Fauna just said "your friends are cool people too, I'm not really all that special so you shouldn't idolize me and ignore your real friends in favor of me" This is literally the sanest way to answer that question. That was a clear bait question that she handled very well; it wasn't "lol u are all my playthings" or "I see you ALL as my DEAREST FRIENDS," both of which are harmful sentiments. The best way to deal with the trolls is to ignore them, the second best way is to just shut them down. Its great for her to clarify that's cool to be fans and she does enjoy having us as her fans but ultimately the boundaries are there for a reason and a friendship is just not going to happen. She definitely has my respect for being a upfront streamer in that regard, many people both watching streamers and those who stream need that lesson drilled into their head.

@@Wretchedness1609 Nobody owe you friendship because you give them money, that's f*cked up. Like she said it's normal to think you want to be friend. But people need to understand why those boundaries exists. Sure, from what you see you can tell you'd probably get along with the person you watch, but beside the fact that they don't know you, they want to be able to separate work and private life. Knowing you are from their community feel like you represent the community and can cause many problems, may it come from the viewer or the streamer. Plus, suppose you want to befriend your viewers, you can't be friends with every viewer that wishes to be your friend. How do you choose who you will befriend? The ones that are more insisting? Encouraging this bad behavior. The ones that care about you the most ? As of everything, there should be a limit to the amount of care you put into streamers, passing that limit isn't healthy, you can't encourage that either. Plus viewers would start comparing themselves, they'd be jealousy. A lot of bad things that aren't worth it when there are plenty of better ways to make friends. Albeit, it still can create feeling of frustration, wanting to share with them as much is they share with us the viewer, but it's simply not possible as a viewer because of the numbers and all the other reasons.

As someone accurately pointed out during this answer live, she's was also showing her meme knowledge there, it was particularly funny for the ones who know 😄 Unfortunately, most people missed the reference, but she directly quoted the Ludwig video that became a meme 2 years ago (1.1M views now), titled "I am not your friend", which is both a comedy sketch and an excellent clarification about his relation with his fanbase. With that context, it was both an appropriate setting of boundaries _and_ a funny meme reference by Fauna.

I've thought of this before multiple times. I like Fauna. I think she's funny and cute. I admit, I've wondered what it would be like to be friends with some of the people I watch, but also I acknowledge that they're people too. I do *care* about them. I don't like seeing them sad about things, but I also tend to feel that way about most people. I do think it's a slippery slope to confuse "I want to support them" with "I want to be friends". This is something that's far too complicated to fit into a KZbin comment.
@Nothingseen
@Nothingseen Жыл бұрын
Nah, it makes sense. Streaming is a very strange thing, as the appeal is literally getting to know someone. They're not your friend, but it's very hard for you to avoid feeling attached to them, cause you know them. Vtubing helps immensely, because you are only seeing an avatar and don't do things like "learn their room layout" and "notice when they get a haircut," things that will happen with camera-based stuff. But you still learn what they like, what they don't, things about their past, stories about their parents... you learn in-jokes and references, they teach you things and they learn things from the chat. Of course you like them. Of course you want them to be happy. Of course you can imagine being their bud. However, they cannot have the same relationship with you. Unless you find a streamer where they have literally only you as their audience, it's a one-way intimacy. They're forced to see the chat as a gestalt identity, because there's just... too many things on screen flying past to think of it any other way. Just like how anyone doing any performance sees their audience as one being, rather than seeing them as a bunch of different people. So when you're watching a streamer, you're not actually spending time with a friend. Unless you and your buddies are all watching together. This is at the core of what Fauna said; "don't prioritize or idolize me, cherish your real-life relationships." Watching Fauna isn't cultivating a relationship, it's watching an entertainer. Even though it's a new, different, and oddly intimate form of entertainment, it's still entertainment. Just cause watching Council play uno feels like you're playing a game with your real good buddies, you're not. THEY are, YOU aren't. Just remember that and you'll be fine.

@@Nothingseen Great comment, hammer right to the nail. Its fine to build up a empathic relationship with streamers because yeah, you do want what's best for them but it's not going to be the same as a relationship you can build with people IRL or even online on a more personal basis (like say being fellow fans of Fauna and getting to know each other a bit BTS if people are respectful about privacy).
@PyraXadon
@PyraXadon Жыл бұрын
The way I see it, supporting these streamers either financially or boosting their viewership count because you like them/find them entertaining is perfectly fine. It's when the relationship in question goes too far and one party struggles to maintain a proper quality of life as a result. Just knowing and understanding that you're not friends with the streamer but you enjoy their content/you're empathetic of their well being is in my eyes, a good start to recognizing and understanding your boundaries as an audience member. I'd hate for someone to feel bad for thinking that caring for the streamer's well being is being 'in too deep'. Humans are social creatures; caring for one another is built into our biology. Parasociality as a concept has always been around thanks to the advent of celebrities and media personalities. We often think that a parasocial relationship is a bad thing because of the extreme lengths possible, but in reality, the definition is just a one sided relationship where one party doesn't know the other exists.

