In a way the original 4 games were definitely a precursor to Fire Emblem Awakening. Just imagine it being closer to that but the romances and bonding system. Take for instance the tactical system when you have the characters next to each other.

@@vedocorban Its still a great game, the combat actually forms a relatively small part of the game and it is completely servicable, if not good fun. If the other two descriptors interest you, you should give it a try regardless.

The adversative conjunction "even though" used to mention the "enticing designs" in oposition to the "genuine enjoyment of each character" gives the "enticing designs" a decidedly negative conotation, as in the characters being enjoyable despite their designs. I don't mean to be pedantic, just trying to explain the reaction from the coment and possibly other people.

For those who don't know about Sakura Wars, Sakura Wars (Sakura Taisen) is a series of JRPGs with Dating Sim and Visual Novel gameplay elements that's been running for 24 Years. In Japan, the series is one of Sega's biggest and most popular franchises. The first Sakura Wars game was released on the SEGA Saturn in 1996 and was followed by five sequels, the fifth game, Sakura Wars 5: So Long My Love (Released in 2005) was the first game in the series to get an English release in 2010, five years after its original Japanese release. After the 2005 release of Sakura Wars 5, the series went on a fourteen-year hiatus until the announcement of Sakura Wars (New Sakura Wars (Shin Sakura Taisen)), the sixth Installment in the Sakura Wars series which serves as a soft reboot to the Series. It's also the second game to be given an official English release. The First Five Games Used a Tactical RPG Battle System while the new game uses an Action RPG Battle System. Outside of the games, The series was adapted into multiple anime series (Six OVA series, Two TV Anime and an Anime movie), multiple light novels, a manga, radio dramas and Live stage shows that's been running since 1997. Fun Fact: The first five Sakura Wars games featured character designs by Kōsuke Fujishima, The Creator of the Oh My Goddess! manga and character designer for eight of Bandai Namco's Tales of games (Including Tales of Phantasia, Zestiria and Berseria). Fun Fact 2: The Active and Real-time Machine System (ARMS) Battle System used from Sakura Wars 3 to 5 would later be the basis for the battle system used in the Valkyria Chronicles series, which is developed by much of the same team.

What worries me more in buying this game is that it's made by the sonic team. When was the last time they made a good 3D sonic game or a sonic game at all? Sonic mania wasn't even done by the "real" team, but more a fangroup.

Actually I would say a closer analogy would be that Valkyria Chronicles is Sega's Advance Wars, and Sakura Wars is Sega's (modern) Fire Emblem.

@@Ivangelion002 I think all three Sakura Taisen, Valkyria Chronicles and Shining Forces are Sega response to Fire Emblem. Each essentially focus on a specific aspect of the SRPG style that FE started (as opposed to Final Fantasy/Tatic Orgre style from Square). Shining Force is the direct response to FE, Sakura expand on the character interaction while Valkyria intended to be a evolution of the warfare gameplay.

Thanks for the detailed review, I may actually pick this one up. I do enjoy heavy story driven games, mainly the Legend of Heroes series, so this sounds like it right up my alley. Not too worried about the combat, I tend to flock to where good writing, character interaction and world building resides.

I also played all the previous 5 main entries and really enjoyed this new entry when I also played it last year in Chinese. I will say that this is my favourite team among the previous 3 teams since I like all the five new female leads, unlike the previous entries where I only like one or maybe two of the characters. Yes, Hatsuho is Best girl! Although a bit disappointed on how they teased on what happened to the previous teams which are making fans wanting a sequel to this new entry.

This game reminds me so much of iDOLM@STER: Xenoglossia. The iDOLM@STER is one of my favorite game series of all time, where you play as a producer who is trying to manage the lives and careers of a group of up and coming pop idols. Xenoglossia was an anime spinoff that threw ALL the idol stuff out the window and turned all of the girls into post apocalyptic mech pilots who are trying to save/destroy what little amount of humanity is left remaining. This is probably the closest we’ll ever get to a Xenoglossia video game. The communication segments is like traditional iDOLM@STER gameplay, while the battle portions are like the fight scenes in Xenoglossia. And once you mentioned that people from Pokémon, Persona, AND One Piece contributed to the creation of this game, it only sold me that much more! I’m very much looking forward to picking this up! Thank you so much for introducing it to me! I’m also always up for supporting SEGA whenever they give us something from one of their other franchises. Here’s hoping reception is positive and that we start to see more revivals of past SEGA franchises make their way into the modern era!

I've read the manga when I was in middle school. They sold them in a book fair and It was the first manga I ever bought. I was never aware of how old the franchise was until I watched the series and the show is different from the books and games. They both told the same story but in a deferent way. I liked the 2020 Sakura game but the only complaint have about the game is the difficulty. It didn't feel like the game was getting harder and it doesn't give you an option like "easy", "normal" or "hard" Too easy in my opinion. However, regardless I'm glad the old franchise is back. But there are so many people who don't know what Sakura Wars is and the older series is too outdated. They should make a reboot or the original series with all the old characters like Sakura Shinguji, Ichiro Ogami, and Kohran Li. Bring the old crew back together again.

