I’ve always been a self learner since the beginning. Currently I am a Lyft driver with an associates in liberal arts and going for my bachelors in business management with a concentration in hospitality, but I would like to learn about salesforce, that way I can get remote jobs to feed my family. You could definitely get started on Trailhead with an old iPad as long as it can connect to the internet and you can navigate. However you are going to want at least a cheap laptop like a Chromebook to move through all of the trailhead modules for your first certification. However, if you are on a very tight budget I feel confident that although it may be difficult to complete the trailheads fully, you will definitely still be able to learn and retain the information from the lessons in order to pass your exam.

What is the best way to navigate and learn as far as equipment? Laptop, tablet, or smartphone?

Definitely a laptop, but you don't need anything special just as long as you can connect to the internet and use a web browser. You can do some light studying on tablets and smartphones but if you're going to become a Salesforce professional you're going to need to be able to do some intensive work with mouse and keyboard.

You don't have to but I would definitely recommend it for a solid foundation to your understanding of the platform.

Most people prefer a little additional contacts, especially in the form of practice exams. The two most prominent training groups are focus on force and get force certified. I would recommend either or both, they are both priced under $30.

Sorry for any confusion, my exact wording is "The nice thing about Trailhead is that #1 it's free". I'm certainly not trying to mislead. This video is specifically about Trailhead and having it as a resource throughout your career. Not about the variety of certification exams you can take and their costs. Also keep in mind there are Certification Days Webinars you can attend to get discounts on certification exams and help out with those exam costs.
