The term "running board" was used back when brake men would use them on trains to get from car to car to apply the hand operated brake and obviously they would have to run to get all of the brakes applied in a timely manner. Those boards were adapted to vehicles so men could jump on the out side and travel with the vehicle. It was made popular by firemen and funny enough old school gangsters in the 20-30s

I’ve owned a few of these over the years. The last one I had was was an 86 model crew cab with 454 & a 4 speed manual . It was actually a factory choo-choo customs truck with a really fancy interior, running boards, fiberglass air dam, visor , tube grill etc.. I own a concrete business & pulled a mini-x & a bobcat on a 30 ft gooseneck float regularly (probably 25,000 lbs) and it got about 10mpg empty and 9mpg pulling a load. Those are some of the best work trucks/tow vehicles ever made. Extremely good find!!!

Those square bodies were the first Chevy & GMC fullsize pickups to have a bigger cab which was a crew cab like that one there & they were first introduced in 1973 which was also the first year for the square body models too. Unlike the crew cabs today that are available on half ton models with a short wheel base, the square body crew cab pickups were only available on three quarter ton & one ton models & all had the long wheel base & the only pickup box that came with them was the 8ft long fleetside one. They were produced from 1973 through 1991 & same with the square body SUVs, but the square body regular cab pickups on the other hand, the half ton & three quarter ton models were discontinued in 1987 & the one ton models were discontinued in 1989. Those square body pickups are the third generation C/K series pickups, & in 1987, the C/K series was dropped & renamed R/V series on the pickups & SUVs to make a distinction between the square bodies & the upcoming fourth generation C/K series pickups "OBSs" for the 1988 model year because both of those body designs were going to be in production at the same time which lasted up through 1991. The one ton regular cab pickups were the only models with both of those body designs produced at the same time which was from 1988 through 1989.

Wanted to say that truck is a Komfort Koach conversion out of Louisville Kentucky if anyone was wondering. Obviously repainted from original Santa Fe Tan to that Brandywine color. The custom sttiping is the signature Komfort Koach design. Indy 500 programs back in mid80s had their ads inside.Great survivor!

If you really want to make it run, throw on a set of the Edelbrock 110cc heads. But angle mill them to 95cc to 100cc, and use the thin Cometic gaskets. The matching Performer RPM intake will work well, and so will a 218°/218°/112° cam, hydraulic is fine, hydraulic roller is better. The problem with the old 454 in those trucks was the 7.7:1 compression, and the extremely small camshaft. It will literally lower both the coolant temp and especially the exhaust temp by raising the compression to 9.5:1 or so. It will NOT ping worse or more. You don't need all the advance. The OE Q-Jet will be fine. You can increase the HP/torque by more than 75%, and the fuel economy by 100%. It's honestly like an entirely new truck, it will run like a newer Vortec big block truck, and get about the same fuel economy.
@keithscudder7136
@keithscudder7136 9 ай бұрын
He needs a stroker kit from Scat motors and turn it into a real healthy 496 V-8 with 10: 1 compression. Maybe a better cam in too. I had to go .030 over with the cylinders and now have a 501 V-8. Still bad mileage, but real strong.

My grandpa had one of those I think 1981 all decked out by some place that did trucks and vans He was so proud of it. Later that year he was diagnosed with Cancer I was only 16 at the time. He willed it to me somehow my Uncle ended up with it. Being young and not knowing what to do I took it as a loss I always wondered what happened to it. My pos uncle sold it right after. I sure miss him I know he would turn over in his grave knowing what they did. This really brings back a lot of memories.

The cams wiping lobes off was an issue on big blocks before oil changed. But after it became a fatal flaw.. I cheaped out on an oil change on my 454, didn't add the zinc additive, and 200 miles later it was done, wiped multiple lobes. I want to put in an aftermarket cam(it was already rv cam) but it seems to me a good cam that won't wipe off is going to be super expensive.

I put the same grill guard on mine that you have. Mine has 4 Hella 220's hanging off of it. It now has 60k on the odometer. I pulled all the smog junk off mine and replaced with headers, Holley carb, self contained hei and an edelbrock rpm airgap intake. I paid $2300 for mine. When I put new tires on , I moved the spare wheel that is perfect with the worst looking (beaut ring scratches) moved to spare.

Yes the old style hydraulic flat tappet cam & lifter hate the new oils without zddp, the newer steel cams & roller lifters along with the epa emission crack downs... pushed oil companies to remover zddp that most just call zink. Too much zink is like too many layers of paint on a house.... it will defeat its ability. I go back with a good roller cam & lifters along with using Driven BR (break-in) oil for the first 30 min & next oil change. After that I run a good quality oil & a bottle of lucas zddp. PS check your pushrods are the correct length with the new cam, summit, Jegs & speedway will know the correct pr required for each style of lifter. I always run ftc oil flush / decarbonizer in the crankcase with a cheap oil then changev to my good oil & new filter. I also run the topend decarbonizer in my fuel. Cleans the rings, pistons & bowels nicely. Its from Australia but have an outlet in Utah, its not cheap but I have prolonged rebuilding a bunch of engines... some are going strong, great products! & I hate snake oils!

Next time you find a moss covered or dirty vehicle from sitting get awesome cleaner from dollar general. Cleans that junk off really well.