I didn't even really start watching streamers until the end of the 2021 and saw this phenomenon happen in real time that went to unfortunate and damaging situations with some streamers - since parasocial became a buzzword on twitch - and read up what happened with a lot of vtubers especially ones who graduated due to unhealthy situations involving their audiences that became real problems for the actual person behind the vTuber character. I feel like streamers are like acquaintances I really like. I like our boundaries. I don't want to know how they look or who they are beyond our connection as streamer and viewer. It's another type of social role amongst the ones we already have--such as teacher and student, or coworkers--which come with a set of rules these social roles best operate by. I think Fauna is an exceptional streamer because she's able to Present to us such a sweet, wholesome, and entertaining experience while genuinely being herself and a good human person. Of course it's not her whole self, but we hardly ever get that with people in our lives and we shouldn't try to.

Acquaintances I think is the perfect way to describe it. We (being chat/the audience) and the streamer usually have chummy/cordial interactions during stream but it doesn't usually go much deeper than some slight personal business. I view my "relationship" with Fauna and other streamers/KZbinrs the same way I view many of my coworkers: I like being around them, interacting and socializing with them by making jokes and small talk, but we don't get *too* personal and we only see each other at work. I still respect them and have empathy for them as fellow people, even if we aren't particularly close friends. And that's how I also see streamers/KZbinrs.

I gotta say, I don't really understand why some people were genuinely angry at Fauna for saying this. And, let me be clear, I am completely friendless irl. I am the exact kind of dude Fauna was trying to speak to with this. But that being said, at no point have I been interested in pretending like Fauna is my friend. I just like her as an entertainer, and her streams are fun. Idk, seems like a non-issue to me.

I think something a lot of people forget about is the fact that we only see these people when the cameras are rolling, when they’re in their element. When you see your friends doing something they love and/or are really good at, doesn’t it make you feel happy? Doesn’t it make you feel good- proud, even- to be their friend? And being a friend is so much more than hanging out with the “good side” of a person. Being a friend means supporting each other during your worst and building each other up when times get rough. Being a friend means sticking with each other through thick and thin. Laughing with each other, goofing around with each other, being yourself with each other, but also crying with each other, getting serious with each other, letting your true emotions show to each other. Now, I’m not saying that you aren’t capable of doing these things. Quite the contrary, in fact: I’m sure many people reading this comment are great friends. What I’m saying is that being a content creator and viewer and being friends are two very different types of relationships, and it’s important to remember the value you have with the people you already know. Your friends love you deeply, even if you don’t realize it, and maybe even more than you realize, and that bond is something that you should always remember and appreciate, no matter what

I think some people really went off the rails after she said this. For me, someone streaming to thousands of people online simply can not be friends with viewers like that, even if you set aside gender difference, which can make things even more odd. Not with my definition of a "friend" anyway. Fauna is 100% right, the people around you will always be better as friends. Not in the clip is also her giving great advice on socializing and making actual friends. This was an odd "serious" Sakasandayo clip with no edits or voice warbles, hope you're good too bro.

@@Flugmorph In the vtuber scene, it isn't abnormal to see males get attached to a female vtuber (goes for regular "flesh streamers" too I suppose). That means when the streamer hits people with the "not a friend" line, it's likely to sting more for the opposite gender. But my point was, that shouldn't matter because in the end, the streamer still shouldn't be considered a "friend".

I agree with this message for the most part. There are times when "a" singular viewer can become friends with a streamer they enjoy. It happens quite often not just an RPR with Towa kinda thing. While that is a viewer befriending their favorite streamer, they are still both in the same industry and that happens all the time as well. You also can't assume just because Streamers Collab that they are automatically friends IRL. I'm sure even in Hololive there are some members that actually don't get along with each other. Maybe not in a hateful way, like they can't stand this member, but in a way were they are indifferent to their activities and what they are up to. I have a couple streamers that I followed and watched I have become good friends with. Although not even close to the size of community Hololivers get. Still we can talk to each other about things happening in our life off-stream and such. But Generally no, you should never try to force to expect friendship with a streamer. On the other hand I disagree with one point. Friends Closer is better. Most of my 'friends' that I had locally have been trash, backstabbers, or otherwise. All of my friends are online now-a-days and we keep up with each other pretty much all the time. With things like discord it's so easy to be friends with pretty much anyone. As long as you can share common interests or something and actually tolerate each other. Granted this could absolutely change if your in the presence of said person for extended periods of time , but really that could be true of anyone. Either way, regardless of who/what caused her to say this message, it is something that still needs be be said every and now and then to remind people about it. I think this is like the 5th Member between the branches that have said this directly (there could be many more just never translated or up in the algorithm).