Sequel with turn based battle system Blitz from Valkyria Chronicles (the same team who developed older Sakura Wars games and Skies of Arcadia) would be awesome. Only Japanese diehard Sakura Wars fans dont like this game, only because there is no old characters from previous games (except Sumire) and game have diffirent art style.

​@@FL4M3ZEXE The battle system in SSW is not bad, but its very repetive and way too easy, just like musou but ,,without'' any RPG / progression system from Dynasty Warriors. If SEGA want improve this battle system, they are 2 options: - turn sequel into JRPG with Dating Sim just like they did with Persona 3-5 (the most expensive way), - add RPG elements, progression, mech customization, more playable characters (maybe return of old cast from previous games ?) and more special attacks. Turn sequel into Dynasty Warriors clone (medium expensive way). Third way is back to SRPG roots and turn sequel into Valkyria Chronicles clone but with mechs and Dating Sim (medium expensive way). Fourth way is just remove combat section, and turn series into typical Visual Novel / Adventure game with Dating SIm elements. SEGA did that in past with Sakura Wars 3: Mysterious Paris, that game was a spin-off of Sakura Wars 3 and pure VN (the cheapest way for SEGA). What is your opinion about potential sequel ? Improve combat (Dynasty Warriors route), turn into JRPG/Dating Sim hybrid (Persona 3-5 route), return to SRPG roots (Valkyria Chronicles route), or maybe remove combat and make Sakura Wars pure Visual Novel (Sakura Wars 3: Mysterious Paris route)?

@@FL4M3ZEXE I enjoyed the game a lot too, but i also played all previous mainline games, and in my opinion the older games were better. Especially Sakura Wars 3, what a masterpiece. I would give a Sakura Wars PS4 - 8/10. There are some isues: repetive and easy combat, main villain sucks, there is no english dubbing (for me is not isue), many of important dialogues are not dubbed, and ending for me as a fan is bit meh. Game sold not good in west due to no marketing and very bad release date (with Final Fantasy VII Remake, Persona 5 Royal, Trials of Mana Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake). Fortunately game sold ok in Japan - more than 300 000 copies between December 2019 and March 2020, it's similar numbers to Sakura Wars 3 on Dreamcast in Japan and ... better sales than Lost Judgement PS4 + PS5 version in Japan. In Novemeber 2021 Sakura Wars was mentioned in SEGA financial report, and Sakura Wars series sold 1 600 000 copies between December 2019 and November 2021 (2 years). But keep in mind those numbers can be affected by dead mobile game Sakura Revolution, who was downloaded by 1 500 000 people in Japan.

Man I'm tempted to buy this full price, but that bit about replaying the same missions 6 times (I presume a route each girl) really bugs me. Is there anything in the game that makes replaying it worthwhile?

Well there is a New Game + feature, so you don't have to do all the previous heavy lifting again. For me, though replaying the game is about catching all the nuances of the character interactions: learning more little things about them and the story as a whole. And honestly, I really just don't want to leave this world. I love these characters so much: not even just the romance options, but everyone! I would have to say if you just want to play through the game and not worry about replaying every mission each time, if you're going to replay the whole game for each girl anyway, play as the girl you want to romance that playthrough. If you go for Sakura, only do each mission as Sakura and so on. Hopefully you wont get so sick of it that way. I really hope you pick it up, it's a great game!

I actually owned Sakura Wars V (probably still do though I have no idea where it is) but never got around to playing it. It came out 4 years into the life cycle of the PS3 as a PS2 game. It was hard to find, and I think my original PS3 with BC kicked the bucket soon after I got it. That said, after having fun with New Sakura Wars, I'm tempted to find a PS2 to finally play V.

I think it is kind of fun to replay all the missions with different support-characters because they all have very different attacks and ultimate moves.

Awesome review! I was off to buy 13 Sentinels on Amazon and saw Sakura Wars half off with only a few items left. Since I love this franchise and I have the DC Collector box I wanted to make sure it wasn't a dud. the loss of tactical is a bit sad but Kohei Tanaka is amazing (love the Alundra soundtrack!)

This game reminds of me front line evolution. In they took a great strategy game and dumbed down the combat to try to try to sell to the most number of gamers.number And both games seem to be mixed among old time fans.

I finished the game last night. The story and characters, though childish, have a cartoonish sincerity and charm to them that makes them very fun to watch and interact with. The music and voice acting are superb, even if it is not fully voiced. I will definitely replay it at some point to see all choices and scenes. However, the combat system is utterly inexcusable. It is mindblowingly repetitive and simplistic, not even fit for pure action genre, let alone a supposed rpg. What were they (Sega) thinking?!

@@IvanKisaragi i haven’t played much Persona 5(not really into turn based combat) but i enjoyed what i played outside of combat. Sakura Wars is very narrative heavy, a lot of one on one with characters. i’ve only played three combat parts so far but i definitely look forward to the combat in each chapter. i thought the dating sim aspects were pretty cheesy but i’ve never played anything in that realm before. like you’ll be selecting things on the girls to compliment them on and stuff. but there has only been one section like that i’ve played so far, and nothing too bad so far at least to make it too weird.

I love a good jrpg with dating aspects in it. While combat is generic and easy, it's how you interact with others where the meat of the game is. Each romance you choose is well written and the game makes it work. I even learned how to play koi koi in this game. Truly a fun game for any jrpg fan
