I give you points for being a comic fan and showing how much you like the movie even though it differentiates from the comics. Hi Tops Films did a video saying that it was not a good Batman movie, and I can understand his perspective, but I know they had to take some liberties with the movie for pacing, themes, stylization, and for general audiences because some things from the comics wouldn't translate to live action that well back then. I love the movie like I do the Dark Knight film. And also dude I'm amazed that I never noticed how Tim Burton had some scenes end and the next one begin with a similar action (walking on/off screen or going up/down stairs). That's a brilliant visual nod to the what Alan Moore and Brian Bolland did in the comic and now I better understand why Tim Burton said it was the best comic he read. Thanks for pointing it out.

Great video! I remember when this movie came out -- it was everywhere. It was possibly the biggest media push I've seen, maybe only equaled by Star Wars and Shrek. Toys, commercials, product tie-ins, everything you can think of was screaming Batman for about 4 months. Prince even released popular songs about Batman. Batman had his own cereal for a while, for chrissakes. Out of the live action movies I think Batman 1989 or The Dark Knight are my favorites, but the top three Batman movies are probably animated ones.

I’ve always loved Batman 89! It’s clear to me Burton was recreating ‘The Batman’ from 1939 and that original gothic world - the visuals of this film have a ‘timeless’ quality about them - this film’s a work of art!!

Jack Nicholson is by far my favorite interpretation of The Joker. Michael Keaton is also a terrifying Batman. This movie is my favorite movie of all time. It has elements of action, horror, romance, and drama. It all blends together so seamlessly

+Ray Venkman I concour that the TAS Harley was fine and worked well in that continuity and with the TAS jokey Joker even. But I don't think the character belongs in the Batman comic book continuity, but as per usual it was just a big cash-in plan by DC to sell more books.

I was looking forward to this video and now that is here, I'm not disappointed at all! As always your analytic skills are the focal point to me, as well as the storytelling in the video which is improving more and more. But most of all I think that the most important thing remain the same as the other videos: the passion. You have such a great love and respect to this character and that's impressive! Looking forward to the next video!

Wow, this was an unexpected but welcome review. I have very fond memories of this movie and the palpable excitement of going to the cinema in the bat symbol T-shirt with August 11th (the UK release date.) it still holds up as a great movie today, unfortunately TB lost the plot with his follow-up and we had to wait a long time for Christopher Nolan's unparalleled interpretation of the character. It was a nice touch to compare the comic book adaptation directly, I always wondered why there was several discrepancies between the two. Jerry Ordway did an incredible job on the artwork really adding some much needed gravitas to the story-telling. The whole Batmania craze was huge in 1989 and I loved being part of it but the best thing as you said was that it begat some great comic books which flooded the market, the most notable of which was the long running Legends Of The Dark Knight series which I'm sure you'll be reviewing in the not so distant future.

I liked how Batman was better portrayed in the comic book than in the film itself, and it was written by Denny O'Neil. However, the film is still more enjoyable. It's one of my two personal favorite Batman films, the other being Batman Begins, since Batman himself is present.

The only thing I'm unsure of with '89 is that Batman kills (and moreso in Returns). His obsession doesn't seem too far off from how he is in the comics (Silver St. Cloud is the one who broke things off and Bats tried on and off with Catwoman, so settling down with someone never seemed to leave his mind, even if never becoming a priority) and Joker is spot-on, especially with how he was written back then...But Batman was and still is very famous for not killing while Burton's Batman doesn't hesitate if it's more efficient than a non-lethal takedown. Seems in-line with Golden Age Batman (who this channel pointed out isn't SO different from the Dark Knight we love today), but it's always surprising for me seeing this otherwise loyal take on the franchise break a rule that's so near and dear to the titular character (and makes his quest all the more tragic and heroic). Props where they're deserved, though, the visuals and sounds of this movie are perfection! Everybody loves "Gargoyle Gotham" and it's impossible to imagine what Batman (especially the Animated Series) would be like without this this film's soundtrack. The Batmobile and what Returns would turn this film's Batsuit into are also my favorite looks for the items to this day by a MILE! I'll always be sentimental for the blue-and-gray and artists have shown it can be scary, but a creature of the night should be black.

