Joanna, this is a real milestone. You have very successfully managed a full circle of a livestock breeding season, from birth to sale under less-than-ideal circumstances. You have done this by applying the great lifetime of farming knowledge and innovation you learnt from your dad and now you yourself over this season have enhanced the operation and viability of Dale Farm with your own skills, capability and determination to succeed. Top work. As you said the price was middle of the road due to certain factors but IMHO it's a an outstanding achievement for you getting this far with what you've had to endure. As a (now retired) farmer as well as a father myself I know your dad would be so very very pleased and proud of his wonderful daughter. Excellent work Joanna.

Hiya Joanna & Nick, Well, you got there! Yes, dad is watching down but you only have to prove to your selves now. It will always be John's farm, but it was his dad's farm for him. It is your farm now; you've been through the primary income winner and did well. Now you need to continue doing just that, going forward into your and the farm's future with confidence that, yes you can indeed do this, thank's to dad's training. So, on to the next lamb sale. Does putting your name in for the sale early mean you get sold sooner in the list? You know what to do, you just need to know that you know and do it. Do you think dad never had questions about his own competence when he took over? I can guarantee that he did, and worked through them in just the same way that you both will. Wishing you every success in all you do... Stay safe, Steve xx

Nothing wrong with them prices jo/nick. To get a higher price you would need to have more texel/beltex in your flock but that comes at a price in terms of more labour, more assisted births, vets, and indoor lambing. At the end of the day the net profit will work out the same.

That’s a good point! Thank you for the comment

As things green up again, it might tempt a few more buyers back into the market but the numbers down south struggling with the after effects of the drought are likely to hold prices down. Hopefully you’ll be in the middle of the next sale. Getting the lambs off will help the ewes especially the older ones for next year I suspect will help rather than feeding them later on. Carry on the good work. Every days a school day 👍

Thank you John, yes it’s definitely a different year, with the grass shortages.

you had some nice looking lambs there which you are right to be proud of. what they sell for in the market is largely out of your control. all you can do is take something good in there then hope for the best. so well done

As you say a fair price on the day and I am sure your Dad would have been very proud, not been an easy year for farming.

Congratulations on your first sale - my question going forward is what were the breed crosses that were getting the best money and can you bring some Tups in of that breed - go to a couple more sales to watch and see if that continues
@DaleFarm2 жыл бұрын
I think texel cross does pretty well so I will Stick with that for now I think

Well done Jo. I think you are reasonably happy with the prices. With auctions, it’s all about the buyers and the competition really . Are your lambs going for meat, or to be grown on for other purposes? But after your first full year on your own,you haven’t done bad. Dad would be pleased 😀
@DaleFarm2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lionel and Mary, yes the lambs I imagine will go for the table , so they will be going on to fatten up a bit! I know dad would definitely be pleased with the quality of the lambs and I would say satisfied with the sale price. I think the lambs deserved a bit more but you don’t always get what you deserve x
