The old Salford Preicent 70s had much more character about it. Now it's full of cheap poundshops and no market stalls. Used to remember Zodiacs for toys, Marks and Spencers, Woolworths, Dixons and Tandys to name a few.

I lived on the precinct from 71-85, Edgehill close although did still go on it from time to time till around 88/89. Can’t believe how much it has changed in the years. There was so much more choice of shops plus the market and the food hall and the precinct were so lively and so much nicer. Such a shame how it’s gone to what it’s like now. Had great memories of the precinct.

Salford is a massive red area of Greater Manchester. The city of Salford is wall to wall red, very few City fans live there. My dad's family are Failsworth and New Moston (North Manchester), which North Manchester is massive Man Utd area as well. Mancunians and Salfordians, twin cities, and brother's they are 🙂

Living in nearby Prestwich, I've been there maybe a couple of hundred times over the decades, usually to Wilkinsons, and maybe the Halifax and Argos. Despite many of the comments, I've never felt threatened, or thought twice about going. Sad that the best shops have gone, particularly Wilko, but that's the story everywhere. Very thorough walkthrough and video.

I was born in 1952 and grew up in my early years in Salford. First on Broadway, over from the docks. Then on Marple Street, then Peel Street. There were shops on every corner, and more on Ella Street, Broad Street, Cross Lane with the market on the old racecourse, and Regent Road. The streets were full of life, people meeting and talking, so crime-free that people didn't need to bother to lock their doors. Then came the "developers" and Salford Stalinist Council. And created a cold, inhuman, crime-ridden nightmare. I live a long way from there now. And feel very sad about the destruction of vibrant communities and the fostering of crime.

Used to frequent this place back in the 70s and 80s when I lived in Salford. Had a bit of a bad rep in the late 80s and 90s and was pretty much a no go area. Some observations... Pure Gym used to be Tescos, Subway used to be Lunnpoly Travel Agents, Home Bargains used to be Woolworths, Wilko used to be Marks & Spencers, Mother Hubbards used to be Burger King, Save a Lot used to be John Menzies, Rose Beauty used to be All Sports and where The Fragrance shop is located is a later re-build from back in the early 90s before then it used to house a funky clothes shop called Souls which had curved red and black glass panels.

@Mark Nah the area is pretty rubbish. And depending where around it you live, too many scallies. However, at least Salfordians are down to Earth generally, instead of all that "Manchester is brill" nonsense Mancunians did during the riots.

I used to go there from the time it originally opened. At that time, all of those streets, or whatever you call them were open to the elements. The floor was sort of shiny red brick. I recall Tesco and after that closed, one corner became Longlife car accessory shop - I worked there. I used to cut through there almost every night on my way home. I never once had any problems and always felt safe. One night, a window was put through at Dixons and an expensive camera or something was stolen. The following day, the enterprising store manager got some white window paint and wrote on the glass "Someone just couldn't wait to get hold of one of our bargains..." I'm sure there was a Paperchase or something like that where I used to buy my singles from a cool-looking lad who used to wear sunglasses indoors lol and the Keystone pub where a pint of bitter was 14p. It was all exciting and new and smelled of fresh concrete back then. I see Boots and The Nationwide are still in exactly the same place and wow, the Post Office is still there.

I think it shows a big difference between Salford and Manchester - in Manchester, there are videos of people being threatened and called nonces for "filming kids" when they've filmed outdoors; in Salford, there are loads of kids around as you're filming and nobody is going ape s***. Or did you have a hidden camera?
@my3rdeye8962 жыл бұрын
I agree with that statement but again it all depends on how you go about filming. I'm sure if I stood filming children for longer than I should. There would be something said about it, rightly so. I didn't have a hidden camera. I think you can have people shouting stuff anywhere it depends on that individual and the situation you're filming. Thanks for watching 👍

very lively, a hub for the local community yet and ugly 60s concrete jungle whose time has already passed away. a shame that salford city council does not pull it down and move all the shops to a crescent shaped square with a beautiful simple green as the focal point for the whole area.