What a coincidence!!! I was just reading "Reading comics" by Douglas Wolk today, in the morning. In the first chapter, he says how "comics adaptations of movies are pointless cash-ins at best-movies that don’t move, with inaccurate drawings of the actors and scenery" and, reading that, I thought of THIS particular comic you're analyzing now (well, I thought about the whole "Batman: The movies" TPB, actually). My conclusion was: at least on this case, Wolk is right. The whole "The movies" TPB is terrible. O'Neil has always been one of my favorites, but there isn't a single example I can remember where he improved any of the movies. The "I suppose the media would call it a batarang" quip, in particular, I always thought was fucking ridiculous. Great video, tho! Still subbed.

How is it possible that Tim Burton's Batman feels like a comic book even though Tim Burton never read a single comic

Because Kevin Smith is full of shit. Executive producer Michael Uslan explained, "In my first three meetings with Tim Burton [in 1985], it was my responsibility to introduce him to Batman [comics] and provide him with the material. I only let Tim see the original year of the Bob Kane/Bill Finger run [1939-1940], up until the time that Robin was introduced [1940]. I only let them see the Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers [1977-1978] and the Neal Adams/Denny O’Neil runs [1970-1973]." www.superherohype.com/features/89305-michael-uslan-man-behind-the-batman-part-1 Over three lunch meetings, Uslan loaned Burton a stack of comic books, including a photocopy of Batman #1 (1940) written by Bill Finger, art by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson, which introduced the Joker and Catwoman; Batman #217 (1969) "One Bullet Too Many" written by Frank Robbins, art by Irv Novick, during which Robin goes to college, and Batman becomes a lone crusader again; and Batman #251 (1973) "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge" written by Denny O'Neil, art by Neal Adams, the Joker's reappearance as a much darker super-villain again. "Just as important as what I gave him was what I kept away from him," Uslan says. "I didn't want him to see the campy and ridiculous stuff." Out of his personal collection, Uslan also shared with Burton his all-time favorite Batman story, from Detective Comics #439 (1974) "Night of the Stalker" written by Steve Englehart, art by Sal Amendola. www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/07/how-the-dark-knight-became-dark-again/259923/ The October 21st 1985 Batman Treatment Outline written by Tim Burton's girlfriend Julie Hickson based on ideas and concepts by Tim Burton, has Rupert Thorne and Silver St. Cloud from the Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers Detective Comics run [1977-1978], and even includes Joker Fish in the Joker's lair, "Against one wall is an enormous fishtank filled with 'Joker Fish,' which we learn are normal fish that have been exposed to his recently refined 'Grimacing Gas' which gives them wildly grimacing mouths..." In Starburst #133 (September 1989) Tim Burton explained, "Warners had the option on Batman for ten years prior to the resurgence of Bruce Wayne's popularity as The Dark Knight in the graphic novel format. The more in vogue The Dark Knight [by Frank Miller] became was helpful because it meant we didn't have to go the Superman route or keep alarming Warners by trying to explain the tone we were aiming for. The success of the graphic novels made our ideas far more acceptable." Tim Burton explained in his book Burton on Burton, "I loved The Killing Joke. It's my favorite." Tim Burton explained about A Death In the Family, "Luckily, when I made the decision to cut him [Robin] out entirely - something that made everybody nervous - that comic book issue was published where fans voted to kill off Robin [Batman #428 (1988)]. The timing was very helpful in convincing Warners that Robin didn't matter."

As much as I like reading Batman comics, do I like Tim Burton's Batman movies(1989-1992)? Sure I do! I just like Adam West's portrayal of Batman a little more. That's how I think Batman might be serious, AND campy all at the same time.

The movie Batman is more coherent. He's more the mute kind of guy, hiding his natural shyness and social maladaptation under the freaky mask and chilling bat-stare. He knows he better doesn't talk too much... (just look at the batcave scene with Vicky, he can't really make his point, she calls him as psychotic as the Joker, so he just ends up knocking her out). However, in a graphic novel, a mute main character is kinda a problem, therefore all these bits of dialogue were added.

We do see Harvey Dent standing with the Gotham police on the third-to-last page of the comic, but without having seen the movie we have no way of knowing that's him.