Feels like "Parasocial Relationships" should be thought in school these days. The perils of wanting to take ones fandom into something more intimate is rarely an isolated feeling and, with people who have millions of fans, could span the tens of thousands. Hollywood stars have had nearly a century of history with stalkers and death threats from disillusioned stalkers. The implications are terrifying to the person on the other side i.e. the talent, regardless of how well meaning you , as a singular actor in this relationship, might feel.

the thing is that "parasosocial relationships" (or "interactions", as its actually called) encompasses way more than the examples you are talking about. if you ever felt bad for a character in a piece of media, or cried because they died, thats a parasocial interaction. many of them are helpful too, teaching us certain lessons or inspiring us to work towards a certain goal, etc. its a complicated field and having someone not qualified lecture on it could cause way more harm than good.

If that's the case then setting the boundaries helps filters out those who are...well disillusioned, she's getting some heat now from trolls and whatnot and that's to be expected its the internet but that will pass in time and overall it seems like a vast majority of her saplings agree with her, In the long run this is probably for the best.

I genuinely didnt expect people to try and make a big deal over this whole segment. (Although i didnt really see the text of the superchat) Its good that Fauna made it clear for those that couldnt already tell, though. I completely understand the desire to be friends with content creators, but its almost never sunshine and rainbows. I speak from experience on this one.

Honestly, I think it's important people realize this. It's impossible for them to be friends with everyone of us and give equal attention to each relationship. There's also just a unequal or power difference in the relationship that works against it. As a viewer, you learn more about the entertainer than they learn about you, if at all. It can be difficult to realize this because you spend a lot of time with them and you see them but that's mainly your brain tricking you into thinking you have a closer relationship than you actually do. Understandably, this is more common with people who are emotionally underdeveloped, have trauma, or are just lonely. It's why I don't call them my waifus (not sure if I even call any of them my oshis) because I know I'd start to get more attached than I should. We should keep healthy relationship boundaries with entertainers and realize they can't be everybody's friends. It's unfair to them and yourself to expect that

To be honest, if I was treated as more than just another fan, I'd be the one uncomfortable. The system works perfectly as is. The girls (and boys now that we have Tempus and Holostars is becoming more mainstream) can stay the singers and artists and entertainers, we can stay the listeners, and all will be good. Yes, I know the context with the guy that sent this supa. No, it doesn't invalidate the message.

yeah, i greatly enjoy being a "sapling" (and part of the amorphous blobs that are several other streamers communities), being treated as an individual on stream would feel really weird. in the end they dont know me and i dont really know any of the streamers either, except what they decide to show of themselves.

Absolutely. Honestly, if Fauna treated saplings as anything more than viewers/fans I probably wouldn't be watching her. She can be wholesome and funny with people but it never goes too far, there have already been plenty of moments where she reinforced this viewer/streamer relationship before too, even if it maybe wasn't as directly as this one (or maybe it was just the context of the SC that made this one different). I didn't even find out some people were talking about this negatively until later by chance, when I was watching it I didn't really think much of it and thinking about it more only makes me feel more comfortable and confident in being her fan and supporting her.

@@srkares Well, it's not _that_ weird if you, for example, post consistently funny or insightful stuff in chat, or are a good clipper (especially for smaller streamers). As long as it doesn't go beyond "this fan on my chat is pretty alright", I'm on board.

@@DinnerForkTongue yeah, i mean most streamers recognize the names of their regulars and possibly certain things about them. but yeah, thats about as far as it goes. if a streamer would constantly single out a specific person in chat, positively or negatively, it would get real awkward for everyone involved real quick.

There was a channel I commended on for some time and I was getting hearted and replied on basically every one. I checked the comment section to see if it was everyone because some channels are just like that and it wasn’t. My comments weren’t partially deep or interesting so no idea why they were compelled to reply to each of them. It freaked me out and I stopped commenting. Came back like a month later with comments and now a normal channel commenter relationship is restored where it feels like they aren’t paying attention to me. It really was, “this is feeling too parasocial for me.”

i was expecting to see this clip and have it hit me like a truck, because ive been hearing abt this clip. but now that i've watched it, i dont really understand why people were so upset by this. this was genuine, wise and amazing advice tbh. imma be honest, i am sort of obsessed with fauna a little bit, but now that i realise it, im probably a lot more sane about her than other saplings, seeing as how i am not upset with this at all. she's very good at being real and honest when she needs to be, and it wasn't really a harsh or mood-killing way to do it either. i appreciate fauna for speaking about this, and i very much agree with her here.
