressive realization of responsible government in India as an integral part of the British Empire." Again, there WERE some conscientious officers who wrote to Churchill about how people were dying (The man-made Bengal Famine of 1943 famine killed 1.5 million people already suffering from poverty and impoverishment due to a failed monsoon) due to his written militant policy of diverting essential supplies from Bengal to the British soldiers in WW2, but Churchill wrote back noting in the margins "Why hasn't Gandhi died yet?" So yeah, there were good Brits as well but most of those in power were.....

Tom Alter, British ethnicity but he chose to live in India and acted in various Bollywood movies and TV series. He was very fluent in Hindi, Urdu and English. You should check his work out. Bob Christo, the foreigner guy who has worked with Amitabh Bachan in older movies was a well known villain in Bollywood cinema. The famous dialogue of Amitabh Bachaan, "hum jahan khade hote hain line wahan se shuru hoti hai", which roughly translates to in english, "Queue begins from where I stand". This dialogue was actually from Bob Christo who asked Amitabh to use it. There are several British and foreign nations who were supporting India and they could see writing on walls of British government atrocities on people.

Answer to Rick's question, One westerner who was and is still revered by many Indians is Miss Annie Beasant, she was one of the freedom fighters. She presided over Indian National Congress sessions, and she started the Home Rule Movement. When she was arrested in 1916, riots and protest against the government forced Britishers to release her. She spent her entire life for the cause of India's independence. P. S. She was Irish!

Definitely watch 'Kalapani'. Excellent film. It has an English lawyer advocating for the Indians jailed at the infamous Kalapani (Blackwaters) central jail. The film features great acting by Indian actors. Some cringe worthy portrayal of British actors. Mix of tones. Wonderful set pieces and production value done on a minuscule budget.

By the end of the war the British Army had fielded 3,820,000 men. In comparison, almost 1,300,000 Indian men had volunteered for service by 1918. Over one million Indian troops served overseas during the war. The first Indian soldiers arrived in Marseilles on 30 September 1914, only six weeks after the declaration of war. Remember, this is in the days when all militaries world wide still used mules and horses and steam ships. It took several weeks aboard a steam ship cutting through the Suez canal to get there from India. In total, at least 74,187 Indian soldiers died in World War I.

The one English person that I can remember who was very active in Indian freedom movement was Anne Besant. A British writer, Human/ Woman rights activist, played a key role in the establishment of Benaras Hindu University.

There were some British people who directly or indirectly helped the Indian society to reform and break out of superstitious practices and educating the people. For example in West Bengal, Sir Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, a poet, teacher and founder of Young Bengal Society, famous social worker and educator of 20th Century. There are many who helped the society to reform at that time. Such as Lord William Bentinck helped Rammohon Roy by passing the law which abolished the infamous ritual or sacrificing widows along with their dead husband.
