I love that Salma can indulge in her passion projects, and will work hard to make them happen. This is a wonderful story, which includes the kind of magical realism I enjoy in the novels of Isabel Allende as well. I grew up reading stories from all over the world, and even though they often do not have happy endings, I prefer this to the way Disney has sugar-coated so much literature. "You can't always get what you want", is a lesson everyone needs to learn. Nice interview.

This film Is based on the boom wrote by Laura Esquivel. Not by Isabel Allende.

she said that nowadays people are watching foreign-language movies with subtitles, and I’d like to inform her that it hasn’t just started now. For example, we Romanians grew up watching Thalia’s and Natalia Oreiro’s telenovelas, which were massive phenomena in our country, and we always watched them with subtitles, keeping the original audio of the film. This approach opened our minds and helped us learn Spanish, English, Italian, and French from movies. So maybe it’s just recently caught on in other countries, but here in Romania, it’s been this way for a long time. It wasn’t only in films-we listened to music on the radio in Spanish, English, Hindi, French, etc. And we didn’t only watch American movies and telenovelas but also Indian, Chinese, and Japanese films. The point is that we Romanians have a very developed musical and cinematic culture and know many languages because we’ve kept the original language in both film and music. We’re neither racist nor close-minded, and we have a broad knowledge in this respect. So, subtitles aren’t new at all-at least not in Romania. It seems that, actually, other countries are just catching up.
@edwardramirez858925 күн бұрын
That’s amazing! And yes, other countries have always done this but for some reason Americans have never liked watching foreign entertainment with subtitles, I know many people like this, although it is now starting to change. BTW, I LOVE Thalia and it always makes me smile to know she was huge in other countries.

@@edwardramirez8589 I don't know if other countries have done the same with subtitles as we have, but when I was in Spain and Italy, I noticed that they dub foreign films, layering their own voices over the original. This can limit people, as they only hear their own language. But in Romania, we've always had subtitles, which has helped us a lot in learning new things. I’m a fan of Thalía and Natalia Oreiro, and because of this, I now speak Spanish. Thank you for your response!
@zenaidauna25 күн бұрын
@@edwardramirez8589 And another thing to add: here in the UK, some English people don’t like reading subtitles, which limits them as well. They don’t understand a word of Spanish and look at me cross-eyed when I say something in Spanish, French, or any other language. They don’t want to learn and don’t even realize that English is, in some ways, a limiting language. For one, it’s inconsistent since it’s often written one way but pronounced another. Also, most English words end in consonants, which “closes” the mouth, while in Romanian, Spanish, Italian, French, and even Portuguese, words often end with vowels, especially “e.” That “e” sound allows for breathing and even smiling-a quality English lacks. Plus, even though they use “e” as in “hello,” “help,” and “yes,” they inconsistently change it to sound like “i” in some words. This inconsistency is confusing, making it, in my opinion, a limiting language. So, maybe that’s why they find it hard-or just don’t bother-to learn something more expressive and beautiful.

I think she referred specifically to people in the US. Most people outside the US we are very exposed to foreign content. I am Peruvian and I grew up watching Japanese animation, British cartoons, Mexican and Brasilian Telenovelas, European movies, Indian movies, Turkish soap operas and the list can continue... Oh, on cable but also open National TV.

I read Like Water for Chocolate many, many years ago and loved it. it is wonderful to think it will be a series. On another subject, I live in Teopisca Chiapas and rescue dogs here. We have no vet here and so many dogs here get poisoned. I was hoping that I could write Doña Selma to see if she might help us in some way, speaking with officials to persuade them to stop poisoning the dogs, or perhaps a grant for a vet to provide free sterilizations for a time. I tried connecting with Facebook pages for her, but it is difficult to know if they are real or false. If someone reads this and knows how I might write to her or her staff I would be very grateful. Thank you very much.
